Paradise Island was not a paradise at all. Actually, the film is called well in a completely different way, namely, “Sanam”, after the name of the main character (Manisha Koiral). Why our translators called this picture not in the subject, I did not understand. This film caught me by chance under the mood, I think, let me see something from the old, from my youth, and then I came across it, long ago I have a computer hanging around. The film is not bad for those years, but there is a lot of patriotism. I do not like this in principle (not patriotism, but this pathosity), and the main character here pumped up a little, in general, the whole road looked only at Manisha and her song numbers.
The plot of the film is simple, but very cute, about the love of the village simpleton Sanam to military captain Gaurav. A military regiment has arrived to conduct some sort of secret operation on an island that is home to either a tribe or a community that does not like strangers at all. The military has information that terrorists operate there and store weapons on the island, for subsequent resale in India. Sanam falls in love with Gaurava, but he neither moans nor calves, in general does not react, although Sanam is beautiful. It should be noted that Manisha looks very good there, despite all her colorful clothes and false braids. By the way, she's very slim here. In The Indian in 1996 or, for example, in The Hidden Truth, Mystery in 1997, Manisha is far from thin. She’s getting better and better, I think. And here is such a beauty glued to the captain, by any means tries to fall in love with himself, and he does not. “You are a good girl, but my life is not mine.” I kept thinking – maybe he’s a super-secret agent working for the government, or sick of something, or, God forgive me, the wrong orientation, but no, it turns out, after his brother (Sanjay Dutt) died, he lost all the joy of life, and he can’t love. Well, it's not in any gate at all... What, would a brother mind Gaurav falling in love and starting a family? Some kind of left-wing excuse. Sanju Sunilic appears in the film for only 20 minutes. He plays Gaurav's older brother, who died saving a little girl. Gaurav's story about his brother brought the action a little more to life, especially his relationship with his father (Anupam Kher), and it was fun to watch them argue and play all the time (like little children). Sanjay sings one song, the most up-to-date song in the whole film - how he would get married but doesn't know who to choose - he loves everyone, everyone is good - and Shilpa, and Kajol, and Urmila, and all, all the actresses famous at the time (late 90s). So the intrigue of Gaurava’s inability to fall in love and marry was resolved by disappointment (at least for me personally). And in general, I did not like Vivek Mushran, I saw him in many films, but he is kind of indistinct. At that time he was similar to Aamir Khan, but, as they say, a weak similarity.
As always, there is a villain in this kind of movie. Here he is Gulshan Grover, a malicious terrorist and murderer. Although this is a melodrama, but without humor, there are a lot of funny moments. Well, as always, we were laughed at by our favorite comedians: Anupam Kher and Kader Khan. I loved the music, very melodic songs. Manisha performed one dance very well. Actually, she was good here. Personally, the film left a good impression. This is not a masterpiece, but you can see it.
