The movie is worth watching if you like special effects with big animals. The script was written by someone in two evenings and was drunk while writing the ending. The beginning of the film and the end show us completely different characters who somehow use the same actors and use the same names. Their actions are often unrelated to what happened on the screen just 2 minutes ago. There might have been aliens in this movie who could control human bodies. But if that's the case, then those scenes have been cut and now the film is incomprehensible.
This film tells the fascinating story of the survival of people accustomed to the urban lifestyle in the vastness of Alaska, which is fraught with a lot of dangers for the unprepared, fascinating the beauty of mountain landscapes and frightening the ruthlessness of local bloodthirsty representatives of fauna.
Li Tamahori, the director of the tape, known to a wide range of viewers for such far from ideal films as 'Three Xx 2' with Ice Cube, 'The Prophet' with Nicolas Cage and 'Die, but not now' with Pier Brosnan in the role of James Bond, he barely created a series for the best, and always worked on television. And indeed, the production of the film is at a decently high level, taking into account all the difficulties of the shooting process in uninhabited territories, surprising more than once in the process of narrating the pristine aesthetics of the surrounding world. The great merit of capturing the numerous beauties of the amazing region should be given to the operator of the picture, the mater Donald McAlpine, who already had experience in difficult natural conditions, cutting the way for his cameras in the jungle of the original Predator.
In addition to the stunning visual appearance, the film has a beautiful script written by the esteemed David Mamet, which should be familiar to lovers of good cinema for such works as the Postman always rings twice with Jack Nicholson, the Untouchables with Kevin Costner, We are not angels, and Robo/i. And, of course, a special role in the embodiment of this story in life was played by magnificent artists who revived the creative idea of the director-director, directing it in the right direction. The mind-blowing Anthony Hopkins and the masterful Alec Baldwin presented an interesting duet of characters who treat each other simultaneously with deep respect and quietly readable caution, one expressed in distrust of the sincerity of his colleague, the other in obvious neglect and even envy. A separate mention is worthy of Bart Bear, who once again proved his acting viability. No matter how ridiculous it may sound, but any viewer can see for himself the justice of this statement by carefully considering his filmography, numbering more than a dozen notable films, one of which are "The Bear", "White Fang" and "Legends of autumn".
Thus, "On the Edge" is a wonderful film about the collision of an ordinary man with Mother Nature, which will either make him better, or, more likely, will destroy without blinking an eye. Willpower, a rich level of theoretical knowledge and, most importantly, a frantic desire to survive help the hero of Anthony Hopkins to motivate others to a positive outcome from the current situation, but the notorious human factor, expressed in enduring despondency and initially unfriendly attitude to each other, will not allow everyone to get out of his captivity. Who will survive? Who will remain human? The answers are visible in every movement, in every action of the heroes. The answers are read in thoughts and heard in the phrase: "Never pity the man who owns the plane." However, material security in such life circumstances really does not matter, which is proved by the main character of the film, exposing his sincere human gut, ready to help his neighbor, despite his anger and anger. . .
Overall impression: What does "On the Edge" look like? "Survivor" and "Rogue" - mix, shake, add a pinch of suspense and on the output we get an adventure action movie about survival, with the beauty of nature. It's breathtaking!
What about the movie? Billionaire Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins) travels to Alaska with his young wife, supermodel Mickey. Professional photographer Robert (Alec Baldwin) convinced them that there was a perfect place to shoot, but there was only one place to fly. Without hesitation, Charles, Robert and assistant Stephen take a plane to the lake. But the plane crashes, miraculously escaping the trio escapes into the wilderness. The forest is insidious and contains many dangers. How to survive in the distance from civilization?
A cool action adventure, in which not so unexpected turns, but there are many! Starting with a thriller and ending with a dramatic plot, the story spreads as much as in two hours, filigree leading to the final. The film not only shows the expanses of Alaska, but also focuses on human relations. How will people behave far from civilization, where the main question is: how to survive? The interest does not leave to the end!
What to say, and the game in the film is amazing! The Hopkins-Baldwin duo are so harmonious that they are mesmerizing. The actors completely immersed themselves in their roles, acting out emotions as much as possible, as if throwing them on the viewer. I would like to say a huge thank you to the makeup artists! You can see how the characters of the tape are exhausted, in the mud, but continue their path. This is all displayed gradually. The blade of grass on the face, the bristles appear, the dirt. It’s very hard and well done.
Be sure to watch "On the Edge." Cinema is suggestive, mostly the hero of Hopkins. The psychology of behavior through gestures and facial expressions makes you not just mindlessly watch the film, but evaluate the steps of the characters. It’s a good movie, it’s worth its weight in gold.
We have become so self-confident and proud that we have almost forgotten what real, wild nature is, what power it has, and how cruel it can be to those who choose to set foot in its territory according to their own rules. With all the technical development, weapons superiority and courage to go ahead to the very end, people have repeatedly faced the power that brought them down from heaven to earth. This is not just about tsunamis and hurricanes. Sometimes the most ordinary hike in the wild wooded area can turn into a real torture, the end of which is not always happy. Being away from civilization, where there is no connection, and you can call for help only birds, a person begins to understand the value of life and the fact that he is not the owner of the whole planet, but only a part of it, which is easy to get rid of. Faced in an open, honest confrontation with a pack of wolves or an angry bear, we have almost no chance of survival. If this happens, then it is time to call a real miracle that happens in a very small number of cases. However, it must be recognized that knowledge is by no means ephemeral, but quite a practical value, capable of giving us an extra opportunity to postpone the encounter with eternity. Thus, where there are no roads, a warm shower and hot coffee, the highest value becomes not so loaded gun, as the understanding of how to get food, in what direction to move and what to do when you run aggressive wild animal. Of course, there is absolutely no guarantee that perfectly learned encyclopedic data will work for a hundred, and yet with them you can achieve much more than self-confidence. And on the example of such films as On the Edge, we see in all sinister colors what the real power of nature is and why a person should treat it with proper respect even when the scales are leaning in his direction. No one knows what will happen tomorrow. There we are likely to find an insidious trap, designed by an inexorable fate, with which jokes, of course, are bad.
So, the plot of “On the Edge” introduces us to the elderly billionaire Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins), who decides to temporarily diversify his monotonous working days and go with his young wife-model Mickey (El McPherson) to Alaska, where a photo shoot is already planned, as well as other entertainment events that cannot be reproduced in a large metropolis. Having settled in an attractive wooden mansion, in which you only want to sit by the fireplace and slowly drink what, Charles nevertheless is not going to sit in one place. After consulting with his photographer Bob (Alec Baldwin), the billionaire still decides to go a little further than his chosen camp to conduct a series of pictures for which it is worth a little risk. Immersed on a private plane, Charles, Bob, and his assistant Stephen (Harold Perrino) set out on the road, hoping to fulfill everything they wanted as soon as possible, when the unexpected happened, and the three heroes find themselves away from the planned landing, with no chance to call rescuers and realizing that the chances of returning home soon faded before their eyes. But worst of all, Mother Nature is in no hurry to leave them alone. Having angered the bear wandering nearby, the heroes are forced to urgently speed up their course, which is not at all as easy as it may seem, because not only are they exhausted, hungry and freezing, so another of them is seriously injured, and this does not go to the benefit of the survival mission. The only chance in this situation lies in the intelligence of Charles Morse, who absorbs knowledge like a sponge and before going to Alaska decided to get acquainted with the necessary material in order to have the necessary knowledge in a critical situation. In this regard, an elderly businessman becomes for his fellow misfortune virtually indispensable person, but do not forget that the group is constantly followed by a bear, he is well oriented in the area and will not miss the opportunity to achieve his. The situation is gaining critical weight with each passing hour after the disaster, and it also does not benefit from internal squabbles and knives long behind the back that can turn into a real disaster.
Starting to work on the picture, the creator of “Mulholland Rock” Lee Tamahori understood what he was getting involved in, but he did not suspect how difficult it would be in the end to shoot, because it is one thing to calculate the risks in the office, and quite another to find yourself in the wilderness, where at any moment something unexpected can happen. And yet, despite all the stresses, anxious nights and injuries, “On the Brink” was the film for which it was worth going through all the tests and thereby creating an artistic precedent that will be remembered for a long time. Tamahori paid tribute to the terrifying splendor of nature, creating a visual range and atmosphere from which, in all naturalistic nightmares, it is simply impossible to look away, but at the same time he showed us the full force of human character, which manifests itself in all its glory only when in reality it is on the edge. And the way people will manifest themselves in frankly stressful moments will adorn this film with a spectacular dramatic component, because in fact the story is much more complex than it may seem at first. Of course, the line of unexplored wildlife has a direct impact on the narrative as a whole, but at the same time the long, agonizing journey to salvation reveals before us a real dramatic splendor that spurs the convincing play of the leading cast.
Despite the fact that at the time of filming with Lee Tamahori, the brilliant Anthony Hopkins was known to the world mainly as Hannibal Lecter, he already had many fascinating, complex roles of various kinds, and not all of them are negative. It turns out that Hopkins looks organically in absolutely any hypostasis, and “On the Edge” once again confirms this. It is enough for him to look closely at one point and the viewer immediately feels the multifaceted experience of the hero Hopkins, his inner strength and intelligence. But this is only a small fraction of the acting potential of a Hollywood veteran who always tries to give himself to the shooting until the very end. No less intriguing image got here and Alec Baldwin, who of course had to try to keep up with his older colleague, while being the complete opposite of calm, confident Charles Morse, not discouraged even in the face of probable death. Baldwin plays explosively, sometimes you do not know what to expect from him, that is what his character is interesting in a pair with Hopkins.
In the end, I want to say that “On the Edge” surprises and amazes. The film is well worth watching.
“What if your worst enemy is your only chance to survive?” ?
“When someone gives you a knife, give him a coin so the knife doesn’t cut your friendship.” – Charles
Very good movie. The pinnacle of fame directed by Lee Tamahori. Remembering such a movie and think: here before, what gorgeous films were made, and this film is without any praise excellent!
The duet in it is remarkable in the person of the brilliant actor Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin. When directing a film along with a clear and clean acting at a high level, then this is success, this is a really good movie.
In this story we see a billionaire and his beautiful wife model. They fly to Alaska for a picturesque photo shoot, and according to the photographer, he knows a great place. Arriving there, the men fly in a tiny plane in search of the place, but an accident happens and the plane crashes in the winter forest, hundreds of kilometers from civilization. The billionaire and the photographer survived, and together try to escape in the wild, but the problem is that the billionaire begins to realize that the photographer is the lover of his wife.
We all get tested and they are not always what we would like.
The story is great, and put it in this film is great and spectacular on the shelves. The viewer is waiting for an incredible, dangerous adventure in which people are forced to fight for life, and human passions boil where they are not needed at all.
The film is made qualitatively and atmospherically. I remember a series of unexpected scenes from which you are constantly surprised. Everything is happening with eyes wide open. It is impossible to predict the end, and you constantly think: how it will end, how it will end. The tension can be cut with a knife, and therefore the film looks with great pleasure.
Both Perkins and Baldwin played chic. They played on an equal footing, so just bravo. This is a rare film that can be revisited over time. We see the story of how fragile humans can be outside of civilization, and how strong they can be. Each of us has a huge potential, and the desire to survive is huge and knows no boundaries. By the way, the cult scenes with the bear here are the most impressive, and it is they that you remember when thinking about this film.
On the Brink is a 1997 American adventure drama. Cinema is in the list of favorite films, and for those who have not yet seen this wonderful movie, I recommend watching. Thank you.
I remember that movie on the videotape. I remember my childhood feelings of unsettling empathy for the character played by Anthony Hopkins. Like many paintings of that time, this artistic product was framed for me by a special atmosphere of struggle between internal and external. On the one hand, the hero is faced with savage conditions in which he has no practical experience, on the other hand, with the constant expectation of an encroachment on life on the part of a fellow unfortunate. And I remember the mysticism and mystery that accompanied me while watching.
I remember and irretrievably lose all the magic of cinematic storytelling when I sit down and watch this film now. The ridiculous twists of the plot and the situation on the verge of comics simply exceed all the limits of the permissible. And the return of the heroes to the crash site and the occasional case of an African-American friend who injures his leg with a knife, etc. etc., all this does not allow to believe the story. The bear's behavior alone is enough to understand how everything is drawn and rigged here. A set of situations put together just to get us to the climax.
Neither the acting nor the landscapes of snowy Alaska save this film from my negative assessment, which also carries with it the great disappointment of the inner child, who cherished with trepidation the memory of a subtle and beautifully told idea: knowledge and humanity conquer both natural dangers and human vices.
All my life I wanted to do something unambiguous.
The more I watch or think about this movie, the more it becomes one of my favorites. Great Hopkins game and even more, to me, Baldwin's best game. Magnificent blowing, excellent and very tense natural atmosphere!
This is a powerful film because it is very wise and vital. This is a film about generosity and the destruction of the stereotype of biased attitudes of some people towards any rich person. The film can be divided into quotations for a long time. Each of you will find something for yourself. If you like wise and exciting movies, be sure to watch!
Excellent soundtrack. Natural photography of wildlife in the expanses of Alaska. Breathtaking scenes are very expensive. I really enjoyed it all!
At the end of the film, I let down a tear, and the line in the title of my review is, to me, the strongest of this film. I was impressed by the main character, his character and generosity. The film will give you a lot of impressions, it is very vital and beautiful!
If it weren’t for the minor flaws in terms of logic and the unspecified moments inherent in Hollywood cinema, which any viewer will notice, I would put the top ten. But it doesn't matter! One of the best movies I've seen.
In my opinion, this is just an amazing film. You could start and end with this sentence, but I think this assessment deserves explanation.
The adventure film directed by Lee Tamahori tells about human survival in the wild. A group of three people find themselves lost in the mountains of Alaska after a plane crash and try to find their way home, while having nothing in their arsenal except a small folding knife and a few matches. Everything would be fine, but not only that the heroes were in such a difficult situation, but also the relationship between them is not the best.
Photographer Bob (Alec Baldwin) and his assistant Stephen (Harold Perrino) along with elderly billionaire Charles (Anthony Hopkins) are the ones who will be riveted for two hours. And also to the big clubfoot bear, which is not averse to terrorize people and grab a piece of meat from them.
"On the Edge" is a very beautiful film. And that's his first virtue. The views of Alaska, the charm of snow-capped mountains, age-old pines, mountain rivers and waterfalls, calm lakes, wildlife and its pristineness are not only beautiful from an aesthetic point of view, but also inspire respect for their greatness. On the example of the main characters or just being out of town in the forest, you understand how insignificant you are in comparison with the rest of the world.
The second plus is a great job with animals. I once again express my admiration for the animals themselves and those who work with them. Dressure is really a great job. It's one thing to train cats and dogs, and it's another for wild animals. For example, lions as in Ghost and Darkness or bears as in On the Brink. Bear Bart, whom the viewer saw in the films “Legends of Autumn”, “White Fang” and “Together with Didles”. Bears have been dead for 17 years, but his role in the Tamahori project is one of the brightest for him (no matter how strange it sounds in relation to the bear) and the most qualitatively displayed by the directors on the screen.
The third is a great plot, thanks to which the viewer can see not only the process of survival of people in the wild, but also watch how they (people) are forced, despite disagreements, to unite for survival. And it's great that the script doesn't spill over into trivial development when they become one team. It is great that they remain themselves without changing their beliefs and view of certain things.
The fourth is a magnificent dramatic denouement, following which you feel regret for one of the heroes and see that a person can remain a person despite external factors, that he himself decides to become a beast for him, or preserve his human appearance.
Fifth, thanks to those tips and ways to survive in nature, the viewer can at least be savvy, if he finds himself in some kind of trouble.
On the Brink combines elements of drama, thriller, horror and adventure. This is actually a great movie from all points of view, thanks to which you can go on a trip without leaving home and watch the exciting spectacle, not including the news release.
But look at you. I do not impose my opinion on anyone.
Personally, the picture made a good impression on me. Quite an unusual story of the film. It tells of a rich man who has a fortune. He is brought to Alaska, which presents him with a serious ordeal, in the form of mortal danger, in addition to this, he feels that there is a dubious personality in his environment.
In an interesting way, the presentation of material is presented. Of course, such people can be in real life. Despite the fact that a person can be a billionaire, in addition to this, he can be hardened in terms of survival in harsh conditions. If such a person is trustworthy, in the absence of selfish thoughts in him, then it is better to trust this person than to just sit down, be ashamed of yourself and show inaction in a distance from civilization. Although the chances are very small, meet in reality this type of people.
Nature in Alaska looks beautiful. Fast rivers with a strong current, snow-capped hilly mountains, dense forest – these natural views are simply impressive. Episodes with a furious bear, chasing on the heels of the main characters - came out with a bright spectacle.
Anthony Hopkins (Charles Morse) played perfectly. The character is open, and very versatile, knows a lot about survival and not only about it. Alec Baldwin (Bob) adequately performed the image of an envious and doubtful person.
"On the brink" - a kind of thriller, saturated with full semantic load in all its glory. A film that feels very stressful. The tape can be considered as a psychological drama, in which an unpredictable ending and ending make you think after watching.
It's a shame we don't have salt. Did you know you could spice meat with gunpowder? - Too bad we don't have gunpowder...
In my top ten best winter films, The Edge ranks first. I usually watch it in December.
Strong movie. Not just another variation on the theme of “survive at all costs.” And not only that an extreme situation always exposes the true essence of a person. No, it's much deeper.
Charles Morse is sixty years old. He is intelligent, impossible, he has excellent erudition, with the help of which Charles regularly and with pleasure acts on the nerves of others. Over his shoulders very fruitfully lived years - successful business over time made him a billionaire.
Money has long ceased to be a problem, health is no worse than thirty years ago, next to a young beautiful wife. What else can I dream of? Of course, there is a downside to the coin. But he learned to calmly perceive anger, envy and criticism.
“Never know who your friends are. You never know why people value you. It must be hard, says Bob Greene, accompanying Morsov on a trip to Alaska. Robert is an ambitious professional photographer, and as usual, he is in love with one of his models. Nothing, but this woman-- Mickey Morse... And this is not the only reason why Bob has a burning dislike for Charles.
Alec Baldwin is playing what I think is the best role of his career. It plays so brightly that you see on the screen not a windy handsome man (as he was, for example, in the Habit of Marriage), but a burnt cynic, a man without principles. Alec never for a second lost in the shadow of the great and terrible Lecturer.
Hopkins had only seen Mask Zorro before this film, so the associations were not with Hannibal. Don Diego de la Vega is certainly a chic Anthony role, but here he played more filigree.
- You want to die here? All right, then die. I'm not gonna die. No, sir, I'm not dying. I'll kill that bear. Say, "I'll kill the bear!"
Speaking of bears. This Bart is a bear. A fierce monster on the set, outside of them he was the intelligence itself. He starred in films for 17 years, took part in the 70th Oscar ceremony (academics, greedy people, did not give the beast a statuette). So Bart was a real social lion, sorry, a bear. He plays much better than Anthony and Alec combined.
Separate bravo to operator. Of course, I will note the beautiful landscapes of Alaska (and yet it was ours first, and then American). It's so nice to see this beauty with the beautiful music of Jerry Goldsmith.
Lee Tamahori made a great thriller.
9 out of 10
P.S. Mr. Morse, drowned people don't get rescued like that.
What do you think will be a film about people trapped in the wild without food, water or communication? Most likely, it will be about how these people will survive in these conditions before they are saved or find a way to escape. But the thriller “On the Edge” does not talk about this at all.
At first glance, this movie has everything for a survival adventure drama. A plane crash, several survivors, no supplies to help them survive, and no one knows where to find the missing. Also, the local bear desperately wanted human meat, and he decided to eat it at all costs. But the problem is that the film has very little to do with the survival of the main characters. For example, I never saw what they ate, where they took water, but judging by the vegetation on their face, the stay in the forest was at least a week. This is the main drawback of the film.
So what's this movie about? It is more suitable for the genre of psychological thriller than survival dramas. You see, our heroes don't like each other. That's not to say the least. But at the same time, they need each other. Only working together will save their lives. Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins) is so erudite that he knows how to survive in the forest, although he has no practice in this field. And he needs Robert Green (Alec Baldwin) because he's young and strong. So, without his help, the elderly Charles can not do. But what happens when they stop needing each other? At this point, I recall Alfred Hitchcock's classic film, "In the case of murder, type an M." One of the characters says there is no perfect murder. But "On the Brink" provides all the conditions for such a murder. Wildlife, no witnesses, not even a corpse to hide. It is enough to mention the attack of a bear and no one will look for a corpse. And the movie kept me on edge. Who would be tempted to take advantage of such an opportunity? And if someone uses it, will he have the strength to bring it to the end?
This film makes up for its main drawback. Add in the great acting of Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin and we have a great movie that I recommend.
A real Hollywood movie, as they were shot in the 80-90s, and which I miss so much.
Billionaire Charles Morse arrives with his wife Mickey and a film crew in Alaska. Charles' plane crashes, and in the deserted forest are the survivors of Charles, photographer Robert Green and assistant Stephen.
History at the crossroads of genres. Here and adventure, because the company will have to look for help, overcoming the path surrounded by the amazing beauty of the landscapes of Alaska, and the notes of the thriller, because they are followed by a cannibal bear. But the main storyline is the love triangle of Charles-Mickey-Robert.
Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin play very well, even Elle McPherson, shedding tears over her men, is touchingly beautiful. But my audience award in the category “best actor” goes to the bear Bert.
History, say, instructive and with meaning: “Do not dig another hole...”
But the film has its flaws. I may have revisited the art house, but somehow I don't believe that traveling through the tundra changed Charles and Robert so little. Man alone with nature just throws away conventions. But it was necessary to loom on the horizon of civilization, as the former passions in the souls of the heroes raise their heads.
There are minor shortcomings... In addition to the already discussed idea to use a needle and a piece of silk for the manufacture of a compass (and then the characters are already guided by the stars), these are bearish half-coats. I may have wanted to see Charles stand up for a makeshift tannin workshop! They didn’t dry the skins just on fire!!
Overall, it's a very good movie. It is unlikely to make you think about anything, but a pleasant evening in front of the screen will be provided!
It's late spring 2016. And I saw a 1997 movie. Yes!
After viewing the idea arose that all the most interesting, important, “turning”, if you will, happens in life unexpectedly. You can pursue a dream, a woman, a position, etc., as long as you like, and life - boom! - and throws out the trout. And your way of life changes, and you begin to live in a new way, perhaps even much better, but not at all as planned, yes.
There you go. Today (before that) I watched two more masterpieces of the genre Survival, but simpler and newer. In one teenagers were frozen on the lift, in the other – frying in the sauna. It's cruel, of course. Soon they will shoot about survival in Linechka, WoW, VK and WC. WC is water closed. And the line in “Makdaki” no one canceled, for example. Go for a day without cats, yeah!
And what do these trish crafts, where the “heroes” themselves created problems, have in common with the real classic films “On the Brink”, “Climbing”, “Survive” and the like? And this is a clear division of the plot into "before" and "after" a certain turning event - turning off the lift, closing the door, the final jump into the water from the board, the crash of the plane, any other breakdown or disaster ... Well, that's right, and it should be according to the laws of the genre. But there is a problem with the implementation of the “before” segment. In the new films, the implementation of clumsy and defective is reduced to verbal planning of a happy future life (which, of course, will not come), and at the output is a kind of info-noise designed to fill the time and distract the viewer from waiting for the event itself. Like, "tra-ta-ta, everything is fine, and then "on" you!" There are other tricks, but not about that. As a result, we either have a hack, or, on the contrary, count on the corresponding perception. Old-fashioned films are made more holistically, with cast characters and minimal dialogue. GG coped, plot looped, curtain. And now? Rescued-dopolz-pumped - credits. You want to eat, you want to drink.
But back to the bears. “On the Edge” is a very worthy film with beautiful atmospheric views and panoramas. It has flaws, of course, but it is interesting. And it's well shot. What else do you need? Maybe a live bear? He is! And, to be honest, he was great. This is a full-fledged role in the film.
Well, it would not be entirely fair to compare the classics only with low-budget unideal crafts. Therefore, I will say that today there are curious representatives of the genre. For example, the acclaimed "Survivor." But, as they say, "not a shmagla." He didn't come to me.
If you want a good movie, look for it in the 90s. Thanks to "On the Brink" again convinced.
I'm not a zoologist, but the bear's behavior is puzzling. Where does a bear suddenly attack a bunch of people? You followed them around? And to kill him, you need to wave a wooden peg, although the bear should move 1 paw with claws so that nothing remains of the person.
And humans are super-robots. Their main concern is to determine that they must go south. No matter what the mountains ahead, and they have no food, the heroes cheerfully jump and run for several days, and without thinking about food! At the same time, they also get wet in the rain, but they do not threaten hypothermia and do not need to dry, because they are supermen and are not afraid of either cold or hunger.
And how famously they built themselves clothes out of bear skins! they would be envious of any Indian, given that they have 1 knife pen and no skills and other devices. The skin should at least be dried, I think. And such a carcass is difficult to cut quickly, because when the bear stiffens, then it would not be realistic to cut it.
Why would Americans think about it? In this wilderness they find a house with all the amenities of the forest and begin to philosophize. Even if an American has a wound on his leg, he cannot close his mouth. All his mental and physical strength he spends on memories of the affair. What kind of man in extreme conditions, on the verge of survival, needs some beauty? Here everything superfluous disappears immediately. But no Americans once again needed to be reminded of the banal truth that there are few selfless young beautiful women, wives of billionaires.
A film about the personal, about what is deep, deep in the soul, about love, about strength of spirit, about forgiveness. And also about wildlife, about how to survive in the wild, and not just survive, but remain a decent person.
Just a few words about the director. Lee Tamahori, a New Zealand director, began as a photographer, engaged in advertising, after the first film noted in Venice moved to Hollywood, where he shot several iconic films, including even one of the films about James Bond.
And a word about the plot. Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins), a billionaire, charming, well-educated, in love with a young wife, supermodel, Mickey, and her young lover, Robert Greene (Alec Baldwin), such a love triangle. For more spiciness, everyone goes to Alaska to be photographed. Nature in pristine, virgin form and all that. In Alaska, relaxed lovers, without realizing it, open Charles' eyes to the true state of things. Not having time to discharge the situation, still discharged in the most unexpected way, the plane with Charles and Robert, colliding in flight with birds falls into the lake. And personal relationships seem to fade into the background, /the question of survival comes to the fore. Because in the action comes another character, grizzly bear, as later will be the cannibal, / bear cannibal, brilliantly played, bear Bart.
The heroes of the film are waiting not only for the real pristine northern nature and adventures in the style of Jack London, but also other, other, other things. The viewer will not be bored.
Someone will certainly be very interested in the line of human survival in the wild, but a serious viewer will undoubtedly pay attention to other aspects.
What about Charles Morse? It seems that a person struggled all his life, achieved something significant, and was engaged in education all his free time, but it turned out that something was still missed. Being one on one with wildlife, he, among other things, has to deal with the lost, and at the same time with his not always correct ideas about life. And not always the right ideas about yourself, about this life. And also with their ideas of honor, decency, love, responsibility and duty. The duty of an honest man and a loving man. To do this, he will have to use his intuition, intellectual baggage, and strength of spirit.
And of course, everything will not be at all what was possible, (such are we, people are not able to imagine what insidious, sophisticated, unpredictable life circumstances can be). And all this against the background of the fact that in the wild survives the strongest.
And Charles will have to fight not only with wildlife, a hungry bear, a calculating lover of his wife, but also with his terrible beast in the soul. Moreover, this latter, as we understand, is the most terrible thing, and it is not enough to survive physically, it is still necessary to survive spiritually. Become stronger spiritually.
Otherwise, what's the point? Order in life can be brought in one way, first you need to restore order in the soul. And then everything else. You don’t have to prove to anyone that you are a real man. Because you are the strongest.
It also means that you are not living in this land for nothing.
On the edge has long been on the shelf of my favorite films and, however, like all the films present there, do not have time to dust.
The subject of man and nature or the theme of Robinson Cruz has always been of interest to most viewers. From time to time, from film to film, I want to watch the confrontation between man and nature for their right to survive, this desperate struggle with themselves. To observe how many new things a person can discover in himself, being in such conditions, what he can go to and sacrifice for his life. If you, like me, are interested in this topic, then the film Li Tamahori you will definitely have to taste.
On the Brink is another story where people test themselves for strength and spirit. This is an excellent male film about difficult people, about the different relationships between them, and, of course, about the collision of man and wildlife.
Perhaps the plot will seem banal and worn out to you, but in such films the plot is always the same, whether it is the crash of a plane, a ship or something else. The question here is whether the film can keep the viewer’s attention in the future. And as for me, "On the edge" copes with this task perfectly. The film looks dynamic, interesting, in certain places tense and generally very cool. The fact is that in addition to the story itself and its development, this film is interesting to watch the characters themselves and how they evolve and change. It is boring to watch sugary characters, between whom there is no conflict, much more interesting to see how people hate each other, but at the same time stick together for the sake of a so-called common goal. And the adventure of the main characters looks original, without any sagging and boring moments. Of course, in the film there is something to complain about and it sometimes just catches the eye, but on the overall excellent background of the picture, all this dissolves.
A lot of the film was taken out by the actors. Anthony Hopkins for his age looked very cheerful and energetic in such a film, a kind of cheerful sage. About his acting I think it makes no sense to talk, right? Alec Baldwin personally my surprise looked very colorful and interesting in this film, maybe because I originally did not make any bets on him, and in vain. But the presence of Harold Perrino here was not that superfluous, but why his character was inserted, and then so sharply removed, I think it is clear, because the authors of the film wanted to show the story of only two main characters.
In general, "On the Brink" is a very high-quality and strong adventure film on a fairly well-known and common topic.
Revisited a good old era of my student film. The psychological adventure drama unfolds against the backdrop of the wild North American forests, convincingly emphasizes: do not go children into the forest. In the film, children are absent to their happiness, but nature is not only sweet and desirable for mature people. I love such films, even if they are played by low-interest actors, albeit highly paid actors. However, this comment does not apply to this film. The task, very difficult for residents of megacities, is to survive away from civilization, in a wild forest full of wild animals, among which human individuals are the most cruel and vile on the entire planet Earth, as a rule, which is generally no longer news for anyone. A film from the category of those that, even with a great dislike for Hollywood products, is worth watching. Sure, like an entertaining movie. But that's for the time being. It happens all over life...
The plot of this film is quite simple: it is a story of survival in extreme (for an urban dweller) conditions of wild northern nature. As a bonus added conflict between two men over one woman. It turns out that the conflict of culture and nature occurs on two levels - external (at the level of confrontation with the elements, rain, snow, forest beast) and internal (at the level of emotions, sexual impulses, etc.).
It’s not that it makes On the Brink deeper, but it definitely adds to the poignancy and drama. The film is quite bright, tickling nerves. This does not prevent even a somewhat implausible story with a bear, which is unclear from what scare so persistently pursues the heroes, while showing miracles of intelligence and fearlessness. Also not very convincing character Baldwin - a cowardly and mean whiner, sometimes for some reason forgetting about his meanness and whining - such an impression that he is exactly in order to maximally shade the powerful figure of the inimitable Hopkins, who with one gaze says more than other characters in a long monologue.
And the whole film is designed to demonstrate the greatness of this man, who is rich and smart and subtle and kind and forgiving. He is surrounded on all sides by the misfortunes and betrayal of loved ones, and he, as if nothing had happened, calmly copes with everything and does not punish anyone - this is not even the biblical, but some Buddhist way.
Such a wise hare does not need a pipe to not be afraid of a panther, he is his own pipe. One thing is unclear: why would he bother with this animal? These are such small things that he cannot pay attention to them.
I have only two questions that can be swapped, depending on the importance - although both are vital. What would you do if you knew that your loved one was cheating on you? What would you do if you were in the wild forests of Alaska or Siberia? For me, these two questions became the most important in the film “On the Edge”.
They face the main character literally at the beginning of the film. It is impossible to think of a worse situation: at the same time your inner world collapses (a young wife cheats with a photographer) and the outer world - being a millionaire (though not a pampered luxury), the main character turns out to be with a rival in the wild forests of Alaska, where they need to survive. Add to the plot of the expression: the heroes are chased by a man-eater bear (this is a bear that at least once tasted human beings, will never eat other food).
I will not retell the plot so that those who did not look will think and wonder whether someone will survive, and if so, how and in what way. Most of all in the film, I was struck, impressed and surprised by the generosity of the main character, who, in principle, did not need to drag a nunny-rival-smear-(type-cool-boy) to survive in the forests. On the contrary, the snot-rival has repeatedly stressed that he wants to kill his opponent - and notice, not because he loves his wife, but because he is a millionaire. But God is with him, and he is miserable.
Let me add a brief summary: the movie is worth watching. For the sake of the most beautiful landscapes of Alaska (it is a pity that then was not filmed in 3D, and it is a pity that Alaska is not ours); drama and passion (we must give credit to the actors - two actors for almost 2 hours do ALL!!! film) ... and for the sake of Sir Anthony Hopkins, who is worth watching in any film, because he is always brilliant, in essence ... He is a human being who, being himself (which, in my opinion, is the skill of an actor) can play any role.
For some reason, New Zealand film director Lee Tamahori is often accused of plagiarism. That is, the director takes the already studied methods of shooting and recklessly uses them. Especially these attacks were subjected to his picture “The Prophet” with Nicholas Cage, Julian Moore and Jessica Biel in the lead roles. Well, first of all, who said it was bad? If the director can use the tried-and-tested material and does it skillfully, then who is against it? No one is going to get hurt, that’s for sure. And, secondly, it would be nice to turn to the initial paintings of Lee Tamahori. As, for example, for the film, which received the official title “On the Edge” with Sir Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin and Bear Bart in the lead roles. Where they recognize plagiarism is unknown, rather, they will scour only out of envy.
On the Edge was written by screenwriter David Mamet, who has such a track record that just hang on. Among his works: collaboration in the films “Hannibal” (where he will again be in the same picture with Sir Anthony Hopkins), “Ronin” (and here will not refuse to play Robert De Niro himself, although this will be another of their work after “We are not angels”) and “The Postman always calls twice” (and here Jack Nicholson will declare himself in full voice). So Mamet doesn't really do a bad job. And “On the Edge”, I must say, one of his most serious films. It turned out a kind of interesting genre: a psychological adventure mixed with drama. This is hard to find in all the films on the planet, so who else can blame Li Tamahori for plagiarism? Excellently shot picture, which throughout the time keeps in suspense, and empathy for the main characters is off the scale.
As for the genre. The psychology of On the Brink is expressed in a subtle duel created by Sir Anthony Hopkins and his opponent in the film, but a friend by misfortune performed by Alec Baldwin. Remember the subtle psychological duel in The Silence of the Lambs that made Hopkins a planetary star in the blink of an eye? So, in the tape “On the edge” his hero is no worse. Only this time he is not a maniac cannibal, but the only hope for salvation. A person with a rational mind, a person who absorbs books in one sitting and can remember everything he read. He was able to test his knowledge when he was cut off from civilization in the middle of a cold forest, and on the heels of him and the surviving two heroes is pursued by a huge man-eater bear. And at the same time, the hero of Hopkins rescues ... the lover of his young wife (this is Baldwin’s hero!). Without blinking, Hopkins realizes that his wife’s lover has decided to eliminate the enemy, and there he is waiting for a rich life in the arms of a young woman. But if not for the fall of the plane, if not for the bear, if not for the cold.
In such an atmosphere, when you tell yourself that you are lucky that you are not in the place of the main characters, and there is a psychological competition, played in brilliant style by two great actors. This drama needs to be watched and remembered, especially by young actors, because in On the Brink there is much to learn from the more experienced, masterful and skillful actors Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin. These two managed, with all the field shots, which perfectly shot the cameraman Donald McAlpine (in my opinion, he deserved if not awards, then at least nominations for his excellent work), to create a dynamically developing action, which, as already mentioned, does not let go for a second and keeps in constant tension. But for all the words of praise to the actors (by the way, the third, but quickly left the screen actor Harold Perrino was also a very integral attitude to his hero) without painstaking and, most importantly, verified directing and brightly written script such a bright film would not work. And I would like to ask the character of Elle McPherson: how could she exchange someone like Anthony Hopkins for someone like Alec Baldwin? And somehow it is a pity that this actress has long ceased to act, even in a small fragment of the film “On the Edge” she is remembered, so the talent was, it was necessary to develop.
" On the Edge is a film for those who are happy to see a serious movie, which is rapidly and, most importantly, diversely developing, and moreover, the film still has a brilliant acting game. Look, do not miss the movie "On the edge" - a pleasant feeling from seeing a great movie provided!

P.S.: In the cast there is a bear Bart. Specially trained, of course, the bear, but interestingly another: this predator has already starred with Anthony Hopkins in the film “Legends of Autumn”. A star among the animals is Bart.
A film about survival in the wild, where the natural factor does not want to destroy a person, much more effort is made by the local fauna, in particular the bear. Zoo shooting is the main advantage of this picture. The beast was allowed very close and without any computer graphics, it looked impressive. And what a graceful predator bear, plush killing machine - I pay tribute to the heroes of this picture, I could not even take a step.
Also interesting is the subject of wealth. A successful person will forever be surrounded by hypocritical people who will climb “friend” for profit. The most important thing is to stay human and really want a positive outcome. You will see it, you will see it, and it will burn out.
I will recommend the film for viewing, it is interesting, dynamic, with good acting work and again, with realistic zoo shootings that are really fascinating.
I wish everyone a pleasant viewing!!
When someone gives you a knife, give them a coin so the knife doesn’t cut your friendship.
Billionaire Charles Morse goes with his young wife, supermodel Mickey, to Alaska for a photo shoot. The billionaire loves to spend his free time reading books. He is very smart and likes to shine his knowledge in public. Everything would be fine, only here is a young photographer Robert Greene clearly not exactly breathing for his beautiful wife, who does not deny him this. It is not clear what film they are shooting and why these photos are made. And suddenly, the photographer thinks that he wants to take a picture of a local Indian who lives somewhere in the wilderness. So a photographer, a billionaire and some black freeloader go on a plane trip and... and find themselves in the woods alone with wildlife.
If you invest 30-40 million in this place, then ...
- aaaa
- Excuse me what?
For a while I thought you were just a polite person.
El McPherson is the wife of a billionaire. She did not create an image of a loving wife. Five minutes of screen time, all she does is smile. As a gift to her husband, she gives a watch engraved on the back. A banal image.
Once you have tried a man, the bear will hunt him all his life. He will never forget the taste of human flesh.
Alec Baldwin - this character turned out to be interesting, as during the film he develops. Once in difficult conditions, it breaks down. He lacks confidence, courage and, most importantly, intelligence. Ability to think in difficult conditions. The more trouble befalls the main characters - the more he hysterics and thwarts anger at Charles.
Tests never come to us in the form we prefer.
Harrold Perino played some obscure nigger. What's he doing in this movie? Why do we need this character? There must be someone to give to the bear. All I've heard from him is that they all depend on Charles. It depends, of course, in material terms.
Many lost people die of guilt. What did I do wrong? How did I end up in this situation? And instead of thinking how to be saved, they sit and die.
Anthony Hopkins is the billionaire Charles. I must say, I've never seen such a young Anthony before. Yeah, he's already gray, but he looks buoyant. Throughout the film, he tells a bunch of facts that would never be useful to him in ordinary life. Once in the wild, his character is dramatically transformed. While two of his comrades snot that they will not survive, he confidently says that they will survive. There is also a problem with his lack of friends. He believes that all the people around him are with him only for money.
Never pity a man who owns a private plane
There is another important line here: the line of competition between two men for a woman. Charles saw the photographer and his wife looking at each other. He knows everything. It is not difficult to guess how this competition ends.
Bart Bear is the most famous trained bear in the world. He's so handsome. It weighs about 700 kg and is 2.5 meters tall. Well learned. It is also worth noting that his face is much more emotional than that of a local Indian.
The film as a whole turned out to be very high-quality and dynamic. The music during the movement is somewhat reminiscent of motifs from the Hobbit. Panoramic views, and in general the surrounding nature just fascinates the eyes.
Everyone needs money, what is money? Multiplied laziness on the desire to play big (c)
Wealth is a game in which financial luck accompanies those who know something and are not afraid of something. Over time, each new info-portion becomes an excuse for another fear and preserves some billionaire, leaving behind dissatisfaction with the holocaust of fully capable capabilities. Charles Morris is the very rich man: far from being young, forever buried in a book, he is nostalgic for those days when he was a super-initiative scumbag raising his first millions. His crisis is exacerbated by the entourage of vultures who only want to snatch a piece of luxurious life with a personal plane and a beautiful wife. Robert Greene is one of these hangers: being a complacent scumbag, he is ready to take a bad risk for the sake of the capricious “I want.”
The endless forests, mountains and lakes of Alaska leave the parasite and the host alone, but do not leave time for their confrontation. Delusional horror stories about a man-eater bear become no less delusional reality, in which the animal pursuing the heroes is endowed with the qualities of a killer from a horror movie: tracks down the victim, suddenly finds himself near her, kills only for the sake of murder, and in battle, his paw shows that Kom-tsu-mi. For more template, there is not enough knife in the paw and scenes of attack in the shower. All these absurdities can cause mocking laughter in the modern viewer, but its manic bear symbolizes an external threat, which for some time brings together the feuding Morris and Green.
Despite the cast with Hopkins and Baldwin, despite the majesty of the naturalistic shooting, despite the impressive role of the Bear Bart, the main advantage of the film is symbolism. He is everywhere: Green gives Morris a knife, which hints at aggression, later a personal plane, emphasizing success, crashes, which treacherously sinks the survival benefit in the wild. Such signs, superstitions and clues raise the true relationship between the characters, which for some reason are not spoken out loud. This approach evokes the feeling of the Cold War, in which the opponents are clearly marked, and the fight between them is absent only for lack of evidence.
Slightly foreign looks secondary companion of the rich and sycophant. The African-American, with a completely un-American name Stefan, is just baffling with his dreads and goofy "Yow." Why is he here? Except as a symbol of the 90s, drowning in hip-hop, the urbanity of which so contrasts with the natural terrain for our ancestors. The disappearance of the third superfluous aggravates the conflict between the erudite and the enterprising, the privacy of relations which unnaturally goes off the scale. This intimacy suggests that the Old Wallet and the Young Crook are only different qualities of one person.
As evidence, we recall the mystery of the paddle, on one side of which there is a panther, and on the other - a rabbit smoking a pipe. Since the eared one does not panic, because he is wiser than a cat, the viewer immediately becomes clear: which of the main characters is smart, and which is a predator. But more importantly, these are the sides of one oar, which, being the basis of the equipment for the descent along the Life River, still remains bilateral. And while in the frame reign the movie templates a la “beware – a cliff”, “sudden panic increase in voice” and “you need to survive no matter what”, a battle is played out in front of the viewer, in which the victory is not the trait that causes more damage, but the one that saves from the approaching death. In this battle, we will not find the answer to the question “What is more important than knowledge or intelligence?”, just as Charles and Robert did not find a true Indian in the snowy wilderness. It was as if nothing was true as the truth itself.
What if your life depends on the person you slowly hate? That's because he's sleeping with your wife. Oh, yeah, you're also a billionaire. Is it that you are a billionaire? There is a great quote in the film that answers this question:
- So much money, so much responsibility. You never know who your friend is. You don't know who appreciates you. Is this really hard?
It's already a pretty delicate situation. But the climax is that this phrase is uttered by the guy you're starting to hate. So it turns out that from a person who seems to understand you, but at the same time cannot be pleasant, your survival depends on you because of the above fact.
This is where Charles Morse found himself. Far from being a young man, but with a young, energetic and physically stronger Robert Green. Charles loves to read, and therefore has a truly fantastic knowledge, but knowledge alone is not enough. He needs someone else to survive.
The film describes many of the “faces” through which the characters passed. They were on the verge of death, killing each other, even in terms of psychological state. I had to sacrifice someone to save myself. I think it’s simply impossible to describe everything you see. I won't even try. The film touches a lot: for the living and just human. “It is better to see once than to hear a hundred times.”
The actor duet in the person of Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin perfectly coped with the task. Absolutely no claims to them, during the space, did not arise. Even more, I liked this duet. Separately, I want to highlight the bear. At first I thought it wasn’t real, but when I found out it was a live bear, I was amazed. The actors are such masters of their craft that they played next to a live bear, albeit trained. It's breathtaking.
It's a Cree symbol. On one side of the panther, on the other is her victim. The rabbit is sitting. Not afraid. Smoking a pipe. Traditional motive. - Why isn't he afraid? - Because he's smarter than a panther.
On the Edge - the film is certainly interesting, powerful, diverse and in its genre color and abundance of acting and directing impromptu. In fact, being a firmly and qualitatively shot adventure film about the survival of a modern, pampered man in the conditions of primitive nature, it carries features and dramas, revealing to us a magnificent story about love, friendship, rivalry, betrayal and spiritual growth of an already mature person. Watching such films is always interesting - first of all, the rabid energy of the human struggle for life with the accompanying dangers of wildlife attracts attention, on the other hand - the clash of human characters, the process of changing heroes, from which side the director will teach this story and what is the morality this time.
In extreme conditions, a person shows his most important, sometimes even deeply hidden features - this is a recognized fact when watching "On the Edge" comes to the fore and gives us a brilliant performance of the hero Anthony Hopkins. To be honest at the beginning of the film, Charles, already an elderly billionaire, withdrawn, erudite, feeling awkward in a motley company led by his wife, who came to shoot for the magazine, looked superfluous at this celebration of the lives of young and attractive bodies. He kept aloof for a reason, watching the seething youth, carefully studying the next book. And for a reason, he earned his fortune, every gesture, look, every movement betrayed a man of strong-willed and insightful, “says little and does much.” He gazes condescendingly at the flirtation of his wife with the photographer Rob, but until this secret relationship begins to interfere with his well-being. The plot of the film will seem a little long, but it is in it that all the salt, bravo to the director, not a single word from the dialogue can not be thrown out, not a single scene looks superfluous! Whether it’s a parable about a panther and a rabbit, a joke between his wife and Rob on Charles’ birthday – the stuffed bear in this scene is a subtle hint of subsequent events. The director, through hints, symbols, draws the world of the main characters to the viewer, and we understand that the events following the helicopter crash were predictable and determined from the very beginning.
With the crash of a helicopter begins the most exciting, interesting and energetic part of the film. Young, represented by the survivor Rob and the helper of the Negro, strong healthy young men begin to fight in hysterics, only wetting their legs, winding snot on their fist and shouting all sorts of nonsense in the style of “We will all die!”, “Oh God, we have nothing to eat!” and other heresy. But Charles, initially the weakest link in their trinity due to his age and unsportsmanlike form, could not afford such a luxury as hysteria, quickly brought his remarkable knowledge to the light and began to apply it in practice with alternate success. Here you and the compass of improvised materials warganized and built a trap to have lunch was something. The longer the heroes were away from the city, the more hunger and cold constrained their movements, atrophied the brain, dulled the desire to survive. Initially, I think all the audience bet on a young and strong Rob than on a decrepit cuckold, but every minute the character of Hopkins transformed, as if he spread his wings in an unusual environment for him, having the opportunity to show his strength of spirit in all its glory! What about handsome Rob? His hero cringed and deflated like a burst ball, after the slightest failure, he again panicked and showed the audience himself for what he is - a dummy disguised under an attractive appearance and bullying behavior. That's what natural selection is!
Many think noted the beauty of this film, the harsh northern landscapes, excellent camera work, panoramic plans were breathtaking. The scenes with the bear were filmed just on an unreal level, I was throwing, screaming, clenching my fists for the heroes, choking with horror, oh, this suspense, this tension reigned in the film, there is something that young directors learn! I had great respect for both Hopkins and Baldwin, who definitely played his best role. Dream in the same frame with a real bear, even trained - you need to have great courage!!! It is not hysterical for you to squeal against a green background, on which later monsters or a tiger will be inflicted with computer graphics.
As a result, recommend this film to your friends and acquaintances, they will thank you. Watch a good movie!
The basic morality of the painting is clear. This film is not about the survival of the three main characters in incredible conditions, but rather in a harsher but realistic reflection of real life. A life in which we often have to deal and depend on people we hate and dislike. As if reflecting this on the example of the two main characters who, being the worst enemies, were forced to unite in order to survive. This is what lifts the curtain of the modern world, in which it is not always clear who is your enemy, who is your friend and how much the state of affairs can change due to the confluence of certain circumstances.
The creators of the picture wrote a really strong and fascinating story, which they developed much further than a socially significant topic and gave the opportunity once again to make sure that sometimes we simply do not realize all our potential and all our capabilities. Since it is only when we find ourselves in incredible conditions and sometimes even life-threatening conditions that we understand what we can do and what we can do to survive. For if heroes wake up in some, then in others they are even more terrible scoundrels than they were before. All this is very famously unfolding around another confrontation between man and the forces of nature for the right of domination, which was so loved by filmmakers of the last century.
For the first time in my memory, the director of the picture Lee Tamahori made a really strong film, which does not make sense to scold in the unevenness of the narrative, the lack of dynamics and the harmonious connection between visual entertainment and storytelling. Because in this picture with all this and everything else is fine. The film is fascinating and watching the adventures of the main characters is incredibly interesting. Naturally, simultaneously evaluating and luxurious forest landscapes, which make even more strongly imbued with what is happening on the screen.
Amazingly coped with his task and luxurious acting duet in the person of Sir Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin, who, if not played the best roles in their career in this film, then one of the best for sure. The characters themselves are not trivial and insanely interesting, and the play of the actors allows you to be even more imbued with the inexplicable relationship between friendship and hatred. Of course good and bear Bart, who brought the picture an element of tension and as if became the personification of the forces of nature in this tape. Thus, sharpening the plot around another confrontation between man and nature for the right of domination.

On the edge - a rare example of a very fascinating, interesting, dynamic, meaningful and really strong adventure thriller, which makes its way to the depths of the soul and to break away from which when watching is simply impossible.
Is the price of our lives high? Are there any lines of fate that can change everything? Are we prepared for unforeseen situations that can decide the outcome of our lives and our future? It is worth remembering that these possibilities are not durable, and as soon as we enter into an unequal battle with death, fortune will immediately turn away from us, because you will not stand on your feet for too long and in wild despair fall to the ground and beg for mercy. But death does not forgive, it takes away from you all the most precious things that you had before, without clarifying the circumstances. It is not enough to say that we need to take care of ourselves and beware of dangerous cases, we also need to be prepared for the fact that this dark patroness will arrange a test for survival somewhere in the mountains or in a cold desert area with an empty stomach and in a weak state. But, in fact, do we not face such a sad fate in the future?
The answer to this question I saw in this picture of Lee Tamahori. As it turned out, the test that caught the main characters was waiting for them at the most inopportune moment of a normal helicopter flight, but a malfunction occurred and a crash occurred. The pilot and passengers inside the aircraft were killed, but three survived. They found themselves in a wooded area, fenced by huge pillars of trees and high hills, and even a river with a failed road not far away. Maybe this is where they will die. But, fortunately, no one is going to die and flew here not for the sake of unnecessary sacrifices and losses - now comes the time when you not only need to save and save the rest, but also prepare for the unexpected turns of the upcoming trip home. Another terrible danger threatens their lives - a huge North American bear, as hungry as they are, but strong and fiercely inclined to any action that rescued him in the search for human flesh. In the film, it is not the heroes who save themselves, but the desire to survive saves them, because now everything depends only on their ability to meet danger in different situations.
Actors Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin, who played the main roles in this film, play enemies and two opponents who are waiting for the same test, but for some of them this fight will seem the last, and someone will fight to the end just to survive. Disputers on the screen, they talk about different topics and hate each other for this common dislike, no matter how much they want to settle it correctly. In the end, they will come to unite their efforts to go further and this time it is not the heroes who will decide who is right and who is to blame, but the temperature in this area, the dangerous beast and anger in their hearts, are responsible for this.
The performance impressed me, there is no need to supplement my words.
The story itself, which occurred in the picture, reminded me of the question phrase often mentioned in many printed works and movies: “What if?”. That’s how their lives changed if they landed normally, there would be no accident, and would return back to the warm resort wooden houses where friends are waiting for them, what would happen if this disaster did not happen in one ordinary day? Has anything been resolved without the involvement of a man-made accident and physical pain? I saw here not only the struggle with death, but also the deathly despair itself, the very main image that stems from the above question: “What if?” Nothing would have changed, unfortunately. And the line of fate sometimes passes by you and leaves you at a crossroads, as if abandoned, and then think much worse, because there is nowhere worse.
A wonderful film about a deadly threat in difficult and difficult conditions of survival.

This painting by Li Tamahori was crowned with unambiguous success. We can even say that it was with “On the Edge” that the director’s career began in terms of further successful promotion. After this film, he tried to shoot better and better, and in different genres. Almost every movie he made was a hurrah and in any case some of these pictures fell in love with people and remained in their memory. But as for this work, the following is obvious: many have it in the collection as one of the favorites and best; perhaps it is not the pinnacle of all the beauty of the films shot by this director, but it is a memorable and high-class movie on the theme of survival; well, the fact that “On the Edge” quite safely can be attributed to the classics as an adventure thriller and an excellent drama.
Thank you very much for the excellent and very natural play of the actors. They just loud applause and shouts in a positive version - Bravo! The most surprising thing is that almost throughout the film there were only two. It was Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin who had enough. They were able to do everything so that you can be satisfied not only with them, but also with everything that happens in the course of the plot.
- Why isn't a rabbit afraid?
- Because he's smarter than a panther.
Let’s start with Anthony Hopkins as a billionaire named Charles Morse. Playing a rich, intelligent and brave man, in general an outstanding personality, he showed himself perfectly. Thanks to his erudition, knowledge, skills and ingenuity, a group of people who went in search of the best shots for the camera feel fine. With such a knowledgeable person, they will always be safe. All of Charles’ actions are brilliant and carefully considered, and those who did not listen to his advice get into trouble. For all the complexity and seriousness of the situation, the character of Hopkins kept his calm and held everything in his hands, controlled every step. What was still incredibly pleased was his nobility and kindness, which he showed in certain episodes of the picture. I was completely and completely satisfied with his excellent performance.
Alec Baldwin's performance as professional photographer Robert Greene was also good enough. Every photographer has certain preferences. And Robert has that, too. He skillfully convinces that the place where they fly is perfect for filming. But the photographer does not suspect how everything can accidentally change for the better and that they will end up in the forest, where they will have to survive. Baldwin was good at everything. There was love, friendship and betrayal, joy and sorrow, hypocrisy and reverence. It's all played up. It was a pleasure to watch him.
And just a little bit about the bear Bart, who was really big and malicious grizzly, thirsty for blood. In addition to his crushing power and animal instinct, he was also quite cunning. You see it in almost every scene as soon as it appears. In addition, he quickly and easily navigated, deftly avoided the trap. In principle, this is quite characteristic of the forest dweller. Well done bear, 10 points!
I almost forgot... The film captures amazing landscapes, the beauty of nature. All the aesthetes will love it.
The result: a good movie, a wonderful cast, brilliant work of the creators and developers of the picture. Thank you to all the people who participated in this project.
- We all get tested, but they don’t always come in the form we prefer. Isn't that right?
Naturally, I appreciate high, less and the hand will not rise. So ...
You can't say much about a movie like that. You just have to watch. I didn’t write a review of Mind Games for the same reason: no matter how much you write, it won’t make sense. Books, for example, can be written a lot and beautifully. And that’s not about all books – there are those that you need to pick up yourself, read and independently draw conclusions, leaving something in your head for further reflection. It’s amazing how good a movie can be when there are only two actors in the picture. Well, the third one is a character, not an actor - the wildlife of Alaska, in fact (oh, there are such beautiful snow-capped mountains... it seems that another item has been added to my list of "I want to get into..."). Perhaps the same central person as the heroes of Hopkins and Baldwin.
If I were asked to describe the film in one word, I would say it was real. Not because it’s a little bit like Jack London – people in such conditions sooner or later reveal their true identity, and it becomes clear who is a person and who is not quite a person. Because there’s nothing in the movie that’s far-fetched. There is no hollow, brilliant romance that almost everyone is surrounded by millionaires and photographers. The fact that the vast majority of directors did not bother to study the lives of two groups of these people is hard to believe ... well, we do not judge them.
The character of Hopkins is one of the first American millionaires, a generation of self-made men, who are burdened by the world of girls and champagne (although they have to rotate in it), because they are people of a different kind. I do not know why they are described in literature and cinema in the same way as modern millionaires. It was doubly pleasant to see a good acting in this case: here the millionaire is first of all an intelligent and cautious businessman who knows how to keep himself and knows his worth.
Baldwin’s character is also not the sweet vanilla that photographers often portray, nor an inspired creator who does not walk on the ground, but flies through the air, but a real commercial photographer: he is interested in money, money and nothing but money. Well, glory. In fact, that made him who he is today. A little jealousy, a little misunderstanding of what is happening in a foreign world and a young wife of a millionaire. A little envy, misunderstanding of what is happening in a foreign world (and, accordingly, the subconscious desire to idealize it, this world), a little jealousy (who knows, maybe not accidental). What else is needed to create a plot? A mere trifle: a millionaire and a photographer by chance are cut off from civilization without much hope that someone will find them and save them.
One of those films that leaves a heavy, but at the same time pleasant impression. The opportunity to rethink the importance of accepting others, even if they are very different from you and even if they have hurt you. We often joke about who would you take to a desert island? Who would you take if you went to the mountains or the wild taiga? You watch movies like this and you think, I wonder how people who call themselves your friends would act in this situation. In short, the movie is partly about the fact that there is no black and white, and that each person is a set of strengths and weaknesses. Someone is able to show strong qualities in a certain situation, and someone gives up. And you don't have to go to Alaska to find out, do you?
Many people, wanting to be closer to nature, and find out what they are really worth, go on long hikes. Few come back. Some choose to prefer civilization to unity with nature, but most simply die trying to find themselves. There are many reasons for this – lack of food, hungry animals, an unsuccessful fall from a great height or shame. Today’s film is about people who got lost in the wilds of Alaska and faced all these misfortunes at once. So this is "On the Edge."
As a result of the accident, the plane on board which was billionaire Charles Morse, crashes. The pilot dies, but Charles and his two companions, photographer Robert Greene and his assistant Stephan, survive. And now the three heroes far from civilization must not fall into the clutches of an aggressive bear, and also find a way to send a distress signal. It's not an enviable fate.
Anthony Hopkins played the charming millionaire Charles Morse. Hopkins has once again proved that he is able to play diverse characters, while forcing the audience to empathize with his character. A talented man, yes. So, Charles Morse is a man with a rich baggage of knowledge, which he learned from books, he has a beautiful wife, which he dreamed of all his life, a huge fortune, as well as loneliness. How can someone who is always in the spotlight be lonely? Very simple. Charles doesn’t know if people talk to him for money or because he’s an interesting and boring conversationalist. The only person an elderly millionaire can call his friend wishes him a speedy death. His name is Robert Greene.
So Robert Greene played by Alec Baldwin. Baldwin is also a wonderful actor, who is great, it turns out, to play both dramatic roles and the roles of scoundrels. In the same film, Alec combines both of these roles and it turns out that he is just wonderful. Robert Greene does not have a wealth of knowledge, but he compensates for this lack of natural strength and charisma. He is in love with Morse’s wife, he dreams of his wealth, and of course he wants to kill the moneybag that is Charles Morse. However, Robert's plans change dramatically when a huge bear begins to chase the survivors. It's not the same as the old ones.
And now the third hero of the story and no, this is not an African-American Stephen, this is a big brown bear whose favorite hobby is to eat a human. Bear is also a famous actor, not a set of expensive special effects, as it has become fashionable recently. So Mikhail Potapich is perceived in the film as a natural disaster that does not give the characters even a few minutes of rest, following the latter on their heels. And looking at this monster, you understand that once in the forest, first of all, you should not be afraid of a pack of wolves, but a bear capable of hitting a person with one left.
The atmosphere of the film keeps the viewer in suspense from the first to the last frame, and no small role in this contributed to the excellent musical accompaniment, which for a long time cuts into memory.
The camera work is just as beautiful and this applies to both the demonstration of the actors of the picture and the beautiful landscapes of snow-covered Alaska. That's the kind of cameraman in every movie. Oh, dream dreams.
Summing up, I want to say that before us there is a tense thriller, telling about friendship, love, devotion, hope for a better tomorrow, and of course – survival. There are both beautiful dialogues that you can safely drag on quotes, and an excellent cast that will not let you get bored, and snowy landscapes will please any connoisseur of beauty. And if you haven’t seen this movie yet, I highly recommend correcting this unfortunate omission. You won't regret it.
