Yet life is worth living. Reading at one time the novel by Guy de Maupassant, on which the film of the same name is based, I was amazed by the sincerity and depth of feelings of the main character, so skillfully described by this famous French writer of the second half of the XIX century. Turning to his film adaptation, I did not expect the same inspired performance, but as it turned out, I was wrong. The girl Jeanne is still very young and inexperienced, she is only 17 years old, the last five of which she spent in a monastery far from worldly life. That is why she strives to see the world that she imagined it to herself from the dungeons of her small room for many years, and she is also ready to love - the love that is pure and sublime, the one that certainly awaits us in novels - a response, full of high ideals and, of course, with a happy ending. However, Jeanne will have to face many disappointments and endure each of them. Once meeting a young viscount - a modest and a little shy young man who had a reputation as the most worthy person in the area, the girl imbued with him sympathy and did not notice how gradually the mutual feeling grew into true love. Only the concept of this high feeling is different.
As sometimes happens when two loving hearts enter into a union in the face of the Supreme, many of the ideals lose their sweet aroma, with the fulfillment of desire, often what we have long sought becomes simply indifferent to us. Sometimes one day changes our whole life, and then we look at many things in a completely different way.
The picture, like the novel itself, fascinated me with its depth of feelings and bright psychological component. I love these things. However, some of the methods of the author, quite characteristic of the work of Guy de Maupassant, seemed to me too frank and... vulgar, or what? It is clear that the author sought to show those contradictions between the world of dreams of the main character Jeanne and the reality of the world around her in the image of her husband Julien de Lamar. The latter is a person far from unambiguous, insidious and, as it turned out, not ideal. However, I will not disclose the plot - who wants to read the novel himself. Personally, the story seemed quite predictable. I liked the film, although after watching it, there is a feeling of deep pessimism and hopelessness of our lives.
By the way, strangely, but for some reason, none of the adaptations of the book (except for this, there is still a film of 1958 release) has not become popular.
“Aunt Lyson, did you suffer in your youth because of unhappy love?”
Yes. I was disappointed.
