A very good, vital and touching film by Remi Besanson "The First Day of the Rest of Life", 2008. Five novels from the life of the Duval family, consisting of a mother with a father and three children. Each novel is dedicated to a family member at different stages of their lives, and everything is connected into a single narrative, during which their relationship undergoes different changes, and we follow them with human participation and understanding, which sometimes we ourselves lack in relationships with our loved ones. Great actors, good production. Kirill: The film tells the story of a large French family consisting of five people: a father, mother, two sons and a daughter, namely the film tells the story of five decisive and fateful days in the fate of each member of this family. It would seem that a huge number of films have been shot on the topic of family values and relations within the family and it is simply impossible to surprise and interest this topic, but this film refutes this, since the main thing here is in the original approach and presentation of material, namely, the director gradually introduces us to each family member, carefully drawing their portraits for decades in the context of five special days, thereby drawing the image of the whole family. The film turned out to be very soulful and vital, touching and dramatic, stylish and real, full of witty and ironic details, with excellent humor and French charm and looks very easy. Also worth noting is the musical component of the film, consisting mainly of retro songs and rock classics 60-80, conveying the appropriate atmosphere and the cast, perfectly inscribed, where each is in its place, consisting of a fusion of experience and youth: Jacques Gamblin, Marc-Henre Grondin and Deborah François.
For the first 10 to 15 minutes, I wanted to stop watching. But, having still given a chance to the film, continued to watch and did not regret.
A family of five. In the life of each of them there is an event that is important and significant for him... entering this day, passing a certain test, passing through yourself or throwing out certain emotions, on the way out you will not be the same. And each of the characters begins the account of his life from this day, X-Day.
Stories are different... the most ordinary and understandable, everyday, funny and serious. But every story will certainly find an emotional response from the viewer.
The theme “fathers and children”, the theme “shaggy”, with centuries of experience, but far without it. Everything repeats itself in every generation. The head of the family reproaches his father with selfishness, dislike and inattention to himself and obsession with his affairs. Very soon he will hear the same thing with minimal difference in wording in his address from his eldest son. And, of course, a touching scene with a photo ... which he found, not on a wall in a frame, but in his grumpy father's purse ... the scene is fluent, but touching and meaningful.
The acting is not perfect, but there are not many such episodes to bring down their criticism and indignation. In the main part, each of them coped and told the Viewer his story very convincingly.
The film is understandable in everything, it is interesting to watch, draws... I really liked the ending.
While watching, I had a sense of harmony between the idea and the implementation. I have already learned that this is often the case in films where the writer and the director are the same person. A whole canvas is always better than one with a seam, no matter how perfect it is.
The movie is very lamp. It will resonate with many, because a significant part of us, the audience, live their lives about the same quiet happiness, problems and small joys as the characters of this picture. And here is a piece of life of an ordinary, unremarkable French family. But despite the fact that each of those situations that are shown in the film could quite happen in an average family, the set of “pictures” is arranged still in a cinematic way, in order to expect to cause the desired emotions in the viewer. They are reinforced by some graceful episodes - wordless, symbolic and piercing.
The main emotion I personally have when watching is a slight sadness with notes of longing. Emphasize that life is what happens to you right now, not what comes next. You observe the lives of heroes and think about your life, about your goals, aspirations, relationships with relatives. Analyze: where to improve something, where to change the situation, where to change the attitude to the situation. This is the main therapeutic value of this film.
I don't know about you, but I love French cinema. And I'm not talking about the most banal, for example, films with Renault, Depardieu and so on. They're undeniably cultic and cool, but. I like unsightly at first sight French paintings, which hardly on the same search can be seen. This is because they have the most feelings. The paintings are filled with sincerity. It's that feeling when your pupil twitches slightly from the tense, and you stick off the back of the sofa, for the most banal empathy. The film "The First Day of the Rest of Life" in my opinion, a real cinematic orgasm, if such a concept does not exist, then I put forward the copyright to this expression. The film from afar seems so simple and kind, but in fact, everything is different. The director places some of the most necessary and correct accents in his picture. The concept of the film and the entire underlying storyline is twisted on family life and the upbringing of children. And do not hope here to see any instructions for raising children, the main characters do not know what to do and how to do, perhaps for the most obvious reason that they themselves did not understand themselves, so that someone else to understand. And this is normal, this is the most ordinary thing you can find in life. From this follows the logical judgment that family and family life is difficult, and nothing good ends. Perhaps most people do, because people don’t have such things as tolerance and mutual respect. But I'm one of those desperate people who's convinced he's going to have a good ending in his family. As one funny video said, “There will be shoals, but not much.” If you sum up the film, you can agree that the way is thorny, but do not give the back, on the contrary, it may be worth rethinking some things, this is if you watch this wonderful picture at my age. If you are already in the same position as the main characters, then the film will only encourage you to do good things.
A film with such a long philosophical title immediately attracted attention. And for good reason.
The plot does not want to describe at all, because it is better to look and understand the twists of this interesting film. Before our eyes unfolds the fate of the whole family and separately each of its members. After all, for any person, this very day - the first day of the remaining life - comes in different ways: someone later, someone earlier, but still comes.
It makes you think about yourself, not just the characters. You know, you feel some kind of sadness, it is not heavy, like a light fog, but the brain covers up for a certain time.
The film looks very easy, you can get a little confused at first, but then you quickly understand everything. The script is wonderful, the actors are excellent, believe every movement and every word, as if it really is an ordinary French-speaking family, somewhere in Provence.
Separately, you can single out the Canadian Marc-Andre Gronden, for this role he received the Cesar Award, although the acting ensemble is very professional.
For evangelized quiet sadness, the opportunity to think about yourself, faith in the reality of what is happening:

A great movie that only the French could make. A masterpiece! How wonderfully done! A wonderful story, perfectly directed, and masterfully played by actors with funny jokes to great music! It's just a family story. We just watch them, some of the events in their lives. A normal life, a normal family. But it is impossible to break away until the very end.
This movie is not to be missed, just watch it! You will laugh a little, you will be a little sad, but the main thing is that you will have fun and think about your own life.
With a taste of fragrant French wine, an indescribable atmosphere of sensuality and truly European charm, Remy Besanson’s film “The First Day of the Rest of Life” appears before us. Only one thought came to me after watching: “Perfect!”
Yeah, yeah, that's right. Screenplay, characters, visualization and music – everything is perfect, everything is great!
Fabula. The plot is ordinary and uncomplicated. In the center of the story - 5 significant days in the life of one ordinary family. 5 characters. 5 wins and losses. 5 paths of life. Too easy? But do not be deceived: behind the elegant subtle humor and indescribable atmosphere of lightness, a true drama is felt. A simple at first glance, the film will cause a storm of emotions and certainly will not leave anyone indifferent!
A grumpy grandfather, steadily aging parents and their three not the most compliant offspring - all this is very familiar and understandable to each of us. Actors are selected so competently that it is almost impossible to single out someone separately. Bright, charismatic characters will make you smile and worry with them. And that they are a real family, there is no doubt.
The music is beautiful, just like everything else. There are notes of purely French motifs and masterpiece rock of the 70s. Stylish, qualitative, atmospheric.
Visual effect. Very beautiful movie, conquering from the first shots and instantly taking you to France. Emotions, feelings and life itself are all on film. What else can I say? Such films are like a breath of fresh air.
Bravo, Monsieur Besancon, impeccable work!

Having compiled a huge list of “I will watch” on the Kinopoisk, I decided to get acquainted with it in the order in which the films survived. When I opened The First Day of the Rest of My Life, I was pretty sure the film was going to be great, because France, how else?
Before us is a film-the story of one family, from the moment of leaving the eldest son on free bread and up to ... and this is already a spoiler.
The film fits the description of "French". This magical atmosphere cannot be created anywhere else but France. They make films on such simple, mundane topics, which are still unusually interesting and not boring. I am a sincere fan of the “nationality” of the film, and I like to shudder not just to see it, but to feel that the film is French or British, etc. It is amazing when the director’s work gives such a result – and it is not always possible to achieve such an effect.
The first day of his life created this effect. In this director helped a well-written script and unsurpassed acting. Dad, mom, grandpa, sons and daughter. No matter how much screen time is allocated to each of them, all managed to stand out and remember. One can understand a grandfather who cannot show his love for his son because he reminds him of his lost love. You can understand the father of the family, who all his life feels like a failure because of this attitude of his father. He loves his family very much and would like to do the best for them, but what can he do if he simply does not know how and what he needs to change? He does not know what he knows, he does not know. Even better, you can understand a mother who does not want to let her children away from herself - it is difficult for her and she tries to somehow cope with it, but the nerves gradually give up. You can understand sons. Each of them has its own path and it unfolds for who is better, who is worse, but nevertheless it is nice to see them strong and persistent at the end of the story. Perhaps I can not understand only the daughter – as for me, she is simply ungrateful. Although I know that many people can empathize with her. It’s good that it ended as it ended, even though I cried aloud.
In addition to the amazing emotional side of the actors, as a girl, I can not help but note the visual component of the picture. If you like the charming French, this film is a must-see.
There are no complaints about music. Despite the fact that the bulk of the tracks were far from French, they still maintained the correct “boiling temperature”.
The film is captivating and doesn’t let you get distracted by anything else. It's interesting, real, real!!

Despite the fact that almost every weekend, I watch at least one worthwhile film, it was the masterpiece of French cinema that inspired me to write a review.
Starting with the background, I was attracted to the viewing of this movie by its non-trivial title, which immediately included unrestrained interest, which was also supported by the high rating of Kinopoisk.
After watching this unique picture, I am filled with a whole palette of different emotions, about the movie you can talk a lot, but I will sincerely try to keep the balance of loud beautiful words and constructive statements.
“The first day of the rest of life” is not just a movie, it is an impressive story about life, so different and interesting, a life in which everyone has something of his own, from which everyone can take something of his own.
This film tells about the relationship of people of different generations over time within the family and among loved ones, with their values, lifestyles, habits, and, of course, about love. The relationship between men and women is perhaps one of the most (if not the most) amazing and magical events in human life. .
You will witness very different manifestations of human relationships, some of which allow us to experience unrestrained joy, others cause us to plunge into deep depression, let me assume that during the viewing you will be able to observe the story that once happened to you, or quite possibly that you are living in it right now.
About the feeling as a whole - this picture is intriguing, amazes with the variety of scenarios, pleases and allows you to think, in my subjective opinion, it absolutely successfully combines a difficult balance of warm positive mood and mournful tragedy.
Separately, I want to write about music – stunningly invigorating melodic soundtracks with guitar motifs awaken emotions and add sharpness to sensations during watching! They are 100% complete with my playlist.
Time is beyond our control, and this is the motive I read between the lines, and it is important to use every minute, every opportunity, to make the world a better place. As Carnegie once said, “If you want to change people, start with yourself.” After all, for sure, right now you can do something that will undoubtedly please your loved one, loved one and in turn bring great joy to you.
In my opinion, this movie cannot be characterized by one review, but it can be said for sure that “the first day of my remaining life” is not just a movie with a non-trivial name, it is a real source of inspiration and food for thought, which each of us has something very valuable and unique to offer.
Thank you for your attention and your time, and your assessment is always subjective.
The story of an ordinary French family with three children, showing five iconic days snatched from twelve years of their lives.
And all this is familiar to the usual: quarrels, misunderstandings with parents, moving from them to rented housing, the first sexual experience, teenage quirks, wedding, death, cold in relationships, hotly thrown phrases.
It's so ordinary, but it's so lifelike, it's kind of a touching feeling inside when you watch a movie. The truth is that all people are the same and the problems are the same.
5 people, 5 destinies, 5 life philosophies and the understanding that life is here and now, something that can be changed, corrected and felt at the moment, because suddenly today is not the first, but the last day of the remaining life.
In my opinion, there are no shortcomings in the film, just absolutely nothing to complain about.
I watched this movie twice, with a break of about a month. After watching the movie for the first time, I knew I really liked it. But I also realized that once to see this film is not enough.
It's a very French film. With temperament, emotion and entourage. But at the same time, there is a clear understanding that this is a very universal story, and it could have happened anywhere. It’s just the French flavor, I think, reveals it more vividly.
This is a film about the life of one family, the growing up of children, their understanding of life and how it has changed over time. This is a film about relationships in the family, very well showing that it is most difficult to talk about your feelings to relatives, to whom you have long been accustomed and this is sometimes the cause of stupid quarrels and misunderstanding. It's an outside look. Of course, with his position, but the position is almost invisible, allowing you to have your own opinion. This is one of the main attractions of the film.
The story in the film consists of quite separate episodes, each of them has its own background. Anyone who likes the movie will have a favorite episode. In terms of emotions and content, they are almost equivalent, although there are also distinguished parts.
It's a very solid act. I don’t want to single out anyone, everything is very natural. The musical accompaniment also pleased. This is exactly the accompaniment, absolutely unobtrusive, just supportive atmosphere.
It’s a half-tone film, very close to academic, but still very lively. This is a look at life that took place in almost two hours. I highly recommend looking at it, at least to add up your opinion.
Five lives, five stories, five dates.
The film tells the story of one large French family, consisting of five people: a father, mother, two sons and a daughter, namely the movie tells about five decisive and fateful days in the fate of each member of this family.

I recommend watching.
I wonder why such films still do not come out in domestic distribution?
A light, ironic-dramatic film masterpiece! Even watching it in an inappropriate mood – there are emotions: smile, thoughtfulness, experience. And it would seem nothing special, an ordinary life story. Not! You can’t talk about a person’s life “normally.” The history of each person, each family is full of many joyful and unique moments. Many thanks to the French for being able to show it so beautifully and excitingly!
Bravo!
Thoughts about the invention of a time machine do not give people peace. But because humans are a small percentage of physicists, they are looking for ways to travel through time in areas they can understand. What can become a time machine for a person who wants to reclaim the past: plastic surgery, a room filled with things that the long-dead love of his life carefully chose? or perhaps a diary in which he (she) writes only at the most important moments for him (her) when emotions are overwhelmed, but there is no one to tell about these emotions? Music that means more to him than all the symbols in Verlaine and Rimbaud’s poetry combined.
The problem with these improvised time machines is that they force our personal time, our own remnants of life, to continually intersect and connect with the remnants of other people's lives, and that makes it difficult to understand boundaries, it's hard to understand where and when your life is no longer just yours.
The film by Remy Besanson, despite its ease, is similar in ideological orientation to the novels of the modernist of the early last century Marcel Proust. And the point here is not only in the theme of time and its transience, this, of course, would not be enough to resemble the great Marseille. It is important that Besançon, like Proust, shows the connection between the flow of life and the persistence of death. The characters never forget that life is finite: in each of the 5 episodes, someone dies: either a dog, or a grandfather, or a girl Fleur, replaced by a new Fleur. Besanson also developed the idea of associativity and nonlinearity of time. As the hero of “Search for Lost Time” turns out to be in childhood, dipping Madeleine cake in lime tea or watching pink daisies, so the characters of the film move in their lives thanks to the sensations caused by those very “time machines”.
But searching and trying to find time, the film is not exhausted, and the family melodrama remains a family melodrama full of love, traditional psychological problems, whether it is trying to find yourself; going into escapism to face reality as little as possible; and classic problems of fathers and children, betrayals, moral throwing, etc.
What stands out is the story of almost the “last romantic”, Rafa, the hero of Grenoden. Love, generated by a fleeting meeting and settled in it for many years, is shown briefly and against the background of more significant events in the lives of the heroes and seemingly more important spiritual quests. But it is so beautiful on one side, purely aesthetic, and also works on the main idea of the film - the nonlinearity of time. What does it mean 6 (or 7) years when you turn on a record and again find yourself backstage in that club and again (probably for the millionth time) accidentally let out of your hands a leaflet with a phone number.
On the soundtrack and manner of shooting, and probably because of the presence of Deborah François, the film reminded the incredible beauty of the frame of the work of director Alexis Dos Santos. But Santos is more contemplative, not engaged in the search for meaning in the beauty seen, Besanson in pictures puts meaning, and even if sometimes they lose their fleeting elegance because of this, the film in the end only wins. Numerous references to other similar stories (particularly the one with Robert’s pillow air) make The First Day of the Rest of Life another perfect example of imperishable French film-postmodernism.
