-Vietnamese "Bridge to Terabitia"- I love Asian movies, mostly Korean. But this time I decided to give Vietnam a chance. And you didn't.
The film is based on the bestseller of the same name and collected a mountain of awards, including one special prize of the children's jury (category 11-13 years) in the nomination "for the best feature film" at the Toronto International Film Festival. The kids really loved this movie. And there's a reason.
Two brothers, one older and larger, a restless and insecure melancholic, the other younger and smaller, a lump of energy and optimism. And a little girl whose house burned down and has to move in for a while. The elder is in love with the girl, but she is more interested in playing with the younger (as he at least thinks). On the outskirts of the village there is a terrible withered tree, next to which an evil ghost lives, in the forest there is an enchanted Princess, in the school there is a fat hooligan, in the neighborhood a one-armed romantic passes notes to a local girl, and her evil father follows them both, in the yard there is an incredible magical frog, and also the rainy season is coming, which will bring floods, hunger and disease.
The film has some stunning, almost textbook scenes that are remembered for life, the incredible play of small actors, as well as light humor and unexpected twists. At the end, there is a slightly uneven finale (the film would not hurt to be 20 minutes longer, otherwise too many grand pianos in the bushes in a row climb out on the line not the most important for the rest of the plot), and a hopeful epilogue scene for which you forgive all small flaws.
“To Kill a Mockingbird”, “Beyond the hedge”, “Big Fish” and even “Tideland” – a lot of memories pop up in my head when watching this film. If you want something good, bright, life-affirming and do not be afraid to read the subtitles (the translation is only amateur, and it is terrible), then this film is for you. You can watch alone, and in the company, and with parents, and with children, and with a loved one - a real Vietnamese classic.
