One crazy day. Venezuelan director and screenwriter Sebastian Gutierrez in his author’s film “Women in Need”, apparently, decided to justify in the eyes of the public the profession of pornographic actress. Having gained willpower, he prepared a scenario quite similar to the female insinuations and their completely unconventional position in Pedro Almodóvar. But the talent of Gutierrez and the great Spanish director is not comparable. The Venezuelan only superficially touched the female essence, while Almodovar was always deeper and more truthful. In addition, Sebastian Gutierrez entered the river with a genre that Americans especially love, no, it’s not a Western, it’s a crime, however, convulsively trying to combine it with drama. Did it work? Not really.
The film "Women in Need" consists of several plot intertwined lines. First of all, there is a story about Electra Lux (Carla Gugino), the number one star of adult films. Suddenly, she discovers that she is pregnant, which could end her career. She is thinking about whether to leave the child and, thus, stop showing all her intimate charms or become a completely different woman, namely a mother. At this time, the child’s possible father, a musician of the famous band, dies in the toilet booth on the plane, having sex with one of the flight attendants. Two girls who are engaged in the oldest craft on earth, and they become witnesses to a possible murder. In memory immediately there is an association with “Bad guys”, but only in the plot, but not as a film, it is also incomparable as Sebastian Gutierrez and Almodovar, as mentioned above.
There is another storyline where a strange girl visits a therapist. By the way, the girl plays, apparently, the daughter of the director. Not to become and the level of the game does not allow her to count on anything more than participation in the filming of a second-rate movie of her father. She knows the skeleton in her named father's closet and talks about it. Then another, far from smooth transition, and there is a story of a woman who left her child in the care of her sister. Smooth, polished transitions in multi-story cinema are obtained only by Woody Allen and Richard Curtis, for others it is a difficult work. You can praise Sebastian Gutierrez that he was not afraid of this job, but on the other hand, you can be scolded for the fact that he got out of hand so badly. Decided Sebastian Gutierrez will swing at the “big”, and it turned out a caricature.
Based on the name, it is easy to understand that we will talk about the weak half of humanity and the main characters will be represented by them. I must say that not by the quality of the game, but by the difference of characters and rather alluring beauty, many of the actresses are remembered, this is probably the biggest plus of "Women in Need." In addition to Carla Gugino, it is worth noting Adrianne Paliki and Emmanuel Sriki. Their images were the most noticeable and left their mark on the overall picture. And then it becomes unsurprising that both actresses relocated after the continuation (though the question is: why was it necessary when collecting the first part less than twenty thousand dollars?) of the story about the porn star Elektra Lux and those who directly or indirectly depend on her. The men in the film are of little interest. Among them, it is worth noting that there were Simon Baker, a womanizer from Sex and 101 Deaths, Josh Brolin (the last known project of his “Gangster Hunters”), Xander Berkeley, one of the most remarkable supporting actors in Hollywood, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who decided that he is a big star today, hardly recognizes in this film. And of all these, Josh Brolin leaves at least some memory of himself, the rest are absolute zero.
If you have something to see at your leisure, then calmly skip this film. You won’t lose anything if you don’t watch it. If you suddenly want to see the bad plagiarism of Pedro Almodóvar, then try this dish to taste, only then do not shy, you were warned!
