Similar to us. I don’t watch Eurovision and I didn’t know anything about the band’s existence until the film was screened as part of the Finnish Film Week festival.
"Pertti Kurikka's Nameday" is a punk band from Finland, consisting of 4 people and one administrator. They all suffer from diseases such as Down syndrome and autism. This team was selected for the “Eurovision” in 2015, but in the final it was not missed. In general, a natural decision, but the reaction of the participants - tears, disappointment - is perhaps the emotional culmination of the film.
These people live a full life, just like you and me – smoke, drink, swear, fall in love, get disappointed, suffer. And they play in a group that many people in the country know, which you can not say about us, “normal”.
In the film, you can see that society is making an effort to make it possible for these people not to feel "different," but in fact, they really need help - understanding, patience, support. They are vital.
There are some funny moments in the movie that make you smile. There is also a fierce thrash - Kari constantly swears in English, and before the final credits there is a recording of the performance at the farewell concert (Pertti decided to leave the group at 60 years old) - Kari goes on stage in underwear and one sock, and then remains completely in a sock.
What can I say? On the one hand, the problem of people with developmental disabilities is highlighted, on the other hand, not that by the participants of the team, but by the viewers who occasionally flash in the frame, it becomes clear what punk "culture" is.
I finally found out what Conchita Wurst is.
