Rick Riordan was born in San Antonio on June 5, 1964. The family has always had a creative atmosphere, as Rick's mother drew and played well, and his father was fond of sculpting statuettes. After high school, Rick decided to become a guitarist and attended North Texas College. But then he transferred to the University of Austin, where he received two higher educations at once - in history and in the field of English. In his school years, the future writer became interested in Greek and Scandinavian mythology. And then, at the age of 13, he tried to write his first story, but did not dare to publish it. During his studies at Riordan College, he spent three years as artistic director at the school summer camp - and it was at this time that he came up with the idea of a half-blood camp.
Riordan's first job was at a school in New Braunfels, Texas, where he was a teacher. Then Rick and his family moved to San Francisco for eight years, and then returned home. He worked as a middle school teacher for another six years and decided to become a writer. Riordan's first novel was published in 1997, entitled "Big Red Tequila". This book opened a detective-mystical series, which was subsequently awarded all the highest literary awards in the United States. He received the Anthony Award, the Chamus Award and the Edgar Poe Award. The protagonist of this famous series is a private detective, martial artist and professor of English medieval literature from San Antonio named Trez Navarre.
In 2005, Rick released the first book in a new series for children, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. The protagonist of these books is a twelve-year-old boy suffering from dyslexia who once realized that he is the son of an ancient Greek god.
Each new edition of the next book from this series (Percy Jackson and the Stolen Chariot, Percy Jackson and the Curse of the Titan) occupied the top lines in the New York Times bestseller lists. In 2010, the book was filmed.
In 2008, Riordan came up with the idea for the 39 Keys series of novels and wrote the first book of the series. Studio Steven Spielberg immediately acquired the rights to the film adaptation of the novel.
Riordan lives in San Antonio, Texas. He has two children, has a dog, two cats and is full of further creative plans.
