He graduated with honors from the astronomical department of Matmekh LSU, served as a private in the Soviet Army, in the missile division. After the army he worked in the sector of theoretical astrophysics of the Ioffe Institute of Physics and Technology of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where in 1987 he became a candidate of physical and mathematical sciences. The thesis topic “Statistics and dynamics of rotation of binary galaxies”. In early 1990, he moved to work at the Institute of Space Research (ICI) in Moscow, and since the end of 1990 he has been working under contracts in different countries of the world. He worked for two years at ESO’s Southern Astronomical Observatory (Munich, Germany), then for two years at the Kaptein Astronomical Institute (Groningen, Netherlands). He then moved to the United States, was a postdoc for two years, and then a three-year professor at the University of Kentucky, a year as a visiting professor at the Canadian Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics (Toronto). On November 8, 1995 he founded the website Anecdotes from Russia, which became the first Russian-language website to be updated daily.
