Arnold Wesker (born 1932) – English writer, known mainly as a playwright, was born in Stepney, a poor area of London’s East End, in the family of Jewish tailor Joseph Wesker. His father was from Russia, his mother from Hungary. To help the family, Wesker had to work in the kitchen from an early age. His father was from Russia, his mother from Hungary. To help the family, Wesker had to work in the kitchen from an early age. The Wesker family was not religious, but Stepney had a strong communal life that gave a sense of Jewish unity in a hostile world.
In 1950-1952, Wesker served in aviation. After the army, he worked as a pastry chef in a restaurant. In 1955-1956 he studied at the London School of Film Engineering, at the same time he began writing plays and short stories. His trilogy of plays, “Chicken Soup with Barley,” “Roots,” and “I’m Talking about Jerusalem,” which tell the story of the Jewish family of Canov, was a great success. Wesker's plays were played on different stages of the world, many of them are filmed.
