Gold bottom During the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg, Captain Mike McComb is forced to burn a million dollars in cash to prevent the money from falling into the hands of the Confederate army. The military tribunal does not consider the actions justified and suspends him from military service. Wounded McComb goes to Silver City, where he plans to engage in gambling, along the way falling in love with the wife of his new business partner.
What can you expect from the director Raoul Walsh - a kind of genre film artist, who had a rarity of a talented storyteller, who shot a number of wonderful films, leaving his unique imprint in the golden era of Hollywood?! Of course, another great movie! The prolific classic presented us with a western with an epic scale “Silver River” – which, with its fast and dynamic current, carries away into the fascinating and interesting story of a man who quickly took the world into his own hands. Underappreciated in its time, this film with all its strength holds the attention from which you get the necessary pleasure. Raul did not do without his signature landscapes of rocky mountains, and also did not avoid the topic of judicial error of the legal system, the shortcomings of which he often portrayed in his films. Another picture of Raoul Walsh in a duet with Errol Flynn, his acting work carries a sincere approach to the role of a brave officer, a clever player, a romantic, a luck catcher, and then an influential and unflappable person who cares about his own interests. But once made an unforgivable offense for the sake of owning one woman, he tries to atone for the guilt by changing his way of life, to overcome unscrupulousness, ambition, and selfishness, to correct himself and go to the noble goals - the concept of morality. Captivating and charming Anne Sheridan in the role of a seductive married lady, noticeably conflicting with the main character, whom she hates and does not want to do anything with him, but in the course of some circumstances, becomes his loving woman and his further support in life. It is impossible not to mention Thomas Mitchell, with an exceptional talent of an extraordinary actor, playing the role of a philosophical and prudent lawyer and friend. The film is a little lacking, that emotional depth of what happened and that responsibility for what happened, that is what its creators completely could not transfer to the screen. Nevertheless, the picture looks with interest, full of beautifully shot scenes, harmonious dialogue, the presence on the screen of a certain romanticism of the missing rhythm, which is endowed with this wonderful film.
