A family of selfish people The main characters of the film, a cute family from one-story America, did not impress me with funny and cute. Devoted to her nephews, the artist Lilia Bloom looks not a selfless loving heroine, but an infantile and careless woman who is simply afraid of independent life, afraid to make decisions and change something. Even sprinklers in the garden. The father-breadwinner, Lily’s brother, is just a weak-willed and driven person who is easier to accept the will of stronger personalities than to decide anything himself. She and her sister look alike. Charming cheerful children are real little despots, so much so that they do not recognize neither father nor aunt the right to privacy, not wanting to share them with anyone.
And here comes to this family the bride of Metch, widowed brother Lily 5 years ago, a girl from San Diego Debra (Caroline Goodall), shining with a smile in anticipation of meeting the family of the groom, admiring his house, with radiant wide-open eyes and a warm sincere smile. But all her attempts to make friends with Metch’s sister and children are broken against the wall of deaf dislike of the children, convinced that the father should belong only to them. How inventive kids are showing Debra that she's a stranger to them and they're not happy with her! And how repulsive is Lily herself, who actively takes the side of her nephews! Fearing that she, God forbid, will have to change something in her life after her brother’s marriage or (horror-horror-horror) get out of his back, she shows amazing activity for her inert nature. And they get what they want.
Absolutely not happy with the finale of the film, where the children who won, tinkering with butterflies and a dog, Lily finally decides to become independent, meeting a handsome repairman-musician, and only Metch remains alone as a finger, and Debra with a broken heart leaves for San Diego.
I am very sorry for this open, sincere girl with such a sincere smile. How touching, childishly happy engagement with a loved one, trying to please his children, preparing a delicacy, looking for a common language with Lily. And it is a pity that her chosen one turned out to be such a spineless weakling, went along with selfish relatives and sacrificed perhaps the only chance to arrange his life again. And more than once he will bitterly regret that he refused such a wonderful girl as Debra. Especially in 10 years, when the children will start independent life, will be thrown out of the house... and all that remains Metch is a house falling apart, spoiled sprinklers, and memories. And the pity that he was so weak-willed and so afraid to aggravate relations with relatives. And made a very unhappy girl who loved him.
