Igor Fedorovich Balza was born on February 8, 1904 in Kielce (Poland), spent his childhood in Warsaw. In 1925 he graduated from the Kiev Conservatory in composition class from B.N. Lyatoshinsky, then taught there, since 1936 - professor. From 1942 he worked in Moscow, was appointed editor-in-chief of the State Music Publishing House, until 1949 he taught at the Conservatory, in 1954-1961 he was a senior researcher at the Institute of Art History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and since 1961 he worked at the Institute of Balkan Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Scientific works of I.F. Balza are devoted to the history of musical cultures of Poland and Czechoslovakia, Russian classics. In 1965, he created and until his death remained chairman of the Dant Commission under the Scientific Council for the History of World Culture of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Honorary Doctor of Charles University in Prague and the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw.
