Between worlds Director Ekrem Ergun tells the story of a teenager’s thirst for freedom. Dreams, after which you do not want to wake up, because in reality there is an awareness of the gravity of adult life. The horse stands in such stories for the pursuit of his own identity, she becomes the best psychologist for young girls who have conflicts caused by puberty. What she can’t tell her parents, she says to the horses. There is nothing pink here, and there is little sentimentality in their relationship. The action of the film is very stretched, which, in fact, is characteristic of German cinema. Actors don’t shout about their feelings, but through long dialogue, we can understand and carry through all the emotions of the characters.
After the death of her mother, 17-year-old Aileen lives as a father and younger brother. The teenager carries a heavy burden of household and brother responsibilities, and also has big problems with peer relationships at school. The film begins with a girl's dream: A dark forest road where she literally rides a horse. But before she knows where this path will take her, Eileen wakes up. The director actively uses the method of understatement, intellectual editing.
Hirdur (translated as a warrior) is the name of the horse that Aileen meets at community service after another fight at school. Hurdur is as lonely and private as Eileen. There is inevitably a parallel (parallel montage) – the two heroes are supposedly “between the worlds”. Aileen discovers true passion against all odds. Sitting on a horse, she regains self-confidence – her attitude to life changes, her purpose appears. Eileen is no longer afraid to wake up from her dream. But on the way to her dream, as a rule, there are always obstacles with which the heroine is ready to fight, because she has already realized that life has a bright side.
German cinema, as a rule, is filled with a special sensitivity to sincere relationships, and to speak about loneliness, you do not need high-profile events, a minimal household plot is enough, which proves this film. The whole film is built mainly on medium and close-up plans, everything is very natural, the music plays directly in the frame, sometimes it seems that the director does not even use staged light. Perhaps the film might seem boring and not of much interest, if not for the amazing performance of the actors: there is no banality. On the contrary, everything is very simple and therefore extremely reliable. The director tried to achieve naturalness in every minute of the film. It becomes clear that the director is more interested in the feelings and characters of the characters, rather than the visual side, although it certainly complements the overall picture. In the film there is a certain coldness, detachment. And this can be a discomfort for many viewers who are used to the "warm" movie. But with this technique, the director strives to ensure that no spark passes between the characters until a certain moment and that a certain tension does not decrease.
The director, in my opinion, was good at showing the problem of relationships, which is always very relevant. The film leaves behind a feeling of lightness and confidence in their abilities, which eventually gained the heroine, freed from constant fears and prohibitions.
