A forgotten 90s movie. Part 55 “City Police” or “Metro” (under this title, the film was often released on TV, although there is no subway there in sight) is another film among those that has been forgotten over time. Today, only major projects remain tenacious, however, which are also gradually fading into the past. Of the still in demand - "Armageddon", "Fifth Element", "Rock", "Bad Boys - 1", etc.
But there are really cool paintings – the same “Broken Arrow” or “Negotiator”!
But if we talk about less budgetary, then there are a lot of such films and you can either remember about them or learn from studying the filmography of actors and actresses.
In Metro, which is more familiar and familiar to me, we are talking about police officer Scott Roper (Eddie Murphy), who specializes in negotiating with criminals who took hostages. Crossing the road to one of them, Roper is forced to engage in a dangerous game with the bandit, especially since the life of his girlfriend is at stake. In the hunt for a maniac, Roper is helped by a young partner - a former special forces sniper Kevin McCall (Michael Rapoport), who will have a hard time in his first case.
So, "Metro" as a movie about cops - quite good. The intense and generally dynamic story does not leave the viewer with the feeling that he becomes bored. The film, directed by Thomas Carter, combines elements of an action movie, a psychological thriller and a detective, while due to Eddie Murphy’s colossal experience in the comedy direction, Metro is not without a share of humor.
I think that the invitation to the lead role was dictated by the fact that he managed to establish himself as a comedy cop in the film “Beverly Hills Cop”, because the franchise was generally successful, and the actor himself became a star of the first magnitude.
Taking into account the fact that a year earlier – in 1996 – Bay’s “Rock” was released, we can say that Thomas Carter borrowed the scene in this story with the chase of a tram rushing through the hills of San Francisco. While I can’t say Carter copied the scene, because the films could have been in development at about the same time, the difference was the release date. But the scenes actually overlap. In addition, the opening scene of “Metro” is also similar to the thriller “Fan” with Robert De Niro – and there and here the main characters go in their cars and listen to the radio sports broadcasts (although sports are completely different).
Considering that Murphy is still more of a comedian than a brutal actor, his character turned out so – he likes to show himself, loves to be in the forefront and behaves even in difficult situations as if there is nothing difficult in releasing hostages. Perhaps the participation of the comedian in the project and played a bad joke with Metro, since the film failed at the box office and did not beat its box office. Maybe the viewer Murphy cop tired and if in his place someone else – the result would be completely different.
But even despite this, the film is generally quite good and, unlike many militants of the 90s, where the main character has to fight gangs and mercenaries, here the confrontation unfolds in a one-on-one format, which makes the film acquire a certain distinctive feature.
But look at you. I do not impose my opinion on anyone.
Enjoy your visit.
