Squarepusher is the stage name of Thomas Jenkinson, a musician, performer and composer whose main stylistic specialization is acid jazz, drill & bass, IDM and experimental jungle. He was born in 1975 on January 17 in the UK.
Thomas Jenkins was born in the family of a musician – a jazz percussionist, and thanks to the passion of his father, the boy from early childhood enjoys listening to his performances and gradually begins to write music himself. By 1995, Thomas was playing drums in the university ensemble where he was studying. In addition to jazz, he is fond of dub music, representatives of which are Augustus Pablo, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Art Blakey. Thomas' guide to the world of electronic music is Carl Craig and LFO. Soon Thomas takes the pseudonyms Duke of Harringay, and then Squarepusher, and releases his debut album "Alroy Road Tracks" (Duke of Harringay), in which the theme of the compositions is still closer to jazz than to jungle.
The main difference between Squarepusher and other composers who compose jungle music in combination with jazz compositions is that Thomas does not use samples of other artists, but uses live music, preferring his bass guitar, which he uses even at concerts. In 1995, the musician signed a contract with the company “Rephlex”, which is owned by Aphex Twin, and in 1996 there was a full-length studio album “Feed Me Weird Things”, with the title track “Squarepusher Theme”. It also includes Theme From Ernest Borgnine, Smedley's Melody, and U.F.O.' Over Leytonstone. In 1997, the musician changed the label to Warp, released the next album "Hard Normal Daddy" - almost the entire disc is recorded by the author himself, and its sound forces to rethink many "stuffs" in the style of jazz.
Since 1998’s Music Is Rotted One Note, Jenkinson has moved away from jazz fusion. And the album “Go Plastic”, released in 2001, is much “harder” in sound, it can be described as “rabid dramm & bass, with a mixture of dark ambient and noise”.
Throughout his work, Squarepusher experimented a lot, achieving a perfect sound in combination with various instruments with an admixture of electronic music, and released many quite interesting albums, which attracted the attention of not only fans, but also music critics around the world. /
