The abstract says everything wrong. 'The action takes place in parallel in 1921 and 1974. In the 20s of the last century, the Bolshevist church showed a strong interest in all kinds of occultism, in particular, in the mystical secrets of Tibetan Buddhism. Baron Ungern von Störnberg, who was nicknamed the Black Baron, was particularly distinguished.'
The abstract says everything wrong. It seems that those who wrote this text, the film itself did not even watch, and generally bad friends with logic.
First of all, Buddhism is a world religion, not some Occultism & #39. Secondly, interest in Buddhism was shown not ' the Bolshevik elite' but Baron Ungern von Sternberg, who could not be suspected of sympathies with Bolshevism, since he was a white general and actually fought against this very Bolshevism.
Nevertheless, I see such a sloppy annotation on absolutely all sites without exception, as if one fool wrote, and other fools went to copy his text on all the pages they could.
Now the truth. The film is based on real events. During the Civil War there was indeed Baron Ungern von Störnberg, commander of the Asiatic division of the White Army. He could not get along with the Bolsheviks. He will come out on them, he will be smashed, and he will hide in Mongolia. Gather his strength and fight again. He will be defeated again, and he will return to Mongolia.
And he adopted Buddhism to enlist the support of local monks. And they supported him. Then he defeated the Chinese, who for centuries slaughtered these Buddhists, and became the main one in the Far East. Only the Communists finally killed him. They trapped him and killed his entire army. This is how his fate ended.
In fact, the film could be called historical, if not for the parallel plot about a young graduate student, passing a dissertation, because of which this film can be perceived as two different films. Probably, the author thought that the dry retelling of the story to the modern viewer will look rather boring, so he added elements of a thriller to the film.
After all, we’ve seen a lot of American movies about different animals terrorizing the neighborhood, so why can’t there be a similar Russian movie? I'm here with both hands 'Z'
