(born). April 3, 1948 in Lithuania - doctor, academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, creator of the method of rehabilitation of patients with spinal injuries and former circus artist, People's Artist of Russia (1999).
In 1962, Valentin Dikul fell from a great height while performing a circus stunt. The doctors’ verdict was ruthless: “Compression fracture of the spine in the lumbar region and traumatic brain injury.” Valentin Dikul had to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. For 5 long years, with the help of incredible willpower, he studied day by day. After the injury, in the hospital, then at home. He lifted dumbbells, at first small, then increased the load. Then he began to develop all the muscles of the back that were capable. As a result of all these efforts, he not only managed to get back on his feet (which doctors considered a miracle), but also returned to the arena, where he performed record-breaking stunts. His first number after his injury was an acrobatic motorcyclist stunt. Subsequently, he began to perform extremely complex stunts with throwing weights, was a universal favorite of the public and a famous circus strongman.
He still counsels patients in his centers, encouraging hundreds of thousands of people to take classes in rehabilitation rooms after serious injuries.
One of the main achievements of Dikul was his own method of rehabilitation, protected by copyright certificates and patents. In 1988, the Russian Center for Rehabilitation of Patients with Spinal Injuries and the Consequences of Cerebral Palsy was opened - the Dikul Center. In subsequent years, 3 more centers of V. I. Dikul opened in Moscow alone. Then, under the scientific guidance of Valentin Ivanovich, a number of rehabilitation clinics appeared throughout Russia, in Israel, Germany, Poland, America, etc.
In 1989-1991 - People's Deputy of the USSR, was elected a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
