Trombone and jazz became central to Glenn’s life as a child. The boy played in the school orchestra, and the day of presentation of the certificate spent playing in the orchestra at dances. After a year with a little training at the University of Colorado, Miller drops out and moves to Los Angeles to play in the then famous orchestra.

In 1942, Miller stopped working with the jazz band and, with the approval of the Ministry of Defense, formed the Air Force Army Orchestra with 45 musicians.
