A blockbuster from Sunny Deol. Before this film, I had only known one film of the same name, one of the best films of 1981 by Amitabh Bachchan. And now I know that there is another film "Orphan" 1988, with a young and beautiful "Sunny Deol" in the title role. I was very interested in this story and decided to watch it. True, the film is still subtitled, but I am tired of waiting for his voiceover (whether it will ever be unknown), and I want to see the film. So the subtitles didn't bother me at all.
So far I have only seen three Hindi films that can be classified as pure western, and Orphan is one of them. Released in 1988, the film was far ahead of its time. Like other JP Dutta films, the cinema is first-class and can be recognized as the best in terms of filming. For me, it’s one of the best films I’ve ever seen in Sunny Deol’s career. It is sad that JP Dutta has not made such films for a long time.
Sunny Deol began his career with the blockbuster "The Power of Love" in 1983, followed by his next blockbuster "Arjun" in 1985, which finally defined him as an action hero. After these two blockbusters, there were a bunch of hits such as "Bandit", "Orphan", "Mighty", "Legend of Love", "Ocean", "Possession of the Sultan", which made him a real star. "Orphan" - one of his best films of the late 80s, this is the time when "Sunny Deol was still young, handsome, had an excellent figure and fought all the fans.
This film is a simple story about how an orphan, the son of a murdered bandit, was adopted by a police inspector, the one who killed the bandit. Having given him the name Krsna, he takes the boy into his house as his son, and the brother of his daughter, Gauri, who grows up without a mother from birth. However, the inspector's mother (grandmother Gauri) does not accept the boy, calling him a gangster offspring who has dirty blood. KrishnaGrows introverted and silent, and as a servant does all the housework. But he is immensely grateful to the inspector that he took him into his house, raised him, and even loves him in his own way. In addition, he has Gauri, who seems to be like his sister, but they love each other since childhood and do not consider each other brother and sister, but consider each other friends. The situation comes to a standstill, and the inspector decides to send Krishna to a police school to become a police inspector. For several years, friends are separated. When Krishna returns after his studies, he has become a tall and handsome guy (Sunni Deol) and Gauri has become a real beauty (Farha Naaz). They meet and there is true love between them. However, this is very disliked by the stepmother Gauri (during this time, her father managed to marry a second time), who is not much older than the lovers and has her own eyes on Krishna. And she begins to weave intrigues, in every possible way denigrating Krishna in the eyes of her father and trying to separate the lovers. And the father believes her, not his adopted son, as is often the case in Indian films. A discord arises between them. Krishna tries to prove to his father that he was slandered and not guilty of anything. How he does it and how he stops the villains is the heart of the story.
The film is actually good, but it's not a simple and original story of an orphan. Although I have seen this more than once in Indian cinema, (even Sunny has the film Blue River, with a similar story in many ways) and the whole set of standard villains here on the face, but still attracts. And he knows how to fight for his rights, which is also well shown in the film.
Directing JP Dutta is amazing, he handles many scenes properly and does a brilliant job. The films have always been original, they did not have a single copied plot with Hollywood nonsense. There are many scenes of action in the film, but not so many dialogues, which is pleasing, since watching the film with subtitles, while constantly reading the text at the bottom of the screen is not particularly interesting, you miss all the action that is happening at this time on the screen. And here I even liked, not so many subtitles and you can just enjoy watching, listening to the clean and familiar (and already so native) speech of the actors in Hindi.
Sunny Deol does a great job as an orphan who grew up in a police house. Farha Naaz looks simple and natural. Sujata Mehta (the same stepmother Gauri) is simply annoying. Kulbhushan Kharbandra is good, he looks very good in the form of a policeman, although his character was some kind of retarded, he reacted too sluggishly to everything that is happening. Amrish Puri and Danny Denzongpa - as always villains, and as always perfectly show their characters.
I loved the movie (despite the subtitles). Very organic looks pair Sunny and Farha. She is so fragile, tender, and he is strong and reliable, like the last of the Mohicans, which will protect her from any adversity. This is one of Sunny Deol's films of the late 80s, which is worth watching, since it not only has a good script, great acting, but also good directing.
Overall, a really good movie! Watch it if you are a fan of Sunny Deola, or you just like Hindi cinema of the 80s of the last century.
