At first there were three members: Ken Downie, Ed Handley and Andy Turner. They found each other in the late 80s after a newspaper ad (and Andy joined the band solely because he had his own car) and began making post-tech music. They started as part of Black Dog Productions (BDP). Then Ed and Andy were left to create together. Sharing a predilection for early hip-hop, Handley and Turner separated from Downey in 1995 and since then have focused on their first project (EP), which they released on the neo-electro label Clear before signing with Warp Records. They also recorded a record with Mark Broom.
In 1995, Ed and Andy began to exist as an independent project, releasing the neo-electro/drum’n’bass EP “Android”. The release immediately caught the attention of Björk, who invited Plaid to join as session musicians on tour in support of her album Post. The duo's fruitful and friendly collaboration with Björk continued with a series of remixes of her songs "Army of Me", "All Is Full of Love", etc. Björk performed "Listen to Lilith" on their 1997 album Not for Threes. In addition to Björk, the musicians have collaborated with Orbital, Portishead, Goldfrapp, Funki Porcini and many others.
