The story of revenge I was interested in Rex Harrison as an antagonist villain. Having studied the cruel plot, I was surprised that the tape was shot based on the novel by Mario Puzo.
The plot formally resembles a Western. The criminals killed the wife of the main character, and he accidentally survived. Now it is like a ghost returns and seeks the life of each of the scoundrels. Now they pretend to be decent, respected people. And their leader is eager to make a political career. The authorities know about his crimes, but nevertheless they support him.
There is nothing new for a western in this layout. But Puzo adds one detail: war crimes and former Nazis. So we come to an unusual situation for cinema: the authorities are trying to protect a former Nazi criminal.
With such introductory tape, it was destined to be a masterpiece for centuries. Moreover, Rex Harrison agreed to play the main villain. It was just a matter of small. But... I didn’t see the design on one of the significant elements.
Unexpressive performer of the main role. The lack of detailed female images - there are no reminders of the deceased spouse, nor the disclosure of the motivation of the new girlfriend of the hero. We only know that she is a prostitute. But what drives her? Why does she prefer a legally questionable punitive operation to big money? Puzo's book had more than convincing answers. And they were not in the tape.
And the acts of revenge themselves. In the book, the hero revelled in them. Each action was a kind of “revenge” of the cruel phantasmagoria that the fascists had arranged with him many years earlier. But in the tape all this cruelty is smoothed out. And if so, a significant part of the author's controversy is lost. Why is he taking revenge?
From here we get a completely inexpressive portrait of the main character. It's like he lives on impulse... In addition, the actor for his role was selected very average.
Much is determined by the scenes, the choice of plans. However, the predominantly dark tones do not make this film a contrastingly expressive semblance of noir. Before us is only a picture of revenge executed in gloomy tones.
As a result, the second half of the tape lasts a long time. Events occur unexpectedly, but without any consistency. Therefore, when the film "whistles" to the finale, before the credits - the most expressive and tense nominally moment slips. Stop. Cut. The director notified us of the end of the film. Thank you for that. And the viewer is better to watch a really good movie on a given topic. I would recommend "Confrontation" Aranovich.
