As part of the acquaintance with the work of James Mangold, I decided to pay attention to one of his early films - Kate and Leo. I was curious as hell how a director who had already mastered sports drama ('Ford vs Ferrari') and comic book drama ('Logan') didn't hit the dirt with a western ('Train to Yuma') and a thriller ('Identification') and a melodrama. And - the color of the review already gave the intrigue to the head - he coped again.
There's not a single vulgar joke in 'Kate and Leo', there's no physical comedy as a species - and maybe that's why the movie looks a little old-fashioned, because it's almost never made. But this is not the old-fashionedness that smells of mothballs, but the one that forces itself to respect, which immerses the viewer in a seemingly slightly different world.
In many ways, the quality of Kate and Leo is due, of course, to the selection of actors. And in particular, the fact that the project attracted Hugh Jackman. The Australian is stunningly good as a 19th-century American aristocrat. His article, speech, noble appearance can simply be admired - regardless of gender. And he also got a good character: pleasant, lively, interesting.
But, being the main decoration of the film, Hugh in the frame is still not alone. In the lead female role Meg Ryan, whose career had already begun to decline, and "Kate and Leo" became, perhaps, the last pearl in her crown. The actress was successful in the image of a business woman, which combines elegance and some teenage spirit, the energy of youth (although Meg was already under forty by the time of filming). In the background - Liv Schreiber and Breckin Meyer. It is very interesting to see how Liv and Hugh interact in the frame, knowing that eight years later they will meet again in a completely different film and in completely different roles. Beginning: Wolverine'.
Both Schreiber and Meyer are very good in their roles, they are not lost even in those moments when the main character is in the frame with them. And that's very cool, because, in fact, the actors are all that is remarkable film.
Yes, in the rest of “Kate and Leo” – a good, but not an outstanding romantic fairy tale, not carrying especially no surprises. Without reinventing the wheel, the writers simply told us the story of how people separated by eras fell in love. Surely you will remember at least a couple of films with a similar plot, if you dig a little into your memory.
Did Mangold manage to retain the status of a master of all trades? Yeah, definitely. “Kate and Leo” may not be among his best creations, but filmography certainly does not spoil.

A pleasant melodrama based on time travel. This amazing story introduces us to Duke Leopold of the 19th century, who is trying to invent an important unit for humanity. Here is a young Hugh Jackman, who has just shot the role of a clawed mutant, meets a rather suspicious Liv Schreiber - brothers Wolverine and Saber Tooth. From posters and Meg Ryan, you understand that history is waiting for us in the modern world, so the delight and surprise when the tape ascribes the precepts of Dr. Brown and demonstrates a gap in time comes gradually.
It is beautiful, tempting and quite pleasant to see the prince in the modern world. Schreiber’s stunnedness is replaced by Jackman’s awakening to fully present what usually happens when you enter the future – surprise and misunderstanding. But, in reproach to James Mangold, I want to say that Leopold has no reaction to progress and modernization. Yes, the prince is surprised by both the toaster and the TV, but once on the street, there is no effect that you expect.
However, the meaning of the film is not in this, but in getting acquainted with a strict Kate, who is an advertising manager and wants to achieve a promotion. We have an interesting interpretation that so successfully allowed Hugh and Meg Ryan to be in the care of each other. It is the cultural behavior and etiquette of the prince that pleases, which surprisingly has the necessary effect on others. He's so used to being a man of a different era, and people in New York have become much ruder, more deceitful and more self-serving. Also nicely brightens up adventures in the future brother of the main character Charlie. Popular at that time thanks to youth comedies, Brekin Meyer fits in nicely with this trio.
Brekin is an actor who is trying to achieve fame, so the meeting with Leopold causes a stormy and interesting reaction. The world of Meg Ryan looms before us, where in pursuit of a career she must squeeze out all her strength. What does an advertising agent need? Sell the product so that the consumer wants it. The director in all this story presents an actor’s transformation, the skill to change the appearance and convince: a commercial, an actor’s brother, and the most impressionable and credible is Leopold – a real person who does not pretend, but behaves as befits a man of his era.
Naturally, the film seasons the whole affair with melodrama, beautifully showing that no matter how strict and self-sufficient a woman is, when there is a gallant gentleman nearby, no one can resist the desire to feel like a weak girl. This is how this interesting story is built. It is pleasant to see Leopold’s knowledge in different fields, when he amazes modern boasters with the details of a particular estate, French language and opera.
James Mangold is very interested in his work. Surprised by the film adaptations of comics (about Wolverine, of course), a complex drama about a mental hospital (“Interrupted Life”), admires biopics (“Ford vs. Ferrari”, “Breaking the Line”) and for some reason shoots the fifth part about Indiana Jones. “Kate and Leo” gives great emotions and enthusiasm for the rules of communication of different eras, but also gives the very thing that in general are beautiful pictures about time travel. Turns out it was a glorious journey. Or is it just coming?
A beautiful climax that should have happened sooner, but we see the transformation and change of the characters. Kat and Leo have changed each other’s lives so they will never be the same again. Yes, some of the plot details are very attracted, but they give a beautiful ending.
“Kate and Leo” is a romantic comedy. The film is very cute, romantic, empathetic to the main characters. The plot is based on a fantastic canvas that the Duke of Albany Leopold came from the XIX century to modern New York, where he met with an independent careerist Kate. Although the abstract sounds very unpretentious, but nevertheless "Kate and Leo" is the perfect film when you want to see something romantic, something about love, which only happens in the movies.
So warm to this picture is largely due to the more than successful embodiment of key characters performed by Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman. Kate is a beautiful, independent, intelligent, charming, independent girl who over time convinced herself that there is no love, everything is just a successful marketing move. Leo, probably, is what is called the “ideal man”: handsome, intelligent, gallant, well educated, caring, he has excellent manners, next to such a gentleman, you inevitably want to become a lady.
“Kate and Leo” is a film about love. I will not argue that it is predictable in plot twists and does not carry any meaning in itself. That’s just sometimes even adults want to briefly, but plunge into a beautiful tale of love.
In the life of a successful careerist Kate appears Duke from the century before last Leopold. Do you know what usually happens?
Very atmospheric image of New York of the XIX century, where a lot of aesthetics and pathos. To me, Hugh Jackman fits in perfectly. But in modern New York, he looks like Ivan Vasilyevich. By the way, watching the movie from this angle is much more fun. And that's fun for us, because it's a little long in my opinion. Many unnecessary scenes and boring dialogues about honor and love.
I personally fell into the soul of the main character - a woman who is married to work (well, she wouldn't fall for me?) It was a surprise to see such a character in the 2001 film. Did the ending put everything in its place?
Overall, the movie is not bad. It is clear that at the moment in the context of a billion like it is unlikely to surprise, but its charm here is definitely. It's like a good old-fashioned fairy tale that's perfect as a movie for the evening. I think if I saw this film ten years earlier, I would be delighted and would recommend it to everyone.

The idea of the film is interesting first of all with the theme 'falling' when the character enters an unfamiliar world for him, in this case, in another era. But this is more of a romantic comedy than a story, which is not bad in itself, but the film looks blurry.
From the first shots, the viewer understands that feelings will flare up between Kate and Leo, and as soon as you begin to follow their story, a lot of pointless nonsense begins: with Stewart’s dog, with Stewart himself, elevators, with Kate’s boss, advertising farm oil, clumsy falls and slipping Kate from scratch.
And like some moments are not superfluous, for example, the elevator turns out to be Leo's invention, but this is ' the gun' does not shoot at all, but only stretches the plot.
From this and the relationship of the characters are crumpled, there is no chemistry, although there are prerequisites for this - the actors' play is not bad, because of which the film is interesting to watch and want to know the finale.
The final, by the way, comes quickly, but I confess, I wanted it to be given more time than the fuss at the beginning.
I will say that I lacked the development of romantic relationships between the main characters.
A Prince from the Past in Modern New York or Unexpected Love Through Times
A romantic comedy. Oh, something missed my soul for romance, so I am now watching cool romantic comedies, and today in line just a wonderful picture called 'Kate and Leo'. Remember that I watched it in the thirteenth year after 'Chocolate', and in spite - the next day we came to the store delivery, which in addition to all was a DVD with this picture. I didn’t buy it then and now I regret it. Then came the reissue in blu-ray format from the company ' Carmen video' with an improved picture and additional materials - again did not buy. Now, after seven years, it is almost impossible to find a disc with this picture on sale, except to look for people who sell these discs on flea markets and forums. I should have taken it. And why I was greedy, because they were worth a penny. Now the more common option is to buy in a digital service, which I fundamentally do not intend to do. The introduction this time was quite long. Technically, I just saw the picture a second time, and it was able to give me emotions again, and here is my brief opinion - an unexpected love through time. Like any person, I judge the picture from my bell tower, and my opinion may not coincide with yours, so I will not analyze the shortcomings (there is one comment, but about this below). Let’s focus on the obvious.
So here they are:
1. The main characters - the whole picture is built on the relationship between the English aristocrat of the nineteenth century Leopold and the modern American business lady Kate McKay. Here's a surprise, who would have thought. What else could you expect from a romantic comedy? The viewer through the screen feels the real range of feelings that the characters experience. Hugh Jackman and Meg Ryan were very convincing. I didn't feel fake, fake. The actors really did their best!
2. The creators of the two worlds were able to show the life and mores of nineteenth and twenty-first century New York, with their achievements and difficulties, which are in stark contrast to each other. To be honest, I like the nineteenth century. I especially liked Leo’s attempts to understand modernity. Because on the one hand you laugh at him, and on the other you try to stand in his place and ask yourself only one question '. '.
3. Comedy is all about Leo’s attempts to understand the modern age and Kate’s awkwardness. It would seem a little, but described and played it just fantastic! You fall in love in those moments. I was particularly pleased with the dialogue in those moments. You laugh with the characters, you worry about them.
4. Unexpected love - and although the romantic line shown here is not a masterpiece (in my opinion), not giving it credit would be a crime on my part. The very fact of a union between two such different personalities, in fact from different worlds, seems impossible. In fact, it is a fairy tale, a tale about a lost prince who finds his princess in the future. The ending is predictable, but the laws of the genre are. Again, there is a spark between the heroes.
5. Intelligent thoughts - first of all, the norms of decency, morality, which in our century have almost erased, and it is a pity, because they could make many happy. Galantry, etiquette, manners, courtship of a girl - all this should not be forgotten. Men! Honestly, try it, it will take a little time. I used something, but I also wanted to go into it. The concept of honor and dignity is not forgotten.
Here's the remark. In the film, Hugh duplicated Valery Storozhik (a good voice), but I am used to the constant ' Russian' voice of Hugh Alexander Rakhlenko, and I would like him to duplicate Hugh in the Russian version.
A bit about the main characters:
1. Leopold is Duke of Albany and other titles. An English duke who came to America in search of a rich wife, but accidentally finds himself in modern New York, where he falls in love with the modern business lady Kate. A person of good upbringing with good manners, well-read, intellectual, who faces modernity with its mores and customs. Lovely acting by Hugh. His character was very convincing. It is worth taking an example!
2. Kate McKay played by Meg Ryan is a business lady, immersed in work so much that she does not notice many things and almost missed her chance at happiness. The heroine Meg with absolutely modern views, when on the way to the goal you can neglect a lot and weaned from simple female happiness. Meg is amazing here, especially her hair.
3. Stewart, played by Lev Schreiber, is Meg’s ex-boyfriend and a mad inventor who was able to accidentally pull Leopold out of his past, which led to interesting consequences. I saw Leo in many paintings, and in all he was absolutely different, and this role he has - one of the best!
It is a pity that such a good picture did not quite perform well at the box office, almost failing, and at home it is a complete failure.
And although I do not feel nostalgic feelings for this picture, and do not consider it a masterpiece, like ' Chocolate' or 'Intuition', but I will give it a well-deserved high score.

I think I am ready to confess my love for foreign romantic films of the 90s-2000s endlessly. It is to this period that we owe the kindest, brightest and most touching films about love. "Kate and Leo" is no exception.
The film tells the story of a young London scientist who managed to find the entrance to the portal between the worlds of the past and the future. It's an old topic, you say. But wait to draw conclusions. Flying through the portal, Stewart finds himself in the past - at a time when the British still moved on carriages, balls were held in famous families, and wives and husbands for their children were picked up by parents. Stewart finds himself in the house of Duke Leopold of Albany, the future inventor of the elevator, and tries to shoot with a tiny camera sketches of his future invention, as well as the life in which he lives.
However, he does not manage to get lost in the crowd, and the Duke himself takes him by surprise. In the process of pursuing an unknown visitor, Leopold passes through the portal with Stewart and finds himself in the future, several centuries later. Stuart has to temporarily settle him in his home and figure out how to protect the future inventor from the dangers of the modern world until the portal opens again. This will only happen in a week.
Watching the Duke master the wonders of technology and communicate with modern people is of course a great pleasure. However, the most interesting thing begins later - his ex-girlfriend Kate enters Stewart's apartment, so different from the women of past centuries that she makes a rather ambiguous impression on Leo. Since Kate lives right below Stewart, their relationship with the Duke becomes regular, and opens Kate’s eyes to what a real man should be and what place he should occupy in a woman’s life. Not feminists, but a normal woman, the one that nature made her.
In fact, it's so satisfying, in the face of the feminist revolution that's going on and women are becoming men and men are becoming women, to see the kind of relationship that our women need. Leo is incredibly gallant, intelligent, interesting in communication, charming, brave and resourceful, and at the same time does not even think about dragging a girl to bed. It’s a different level, and it’s so beautiful that you forgive the film some inconsistencies and plot stupidities. You just look and enjoy yourself.
I recommend the film to everyone who has not lost faith in love, sublime relationships and real men.

After watching this film again, I am convinced that love is timeless, just like Kate and Leo.
To be honest, I don’t really like and appreciate melodramas, but good films always appeal to me, regardless of genre. This is "Kate and Leo", which tells us about a man from the past who accidentally came to America in the late nineties. He has to spend a week there and then he can go home. He meets love, but what if he has to make a great discovery that directly affects the fate of mankind? He can't stay in the future.
This film tells us about a love story that shouldn’t have happened. And surprisingly, it touches the soul. The fault, of course, is good actors and interesting characters. They have well-written characters and act within their framework, which is a clear plus. You won't see stupid decisions. The only thing that bothered me was how quickly Leopold came to terms with the future. Of course, throughout the film he does some pretty strange things, but still feels good at this time.
Of course, this is not Hugh Jackman’s best role, but in this film he managed to become the perfect man, who is still drooling many women. Meg Ryan, exclusively in my opinion, became one of the first personifications of a strong woman in modern cinema, for which she also deserves special praise.
In general, the film looks very easy and is perfect for both a family evening and a romantic one. It doesn’t put any pressure on your brain, and if you step away from the screen for a moment, you won’t lose anything, but it’s still a good and interesting movie. It is well worth the time spent.
Meg Ryan — Kate McKay — purposeful businesswoman of the XXI century. Successful in her career and lonely in love. A strong woman who has taken on her fragile shoulders all male responsibilities, including her brother Charlie. And only next to a man like Leopold, she thaws, gradually turning into a delicate, fragile woman.
It is also worth noting the participation of Liva Schreiber (Stewart) and Breckin Meyer (Charlie), who pleased with their wonderful acting no worse than Jackman and Ryan.
As a result, “Kate and Leo” is one of the best films of its genre, which will bring a lot of emotions to all connoisseurs of good light cinema. If you feel bad or want something bright and soulful, watch this amazing movie.
Hello, people of planet Earth, especially New Yorkers. Do you love Meg Ryan as much as I do? And Hugh Jackman is very good. Separately, only separately, but as a couple, and even so different I do not imagine them. The creators of temporal melodrama believe otherwise that they are very compatible, even through the centuries. And after 15 years (the film was shot in 2001), such a story, if you look from the sidelines, does not seem so romantic and at least at all plausible, a New York fairy tale, not otherwise. Although in those days, she impressed with the novelty and originality of the idea.
So what do I mean? Director James Mangold is known for such a masterpiece as “Life Interrupted”. And maybe in terms of directing, the film itself is good, but in terms of everything else, it is quite pumped up. We will walk around the modern city, feel its dynamics, see the Brooklyn Bridge and the old mansion of the inventor Leo, the Duke of Albany. You can even feel the atmosphere of the last century, at least 1876. Then the engineer John Röbling provided the project of his bridge. Stuart Besser (Lev Schreiber) loved this bridge. His idea seems crazy for an ex-girlfriend Kate McKay, who is used to creating other illusions and generally reaching career heights. But he seemed the most organic and sincere character. Who naturally fit into the picture and became an involuntary guide, even after a hundred years. So be it. Unlike the Duke of Albany, Hugh himself, who can be seen to have tried his best in teaching secular manners, may like the lady with his prudence and courtesy, but Kate herself simply does not fully understand what is happening, what she is striving for. And this clearly contradicts us as an understanding of true careerists. If a man needs his achievements, then a woman is ready to throw herself into a boiling pot, an analogy with a Russian fairy tale is recalled, as long as true love is near. Of course, it is right to make a choice between love and career, but does it happen in real life?
Uncomplicated plot, bribing with its simplicity and obvious end, somewhere touches, somewhere captures, somewhere brings boredom. You get tired of the endless explanations, the fragmentation of the characters, and in the end you forget where our mad scientist went. Whether the essence of the film is that Leopold teaches good manners to Kate's brother - Charlie (Breakin Mayr). Or the artificial world of advertising, which we better told "99 francs" than this melodrama. Is it that marriage of convenience is not the main thing, but what is the main thing in a person’s life? A true and true love that will overcome all obstacles. As Stanislavsky said, I don’t believe it! Kate's gray dress at the end of the film is even more disappointing than the rich nuts on the issue. All this running of the characters is more like a scene with a simple phrase: and I'm here for a minute to stand. I kind of happened to pass by. So, alas, to the end and do not believe that the main characters in each other really fell in love. Sorry. Could have been such a masterpiece. And so, another commercial work, where you can chew popcorn for a couple of hours, see the credits and forget.
The only thing is that in such films there are competently selected soundtracks. That's what those who "issued" the Golden Globe for the soundtrack Stinga - Until. Hugh Jackman was also nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Actor. Why? After all, he really got used to the role of a real gentleman, took riding lessons, dance and really tried to look “natural” in every possible way, like the oil he advertised.
Quite a lot of movies watched and revised several times in childhood, leaving “bright” memories, are also easy and interesting to watch already in adulthood. Despite the simple, sometimes even naive plot and frequent "distortion" of old memories.
However, the plot of “Kate and Leo” is quite good, how naive and simple it would not seem at first glance. After all, to create an interesting melodrama, you just need to have a fascinating romantic story and good actors who will be interesting to participate in this project and will also be “honest” in the performance of their roles, which is very important. And if you do not take seriously "travel" in time (in fact, they do not need to be taken seriously anywhere) and some "fairy tale" of what is happening, then the output turns out to be another beautiful and beautiful film about love.
Leo - gallant, honest, courageous - a true gentleman of the XIX century. Who wants to find the only one with whom he would spend the rest of his life. Kate is a business woman with her problems and cockroaches in her head. She doesn’t care about anything other than her career. And at first she treats Leo with distrust, but later distrust will be replaced by sympathy, which eventually develops into something more. It is interesting to see the contrast between the old and new times in their relationship. Quite “logical” and measured narrative, but the “love” dialogues are somewhat protracted. And those 2 hours that the film is going on, it could well be reduced by 20-30 minutes. This makes it a little more interesting.
The actors are good. Hugh Jackman here is still very young and even more charming, coped with the role with a hurrah, however, as always. And also showed that in addition to “Wolverine” is capable of other roles, which over time will prove again. Meg Ryan was the first time I saw her on screen, but she looked great with Hugh. Let with a small role, but still to the place and Liv Schreiber, with whom Hugh will also “meet” in 8 years, in the film – “X-Men”. Start. Wolverine. And with the director of the film – James Mangold, they will once again collaborate in films about the “cogty predator”.
In general, fans of Hugh and Meg, to watch it is necessary.
What girl does not dream of meeting a real gentleman on the disgraced streets of vulgar reality? A noble, well-bred, intelligent duke, tending to his lady as befits a true nobleman. No matter how fantastic this thought may seem, it will always be in fashion. Ladies of all stripes will appease the next romantic love story “Romeo and Juliet”, separated by a whole era.
She. So, the modern girl Kate is deeply mired in the quagmire of failed attempts to build a personal life and at the same time climb the career ladder where her feminist pride will finally remain satisfied, but at the same time cherishes the thought of a “strong shoulder” and relishes dreams of overgrown romance. Every citizen of a big city recognizes himself in it. Meg Ryan perfectly embodied the image of such a lost woman, entangled in her own life and tired of her to death. At the same time, due to its contradiction, it is comic to the point of humor. Her life is upside down and all she has to do is balance on the shaky bridge of her ambitions. What choice should modern She make, torn on the one hand by the need for love and family idyll, on the other - in independence and professional self-sufficiency?
He. Leopold is a complete antipode and, at the same time, an addition to Kate. He is balanced, inventive, judicious, polite and, of course, fictional. The son of his era and the collective feminine ideal, Leo appeared in the 21st century to reflect their contemporaries’ shortcomings and remind them of the eternal, the main thing. Hugh Jackman fit into his role so well that I think his well-trained British accent, mannerisms and tricks have won a large part of the audience. He rides, plays and sings, fencing, speaking French and waltzing with ease. Among other things, the young Duke is highly moral and incredibly intelligent. Faced in a world so different from our own, what choice will he make? Do you want to stay and enjoy the technological progress that was once neglected, or return to your dreary responsibilities? Marry for convenience, as shown to aristocrats, or follow your heart, as taught by a fantastic journey?
Love. The picture is shown ridiculously ridiculously and romantically. Some moments I want to leave in memory forever, to get on inclement days, admire and hope. Despite the comic and incredible nature of the story, it teaches us to believe, forgive and appreciate.
Very funny and good movie, it deserves a lot.

A person from the past falls into our time and unintentionally, but drastically changes the lives of almost everyone who encounters him.
Nice, romantic semi-comedy, semi-melodrama. Nothing particularly new, especially cute or especially funny, but nevertheless, the film can be watched even without much tension. Hugh Jackman is beautiful in this role, a true English gentleman. It was really nice watching him. His duet with Meg Ryan was quite harmonious and pleasing to the eye. Liv Schreiber and Brekin Meyer played not so significant roles, but nevertheless their characters well diluted the semi-dramatic setting.
The film is very smooth, very smooth, with humorous inserts and a cute dog. About love outside of time, about a gentlemanship that will never go out of fashion, about aspirations, ambitions and much else that has never been explained.

I did not dare to watch this film for a long time because I am skeptical of romantic comedies. But after looking at such rave reviews, I decided to make an exception because of my beloved Hugh Jackman. As it turned out, in vain.
At first, the film was poorly tolerated, but then ... poured such pink vanilla that all scales of shoulder-fluffiness should just go off scale.
Let's start with Leo, more specifically Leopold. If we take the fact that he is a noble aristocrat from the past, then very much in his behavior somehow does not fit. Knowing the etiquette, manners, culture of speech, opera, etc., he chooses a couple of Kate from the future.
And now imagine how such a woman, who does not possess any of the qualities by the standards of the time and the demands of such men, should have liked him personally? It's so naive and unnatural that it looks like a grotesque. Neither manners, nor beauty, nor the ability to dress, the complete absence of at least any inclinations of femininity, from time to time includes hysteria, and at the same time smokes and overcooks with alcohol.
All right, let's omit the fact of her identity, just look at her relationship to Leo. And what we see is the complete absence of at least some attempts to win him over to himself. From her side, there is not even any help to at least help a person to settle down in a new world for himself. She uses him in advertising for her own benefit at work, while frantically responding to his remark that it is at odds with his personal value system. He'd rather fall in love with her brother if the writer wanted him to. As I understand it, the actors just performed any nonsense that was written in the script.
Also, it is not quite clear how these time jumps occur, it is just a kind of fictitious plot to justify a sharp change of eras. He didn't think about it, just complete nonsense. To take a moment with pictures and a journey, for example, is a paradox. If Leo doesn’t run after the photographic Stewart, he will never meet Kate in the future, which in turn will lead to the fact that she will not be able to go back in time without meeting him in the future.
Alternatively, we were supposed to show that Kate sees Leo running away, then sees him come back as Leo 2.0 (if you like) and then there is a scene with recognition and dancing, or so ... stupidity. In total, for the beautiful Hugh, for his play, classic costumes and a couple of funny scenes:

P.S. Fairy tales of course, but do not forget about naturalism.
In the genre of light romantic cinema, there are both completely entertaining and stupid tapes, and those that catch a special heart and settle in memory - you do not think about them too seriously, but you remember necessarily with warmth. And the feeling of wasted time watching, they definitely will not cause. "Kate and Leo" is one of them. Conveniently sit on the couch, press "Play" - a pleasant evening is provided. And at the same time there will remain a pleasant feeling of contemplation of some no one, but art.
Responsible for this feeling is the performance of Hugh Jackman, who made the whole film. The brilliant performance of the role sitting on the actor as if infused, as if specially written for him - is this not called the magic of cinema? The handsome Prince Leopold, an aristocrat to the tips of his nails, impeccably decent and refined, is one of those images that absolutely everyone likes and goes into folklore. I don’t even talk about the female half of humanity – this is their prince on a white horse (when in one episode it is said that 96% of the female audience like Leopold, I was even surprised – what do the other 4% think?). But the male half is not a sin to familiarize themselves - at least as an example to follow.
Definitely succeeded in the images of the second plan - crazy genius Stewart and simple-minded good-natured Charlie. Lively, non-banal, self-ironic. But women's images, including Kate herself, in my opinion, are weak. Don't catch on.
Plot? Uncomplicated, with common techniques, with strains (for example, Kate goes into the past after Stewart left him, but somehow finds herself in his photo). The fantasy canvas is exactly what the canvas is. The problem of the relationship between the past and the present, the clash of worlds, no one needs here. Leopold easily adapts to modern New York. The emphasis on another: on the miracle invading the life of a dry, tormented by business haste. How this man, having overcome the first distrust, blossoms and opens up, as if a flower, removed from the heat into a grace-filled shadow, is very curious to observe. And now he throws away the crutches of stereotypes and decides to fight for his happiness, not to miss the chance. The film inspires the thought: inside each of us lives a dreamer, yearning for the ideal - a slender life hid him deep, deep, but did not kill him.
And the story is crowned by a beautiful song from another aristocrat - Sting.

This film is what it should be. There will be everything: the salvation of a beautiful lady, and attempts to win her heart, and chases, and fights, and humor, and friendship. What else is needed, that at home watching such a film, the girl's heart trembled, and out of the chest broke the cry of tenderness? Of course, the handsome Hugh Jackman in the lead role! And do not care about all the misunderstandings in the film, do not care about the violation of all the laws of physics, chemistry, psychology and logic, because the main thing is a well-spent time.
Do you want Philoso's arguments about the space-time continuum and the time loop? Forget it. The main thing in the film is to “hurt the modern generation, to show that even if we work, spin in the mad rhythm of the megapolis, we still dream of that perfect world where good and justice triumph, where the villain will be unavoidable, and the boaster humiliated. All women, albeit secretly, but dream of finding their prince, and every man wants a woman who will believe in him and follow him to the end of the world!
I liked the movie. He is sweet, kind, with humor and irony, with the hope of a bright future framed by a beautiful story.
I was going to watch this melodrama for a long time and finally watched it. I didn’t think I would like this movie so much. “Kate and Leo” is a kind and sweet comedy melodrama of 2001, which turned out to be a gentle and funny film that leaves behind only positive emotions.
We see now a noble prince from the past. Here he met a pretty modern woman, and we see their romantic relationship and a beautiful love story.
The film is witty and wonderful. The story is not trivial, and I liked it. I especially liked and remember Happy End. The cast was pleasant. Hugh Jackman is a talented actor and a charming man, and he is always perfect for such roles, and in this film he played great, and I liked him the most. Meg Ryan is a strong and sensual actress who always plays both dramatic and comedic roles, and we can see this once again, because she played wonderfully in this melodrama. The duet of these actors was beautiful, and together they are pleasing to the eye. The film is positive, and it is made to maintain a great mood and smiles. I would definitely recommend this movie and review it myself.
Watch "Kate and Leo" and this comedic atmospheric melodrama will take you into an unexpected and beautiful love story with a drop of fiction and something kind and soulful.
Probably, almost every girl in childhood read fairy tales where the princess is saved by the handsome prince, falls in love with her, and they live happily ever after. In a sense, the film “Kate and Leo” is a version of a fairy tale for those who have long parted with childhood.
First of all, I want to note the excellent selection of actors. Leo (Hugh Jackman) and Kate (Meg Ryan) have created a stunning image of the couple, perhaps truly perfect. They are great together and individually.
Hugh perfectly got used to the role of prince, with impeccable manners and genuine respect for a woman. He has a true morality and his courtesy comes from the heart. Is there anyone in the world who would not dream of such a satellite?
Kate is also not inferior in quality. She is strong in spirit and knows how to manage her life. Probably not just fell on her head Leo — not everyone could take the situation into their own hands.
On the one hand, it's a classic story of "saving a princess" this time out of the rocky jungle of a stuffy city. But Kate helped Leo, was able to guide him and help navigate the new world for him. Isn’t that the point of the film – true love is born only when two people interact?
Whatever conclusion we come to, this film will remain in memory for a long time. This atmosphere of true love, so incredible, but at the same time so real that you begin to expect that someone completely extraordinary will appear in your life and give you a dream.
You can endlessly paint all the charms of this film. He deserves to be seen. One, then another, and so on forever.
Plot: Due to a series of events, Leo, Duke of Albania from the 19th century, finds himself in modern New York. There he meets a girl named Kate McKay.
In 2001, James Mangold presented to the public a very interesting romantic comedy “Kate and Leo”. This film is about an aristocrat who, because of one scientist, ends up in modern New York. Since Leo is not from the very Middle Ages, he quickly settles into the modern world and begins to win Kate’s heart. Hugh Jackman is very well transformed into a gentleman and I, hand on heart, prefer this image, despite all my love for Wolverine. Meg Rayne plays in the film as she has played in other romantic comedies with her. But in this film, it does not cause negative emotions. There's a lot of humor in the movie, but it's more of a gentleman's thing here, or it's all about Jackman's concept of the future. Like a melodrama, the film is beautiful. Love the main characters believe in their actions, too. Of the downsides, I would note that there are a bit of boring moments in the movie with Meg Rhine in the office. Sting's song "Until..." and Judy Bell's "Back Where I Belong"
Verdict: a very good romantic comedy with a great performance by Hugh Jackman and a good performance by Meg Ryan.
9 out of 10
'Sunday is the day before Monday, so it's poisoned.' (truth of life).
This movie was once made by my mother to watch. At first, she refused in every possible way, then she found out that Hugh was acting in it (she just adores it) and then it started...
I admit, I really liked the movie. Although I didn’t expect it to happen... I don’t like romantic comedies, and I only watch them when there’s nothing to watch.
The Duke of Albany from the past, from the 19th century, enters the future, into a modern metropolis, and, under incredibly well-established circumstances, meets Kate McKay - a successful young woman. . .
Here's the truth about how beautiful men used to live. Decent, gallant, caring... these are hard to find... By the way, Hugh Jackman (Leo) just got used to the role. He's one of my favorite actors now. He was amazing and I wouldn’t replace him. So charming, sweet, just lovely! This is what a real gentleman should be like!
I also liked Meg Ryan, and she’s the right person to be a businesswoman. He and Leo look really nice.
It is also worth noting the participation of Liva Schreiber (Stuart). He subsequently starred with Hugh in 'Wolverine'. I liked his performance.
And then again, I'm stuck with this phrase:
'- Well, make fun of it. But one day, awakening from a sweet slumber, you will feel the aroma of warm toast with marmalade and fresh butter, and you will understand that life consists not only of the needs of the body, but also of taste.
- Say it again!'
After watching 'Kate and Leo' I have many fond memories. Such ' relaxing', a humorous film, just in time for ' rest of the brain'. It’s a pleasure to see well-chosen actors, the whole movie can be seen in one breath. There is no drag, no dullness, no distaste for the plot or the actors, everything is filmed perfectly! I want to go back to the time when Leopold lived. Then life was just gorgeous, not like now... fashion for clothes was just like I love, and what decent people were, it’s just wonderful!
In general, I am completely satisfied with the film! More of them. Thanks for making me watch it, it’s one of my favorites!
Check it out, you won’t regret it!
With full confidence I can give him the highest rating:
The movie was shot more than ten years ago, and I watched it only now, because the sensation after watching is even and somewhat cool. He didn't seem surprised. Genre is a romantic comedy, and that’s it. The plot is also common - a savage (in this case a knight and a gentleman) was in the modern calculating and indifferent world. But this world, as usual, is subject to the alien, because deep down, every resident of the metropolis is waiting for his happiness and believes in his own fairy tale.
Meg Ryan is very nervous at the beginning, performing strange dances on the sidewalk and weighing up snide remarks. By the middle of the film, it acquires a feminine look and becomes more calm, which greatly adorns it. I wouldn’t call her a businesswoman, though. She's more of a bloody tired woman trying to make a career, but not approaching new heights fast enough. Hugh Jackman is young and graceful, he looks very natural in this role, especially in contrast to the imperfect hero of Schreiber and the not fully grown hero of Meyer. But that doesn’t make them any less memorable. They are interesting, each in its own way, and cause sympathy. Getting to know Leo changes them a little. One Leo introduces to altruism, the other to the subtlety of manners. Along the way puts in place a slippery and prone to lies chief. And, of course, makes Kate feel what genuine care and tenderness means, and also understand that true nobility cannot be old-fashioned. This is its small effect on the unfamiliar world (besides the invention of the elevator).
The metaphor of the jump, which you should decide to turn your life around, let something extremely valuable into it, is well played. While the fantastic line is a bit naive and some plot twists may seem strained, the film is good because it’s about true values.
Love is a leap. Unfortunately, no one inspired me to jump.
Every woman dreams of a prince, a knight without fear or reproach, capable of a noble deed, for which his lady is sacred. And what if one day this prince is next door? A true duke, gallant, intelligent, selfless, with impeccable taste and manners and charming appearance. At the same time, his title of Duke of Albany is absolutely real, and he studied dressage and fencing at the Royal Academy. Having met such a guy, Kate McKay, a businesswoman and master of her work, simply does not believe in the reality of what is happening. She, an advertising agent, knows like no other that anything can be hidden under a chic wrapper. And Leopold, the same duke, will have to put all his strength and skills to conquer and make believe in himself the only woman who managed to conquer his heart. And let them live in different centuries - now Leo gets used to modern New York.
Magnificent Meg Ryan, like no other, is suitable for the role of an energetic businesswoman who has a lot of problems, not counting the reckless brother-actor and ex-boyfriend Stewart. She has time everywhere and forgets that in life so much can be seen and felt. The dream of any woman is easily embodied in Hugh Jackman, a handsome and talented actor in all respects, capable of instant reincarnation. Everything in him breathes nobility and restraint, his impulses are honest and sincere. He gets up as the lady enters the room and dances with the grace of the prince. Who recognizes this guy as a mutant or a vampire hunter? Completely insane when it comes to scientific research, Stewart, like a good fairy, brings Kate and Leo together. On the shoulders of Liv Schreiber lies much of the comedy component of the film. And if you think of Charlie and the dog Stuart Bart, it turns out a completely unusual, a little fantastic, amazingly cute and romantic story. A pair of completely different people by the will and imagination of James Mangold meet, and the stars converge in the sky, foreshadowing the life and love of the two.
