Sex, cocaine, loneliness on the streets, in homes and clubs The Spanish-Portuguese debut drama of an unknown director, whose name I am stupidly unable to translate, tells the story of desperate youth from boredom. These guys and girls have nothing to lose. Left without parents, which in principle is out of the question, they are engaged in only one thing - the search for sex. They have forgotten pure love, loyalty, honesty—don’t expect any of the above. Kissing parties in the toilets, a handful of cocaine, a bit of prostitution, and lengthy dating issues -- that's their existence.
It's interesting to watch. From the point of view of the distant viewer. It’s like coming to the zoo when animals have a period of estrus, and for some reason all at once, and hatching eyes at mating antelopes, goats, camels ... I'm sorry, but you can't see lions or tigers here. Wrong contingent. Wrong reality. Only boring, hopeless, almost lost people who found themselves nowhere but the night streets.
Probably, looking at them, it is necessary to ascribe to the existing problems and situations a bunch of hidden, purely art-house meanings, and consider that he has comprehended the mystery of the universe, just see the life of some couple... But what if there is no complete story? If he eventually turns into an inept imitation of documentary, not carrying anything special?
During the session, you think that you could “stick” for another hour, because the characters are even attractive in some ways. Probably good in their unprincipled naturalness, lack of cinematic pretense. As they say, life as it is. A floor cloth with no sign of luxury. However, when the director finishes the story, you don’t regret saying goodbye to the void. Because he started out of nothing, he went nowhere, and he never came to anything. Yes, in the finale, something changes in the lives of the characters, it’s exciting. Maybe the hope, saving and late, which they made at night, finally came to the rescue, giving a little from the mystery of love? That's probably true. And yet, the proper effect does not occur at all. The director remained an inexperienced boy, burning ants with a magnifying glass, completely unaware of how to build them an anthill instead.
I can’t appreciate this work either well or poorly.
