Very good series, I love such, past centuries .Such series show good manners, More of them, they teach a lot: manners, the ability to dress , or the screens are only detectives, I love detectives, but tired of murder
This film shows a few days in the life of the Grantham family and their close associates, well depicted in the series of the same name (2010-2015). In fact, I watched this movie afterward. I won’t say that I became a fan of the series, but the first two seasons were very good, then downhill (as often happens with TV shows). The series tells the story of the inhabitants of Downton Abbey from 1912 to 1926. Here I want to add a little clarification about the word “abbey” (it made me postpone the viewing endlessly, because it seemed that the film was about priests or inhabitants of the monastery). However, having already started browsing, and finding that this was not the case, I started looking for information. It turns out that at the time of Henry 8, when Protestantism was declared in Britain, everything related to Catholicism was either destroyed or distributed to noble aristocrats (if the characters of the film were named Downton, this would mean that their ancestors were personally acquainted with Henry 8). But I got distracted. I found the film a bit boring. I kept catching myself thinking how people who haven't watched the show feel. I think he left them indifferent. The film is made for big fans of the series and it’s sad. A lot of attention is paid to the adventures of minor characters (for example, Thomas and Daisy), whereas in the series they were cross-cutting characters - their personal lives remained off-screen. Probably, the writers had to sweat to reproduce a little interesting short (by the standards of the series) story within the given framework. But was it worth it? .
British costume film 'Downton Abbey' exclusively for those who love and know the series itself. Like the series ' Downton Abbey' to me; just amazing, and I love it. That is why you start watching this film with great anticipation and pleasure.
Nostalgia for the series and the participation of all actors does a huge job, so this movie and comes to a positive assessment. In our Russian box office, the film somehow stayed away and is not very noticeable. Abroad, the picture, the application of the series, which was transferred to the film, turned out to be very beloved and successful. The film was warmly received by both viewers and critics.
But, of course, if you have not watched the series, then you will not understand the movie. To appreciate all its charm, charm, charm, all the nuances, you first need to immerse yourself in the series, because it is the main dish, well, for dessert this film continues.
It is the dream of any aristocrat to have a monarch at home. That's what's happening at Downton Abbey. 1927. In the apartment of the Crowley family comes George V with his wife. A large family, along with faithful servants, are preparing to receive the Sovereign in the Abbey, but no one yet knows that members of the Crowley family will take a direct part in the fate of the monarch, or rather his life. . .
': A person does not get many chances in life, and if they are missed, they may never come back.' (c) Violet Crowley Dowager Countess.
I loved this movie, but it's really like dessert, not the main dish. The picture is certainly large-scale, and it is felt when viewing. It was great to have all the actors back and everyone was happy to see them. I wanted something else from this movie. It is painfully fleeting, and two hours flew by like a moment.
I am sure that this movie should go more in time. It didn’t take a couple of scenes, it seemed that something was cut or not filmed.
Dresses, costumes, scenery, entourage in the background: all this is at the highest level. These important little things make the film beautiful, charming, with a certain charm. The era of that time, namely the British aristocracy, is shown accurately, and you can not stick to anything.
Still, in the center of the plot pulsates Mary, who is famously played by Michelle Dockery and, of course, Tom, played by Allen Lynch. Maggie Smith again has the best and crown phrases, and the iconic actress was delighted to see on screen again. I don't know how she does it, but Smith is a living legend. In the series, she was amazing, and the role of the Dowager Duchess went so perfectly. In the film, for the first time, we felt her advanced age, because the actress’ eyes were roaring, which was awkward to watch. Old age is terrible and it awaits us all.
- Hello, Edith, dear.
- Hello, Grandma. It's so exciting, isn't it?
- At my age, anxiety should be dosed.
Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, Joanne Froggatt and Brenda Coyle showed us little in the film. Their screen time was limited, and it was a shame. I wanted more scenes with him. But Laura Carmichael and Robert James-Collier were given a significant place in the film. The heroine of Edith performed by Laura Carmichael has blossomed and she is beautiful. It was nice to see the evolution of this character: how she was in the first series of the first season of the series, and how she became in the film – super.
The character of Thomas played by Robert James-Collier has always stood out from all heroes. It's also character evolution. Dislike can make a person angry and cold, but everything can change if a person is surrounded by good people, and he will absorb good from them like a sponge. This hero changes, but over time fate rewards him with an interesting acquaintance. Thomas got a lot of attention here.
The film directed by Michael Engler based on the script by Julian Fellowes returns to the beloved abbey to the already beloved heroes. The picture is warm and sophisticated, elegant and nostalgic. Of course, the series is a hundred times better: it is in it all the power and charm, but it is still nice that this story was transferred from television to the movies, and it is fun. True fans of the series will definitely appreciate this continuation film.
'Downton Abbey' is the sequel to the famous 2019 series. The result, dramatic melodrama due to a number of reasons looks willing and happy. I have a positive attitude towards the film, and if suddenly they dare to make another film, I will watch it with great pleasure. Thanks. . .

Excellent and very atmospheric series! It feels like you live there too! What's wrong is the topic of same-sex relationships, without this note, the series would not lose anything.
Writing about the full-length Downton Abbey is pretty pointless. Firstly, if you haven’t seen the original series, everything that happens on the screen will seem completely ridiculous. Secondly, the film is clearly aimed at fans of the series, this is its direct continuation, and all fans will go to it. In other words, you can draw a predetermining line: if you watched the series to the end and were delighted or in its intermediate stage, then you should definitely buy a ticket and go to the movies. If you watched the series briefly or did not watch at all, then buying a ticket will be a waste of both money and time. Despite the limited release (only about 200 copies), the film can be seen in the original with subtitles, and watching “Downton Abbey” in dubbing is like watching “Avatar” with your eyes closed. It seems to be clear, but it is useless.
After watching the sinking of the Titanic, public protests for women’s rights, formalities in the transfer of inheritance rights and, of course, having listened to the verbal debate between the Dowager Countess Grantham and Isabelle, one can speak without fear and even discuss the film in advance. There will be no unexpected story changes, and the action will still revolve around the Grantham family. Only from a different angle.
The only correct solution is to talk about Downton Abbey in terms of cultural and socio-political phenomena. The series, invented by writer and screenwriter Julian Fellowes, ended with a traditional Christmas episode in December 2015. Talks about a full-length sequel began in 2016, which became a turning point for modern Britain: slightly more than half of citizens voted for the country’s exit from the European Union. Fellowes celebrates the British aristocracy not only out of anthropological interest - he himself is one of its representatives and, for example, bears the title of baron of the village of West Stafford in Dorset. Fellowes is a supporter of the Tory Party and has been in the House of Lords since 2011 (he has been appointed by David Cameron, who has been cited as one of the main culprits in the current political chaos). Currently, the screenwriter lives with his wife on the estate, he owns a plot of more than 200 thousand square meters. meters. Although Downton Abbey had, for example, progressive arguments about the status of women, the main series always held conservative views: the monarchy is the basis of all England, without it the country would perish, in the era of complete independence was better. Many of the characters in the show were more or less sympathetic to socialism, but always abandoned these ideas (if they survived). In the first season, Tom Branson, an Irishman who got a driver in Downton, appears as a fiery revolutionary. In six seasons, he not only becomes a full member of the Crowley family, but also completely changes his views.
Outside the homeland, the series is perceived much more relaxed. It is much easier for the Russian viewer to enjoy the magnificent Anglophile trinket - in this he is close to the Americans who look at Downton as an outlandish tape about stiff aristocrats with strange habits. In doing so, we have the opportunity, like Ted from the sitcom How I Met Your Mother, not to focus on the political aspect of the show, but simply to watch "Lady Stoutshire hurt her knee while playing croquet and the cook Mrs. Butbrash can't find enough chestnuts for a goose on St. Crispin's Day." You should use it.
If Hemingway’s formula about the “Feast that is always with you” is transferred not only to life, but also to art, then there are things that always gave happiness to a person, to return to which it is especially pleasant. “Downton Abbey” is such a thing, its world is a time and place where you always want to return, and returning invariably brings positive emotions. And I hope that the creators will treat us more than once with such continuations of the original story.
It's 1927 now. The world continues to change rapidly, but the British aristocracy still holds the stamp. The plot is set on the visit of King George V and his wife Mary to Downton. The hosts are concerned to organize the most decent reception, the servants fight for their independence and with all their might restrain the onslaught of stiff royal servants, outshine their powerful masters in terms of pathos. And there is a side motive - the preparation of an assassination attempt on the king. In a word, a glorious tie.
- We were walking on the lawn. What do you see there?
- The Queen's Parade is being built.
- Oh, how exciting.
- They're throwing money away.
- Here we go. . .
- Is this not the role of the monarchy? To illuminate the lives of people with greatness and radiance.
Screenwriter Julian Fellowes, obviously selflessly in love with his characters, manages to give important and significant parts to almost all the main characters in two hours of screen time, develop their stories, deepen characters, outline future moves and turns. Jewelry work!
Again beautiful, again excited heart, again a lot of funny, again stunning Maggie Smith, again amazing dialogue, picking on words, worthy of battle on swords, again official, noble and spirit-lifting.
Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.
Actors are usually brilliant. Of the newcomers, Imelda Staunton was pleased with her appearance, known for her role as the disgusting Dolores Ambridge in Harry Potter. Although here at first it was difficult to accept her character, with the decision of which was associated almost the main intrigue of the film, but she joined successfully.
There is no maximum estimate just because the effect of novelty has disappeared. But otherwise, Downton Abbey remains a drug - from the first frames, from the first sounds of a familiar melody, everything inside stops, trembles, shudders in anticipation. And the viewer won't be fooled. He gets his dose of high and delight. And waiting for more.

If you’ve seen the show, the hosts are your old friends. You will be happy to communicate with them, everyone will tell you some news, you will be happy for someone, you worry for someone. Well, you will attend a luxurious reception, admiring the brilliant life of your friends.
If you did not watch the series, then you were there by accident and see all the participants for the first time. Of course, they will talk to you, but you are unlikely to be interested in their family vicissitudes - you have no idea who they are. Most likely, admire the beauty of the house, enjoy the atmosphere of old England, and all that.
The film does not introduce the viewer to the background of the family in question, and, obviously, is designed exclusively for fans of the series.
The film’s story is essentially missing. Everything revolves around the arrival at the estate of the royal couple – a big, but not vital event. And surrounded by this event small, completely insignificant details that do not touch (yes, only at the end you will get news that can make you worry).
Of course, the traditional attention to detail, the unique atmosphere of the series, the luxurious video series – this is all available. Without it, Downton would not be Downton.
Why it was necessary to make a full meter is unclear. This story would be perfect for the average Christmas series.
The gay club scene was very upsetting. The straight serve upset even more. I wanted to leave it negative.
But out of respect for the series itself, it’s neutral.
In our time, against the background of horror films, overpopulated corpses, template blockbusters and frightening phantasmagoria, you will rarely find on the screen a convincing and fascinating story about the competition for the true nobility of human souls.
Cinema saga with numerous glorious heroes and irreplaceable characters (what only worth the cinema image of the tireless cook - a storehouse of folk wisdom and inexhaustible kindness!).
In the picture, sharp English humor, generously scattered in creative dialogues; beautiful music and colorful landscapes of foggy Albion, Scotland with their ancient majestic castles; carefully thought-out cotuming of the early 20th century - all this creates a special illusion of the viewer's involvement in what is happening on the screen.
The actors demonstrate a deep penetration into the characters of their heroes. These are live people you’re looking forward to meeting with growing impatiently from series to series throughout the six seasons!
An important fact is that this series, full of fascinating events and unexpected collisions, in artistic form gives a fairly exhaustive idea of England of the 10-30s of the last century.
Family viewing is definitely recommended.
Perhaps someone will consider this review a spoiler. But I would be grateful to anyone who warned me.
I haven't seen the series.
The film is very high quality and atmospheric, as I like. Decent acting, ironic plot, beautiful costumes and furnishings.
But lately, I often notice that the higher the quality of the film, the more carefully it presents these modern & #39; Western & #39; values.
Firstly, the storyline with the gay club and the relationship caused me personally disgust, I just did not expect such a turn, nothing foreshadowed that now I will have to see it.
Secondly, very subtle and unobtrusive, I would say, spiritually, the ideas of feminism are presented.
The men in the film are basically just moving around and making the speeches their women expect them to make. Not always meeting expectations. All decisions are up to women. Mary is in charge of the entire abbey. Inheritance decisions are up to matrons. Even if the future father will go on a trip with the prince, it is not the hero himself or even the king who decides, but again women. In general, and in all intrigues of servants, women also play a leading role.
Again, the film is very nice to watch, and it is furnished just gorgeous. But the brain does not turn off, it still analyzes information.
Maybe someone will say that I didn’t watch the show and the movie just pays tribute to its spirit. I could say the same thing about the show.
I am an ordinary man in the street, I am interested in seeing the problems of traditional couples on the screen. And as a woman, I like to see strong-willed men taking responsibility for themselves.
Unfortunately, lately, cinema has been trying hard to convince me that I am in the minority.
The series Downton Abbey' at one time fascinated me with its depiction of an era, people’s lives and historicity. I knew there were plans to make a prequel, or sequel, of the series. However, Julian Fellowes presents to our attention a full-length film telling us another story of the heroes we love. I had the chance to watch the movie in the original with subtitles. The hall was full then. . .
1927. The formal and measured life of the Crowley family and domestic servants is suddenly turned upside down by one event: King George V himself and Queen Mary should arrive on a visit to Downton. No one wants to face His Majesty, so all the inhabitants of Downton begin to prepare for the meeting, which gives rise to even more unusual situations: from cleaning silver and buying food to arrogant royal servants and a possible assassination attempt on the king. . .
That’s why I liked the film so much – it preserves the spirit of our beloved costume historical drama. It feels like we haven't had those three years - we're going back to Doughton, where everything goes its own way. But the arrival of the ruling monarch in the ancestral nest of the eminent family is an incredibly great honor for everyone. This will be even more exciting than the usual series. But it still feels the same calmness, the same dimension and the spirit of the traditions of England, where the characters dress up for dinner, decide on the management of the estate, and even in verbal battles always remain emphatically polite.
But still, the main thing in the film was a meeting with the beloved heroes, who, although they remained the same as then, but now face new problems and are preparing to make many important decisions: Robert and Cora Crowley (Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern), the Earl and Countess Grantham are preparing to take the royal couple at the highest level; Lady Mary Talbot (Michel Dockery) continues to manage Downton, but increasingly thinks about his future and her role in it; Lady Edith McGovern she is happy to give birth. Tom Branson (Allen Leach), who, due to his revolutionary past, is not easy to accept the news of the royal visit, but subsequently makes many interesting acquaintances; Violet Crowley (Maggie Smith), the Dowager Countess of Grantham, still makes all sorts of plans and machinations, not ceasing to conduct verbal duels with his cousin and close friend Isobel (Penelope Wilton).
Downton's staff are just as excited about the royal visit, but it's also important for them to do their job to glorify Downton. All cope in different ways with very interesting consequences: retired butler Mr. Carson (Jim Carter), specially invited for such an event, together with the wife of Mrs. Hughes (Phillies Logan) are forced to fight with royal servants for the right to do their work; Anna and John Bates (Joan Froggatt and Brandon Coyle) think out a plan to fight arrogant servants; Mr. Barrow (Rob James-Collier) unexpectedly finds a lot of adventures and new friends for herself; Mrs. Patmore's cook (Lesley Nicol) is very worried about cooking dinner, as well as Daisy (Sophie Maksher), who expresses republican ideas and postpones wedding with a lackey Andy, and finally becomes the main star of the film.
Among the new heroes are the monarchs themselves - King George V and Maria Tekskaya (Simon Jones and Geraldine James), their daughter Princess Mary (Kate Phillips), whose relationship problems concern the whole family; Lady Maud Bagshaw (Imelda Staunton) the queen's maid and a distant relative of Crowley, who is not in the best relationship with them; her sweet and modest maid Lucy Smith (Tuppens Middleton"), who makes friends with Tom Brawley.
Still, it was very nice to return to Downton Abbey for a while, to dive back into that era, to see the beloved heroes and learn how they live. I really enjoyed the film and I sincerely hope that we will return to Downton Abbey again – probably at another time, and it will certainly be exciting!

Don't swear, just not my movie! I am not going to scold him, but he is definitely for lovers of Magnificent Ages) and other similar paintings. I didn’t want to, but I had so many expectations.
We waited so long for him, we waited for him to meet our favorite heroes - how sad we were to part with them at the end of the last season! And here they are again, almost family, Cora and Vilet, Mary and Tom, Anna and Thomas, all-all-all heroes back with us! Everyone is alive and well, everything is working out for everyone, and we were finally able to see the completion of some storylines.
Again, everything is like a Christmas fairy tale: beautiful, aristocratic, exquisite. And it does not matter that there is practically no plot and conflict in the film - all who once fell in love with the Crowley family is enough to "see" their old acquaintances, worry with Mary that she does not have money to repair the roof of the abbey, with Edith - that her ballroom dress "swimmed" to America, to be happy for Tom that he has had changes in his personal life, to worry about Vilet's health.
But this is for those who were waiting to meet the heroes of the series.
What about those who are not familiar with the series? I'm afraid it will be a complete fiasco.
The authors of the film do not waste time on acquaintance with the characters, on the intricacies of their fates. Most likely, the characters of the film for new viewers will remain cold English aristocrats, nothing like these viewers. Having missed the whole movie, it is unlikely that they will return to watching the series without knowing why Daisy’s wedding is so important to us, what Edith misses, why Mary runs the entire Abbey – and much, much more, for which we all love this series.
To be honest, the full-length film resembles one of the many episodes of six seasons, not the most important, not the most important, it is unclear why brought to the big screen. But the very message of the film is so reminiscent of the Christmas episodes of previous seasons that now is the time to immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere reigning in the ancient English castle, to observe the preparations for the arrival of high figures.
The full-length film risks remaining a one-off film for fans of the series, nothing particularly outstanding, except that we can thoroughly study all the wrinkles on the faces of the ladies.
However, those who missed the heroes of Downton Abbey – feel free to go to the cinemas! You will spend an unforgettable evening in the company of old acquaintances, pleasant enough that you will not want to part again and you will remember all the events of their lives for a long time, even those distant ones, about which the new film is not mentioned.
Even with this not the most successful sequel, “Downton Abbey” will remain a favorite series of a huge number of viewers.
This is a film about the high society of England, where everyone is happy to serve a thoroughbred aristocrat. Yes, this film celebrates the superiority of a person by birth, and how good it is to be a servant in an English home. For me, this movie was boring because there is no intrigue. The film consists only of conversations of aristocrats. It amazes the servant who sleeps and sees how not to fail and help their masters. Highlights - Violet Crowley (played by Maggie Smith) and Cora Crowley (played by Elizabeth McGovery) - just the thing that chatters and gossips. High society in England is shown by expensive toilets and endless chatter. I'm not attracted to gossip, so the movie was boring to me. In the room I yawned: so long this chatter.
Director Michael Engler stuck to the series line. Engler directed Sex and the City (1998-2004), which also consists of female gossip. One thing that struck me in the film was how much it depicted a servant who was proud of her place in society. The film extols the English aristocrat, and how he is all happy to help and serve. English high society is stiff. For some reason in the film inserted a scene with homosexuals. Again, this tolerance: homosexuals have moved into the English aristocracy. I didn’t like the movie because of its inaction.
I will refer this picture to the genre not of melodrama, but to “film-talk”. This is a regular soap opera that was filmed for the big screen. This film is an adaptation for the big screen of the idea of a soap opera (series).
The film praises the stiffness and snobbery of the aristocracy, and the gratitude of servants to their masters for their place. I wasn't interested. The film is very boring and not catchy. You can thank the five artists of the film for their beautiful costumes.
I love movies that capture the entourage of the era. The aristocratic ancestral estate of past centuries with living inhabitants can captivate the viewer for all two hours of timekeeping. Everything looks like a film adaptation of a very thoughtful and classic book. The events in the abbey are described so epicly, from different angles, that from the first minutes you completely forget the name of the next character. There are cooks and managers of different varieties, dressmakers, aristocrats themselves and even a plumber!
What the film clearly lacks in my opinion is its emotional brilliance. Yes, there were a couple of love lines, family dramas, funny moments, but all of them are not twisted to the heat. Stormy and sharp plot twists intriguing viewer here also not to find. Everything is very predictable and superficial. Also, homosexual tolerance was tied to the picture, I do not mind if a person is called to tolerance for minorities, but here it was paid too much attention and with the main plot it does not fit very well.
The thought of the film leads to a certain morality, that human determination, confidence, enthusiasm, openness to difficulties and changes consolidate in themselves the core on which stands the welfare and prosperity of the people.
I recommend for lovers of the appearance of the era, or looking for something easy and kind where even court games are held without tangible injections.

The feature film “Downton Abbey” is a beautiful, but essentially optional continuation of the cult series.
The quality does not change him this time. The quality of the production, scenery, costumes, acting is traditionally at a high level, and the introductory music, as before, creates an atmosphere of pleasant expectation.
The film is designed exclusively for fans of the series, and those who remember both the characters and events well enough, because there are simply no tips, introductions or explanations. The viewer who is not familiar with the television source will not understand absolutely nothing, but, frankly, the series is not designed for outsiders. This is a meeting of old friends after a long separation.
In general, the film is more about the atmosphere than about events. That beauty and solemnity, along with the comfort and positive charisma of most characters, cause simple but pleasant emotions of the viewer. We rejoice in their small victories, worry a little for them in moments of difficulty, laugh at jokes and admire the conservative grandeur of the old estate.
However, the events themselves are of a local nature, and even the arrival of the monarchs in the possession of Grantham serves as a reason for the general flywheel of events, rather than the center of what is happening. Drawing the manner of narration directly from the series, the film devotes screen time to almost each of the characters, providing them with several replicas, brief adventures and minor, by and large, actions. Unlike a full-fledged, independent movie, we will not see the development of the characters, their metamorphosis in the course of the plot, in the end, as such a culmination is not here either. Perhaps if the plot concentrated around several main characters, giving them more space for action, the overall narrative would only win.
Throughout the viewing does not leave the feeling that before us another episode, like Christmas specials, released at the end of the seasons of the series. The movie ends in exactly the same state of affairs as it begins, with the exception of a few exceptions, which only underlines the rule. In such situations, if the rental turns out to be successful, in a few years we can expect another continuation.
In the end, there’s all the best things that we love about Downton Abbey as a series, but there’s clearly no thing that makes it a full-length feature film.
However, loyal fans have the opportunity to return to their somewhat native old England.
Many writers, both realists and romantics, have been delighted to describe the picturesque paintings of England for centuries. Of course, there are many myths and stereotypes associated with this country, which in my opinion are very attractive. Oatmeal for breakfast, a tea break at five in the evening, a perfect lawn, a black cab, the crown of the British Empire, and many other symbols suggest that perfection lies in the details. So the creators of the series "Downton Abbey" do not miss the opportunity to reflect their ideals and try their hand at the full-length picture of the same name. As the creator of the series and screenwriter Julian Fellows says: We live in such an alarming time, and in the world of Downton there is some calm. They're dressing up for dinner, being polite to each other and all that. It is a pleasant oasis away from the volcanoes of merciless anger that surround us in real life.
I assume that the new work will appeal to those who have not seen the series, but is an avid Anglophile. The main action will take place in the Yorkshire mansion Crowley family, when the estate comes King of Great Britain George the fifth with his wife Maria. Such a great and significant event perfectly coexists with the insignificant everyday trifles of all the inhabitants. The reception of royals is certainly important, as is the preparation for it, and here everything should be organized at the highest level: the arrangement of tables, cleaning rooms, purchasing products, etc., from which many plots, both dramatic and funny, are formed. The most gratifying thing in the film was the position of servants and masters, everyone is happy with their position, and the whole mechanism is built on mutual respect. Of course, this is an idealistic social picture, but it reeks of a sense of nobility.
"Downton Abbey", primarily a costume film. Typical Englishmen always seem to me pedantic and strict in the good sense of the word. When the words "English style" there is an image of an elegant classic: a man in a coat, a woman in an elegant dress, when great importance is attached to the elements of the wardrobe - brilliant cufflinks, satin bows, feathers, gloves, secular styling. And the camera closely monitors all the nuances, giving a closer look at the beautiful touches. Perhaps the story should be ranked as a tabloid genre, but thanks to the exquisite retro wrapper, there is no feeling that you are watching tasteless, just the opposite, something cozy and warm fills the soul, like a trip to good old England.
Paying homage to the six seasons of the series, the movie is not outstanding, but it turned out to be complete and self-sufficient, for which it receives my praise. As a true gentleman, the film "Downton Abbey" is true to tradition, and these traditions are perhaps a magnificent content of the film, which gives a steady faith in tomorrow - with new experiences, meetings and partings, great joys and small adversity.
Amid the noise of the world premieres of the next franchises and blockbusters, so sometimes you want to not go anywhere and stay in home comfort. But the feeling of home is a relative concept and it is quite possible to get through the cinema. In the opening credits of Downton Abbey (2019), it really feels like you're back home.
This is not surprising: six seasons, fifty-two episodes, which, if watched continuously, will last more than two days. So with these heroes we lived a lifetime, we know thoroughly their habits, wardrobes, secrets and subtleties of relationships. Downton Abbey is to some extent our home, which we arrogantly claim together with the Crowley family.
The focus of the series was that you could watch it on long winter evenings, with a cup of cocoa or a box of candy, you could stay up at night to watch the season, wait for surprises from Julian Fellowes in the new series. Now I had to pack up, buy a ticket in advance, get to the cinema in time, so as not to be late for a reception with Lord Grantham. And the joke is that you don't even dare to take popcorn to the hall, because it's kind of uncomfortable to crunch in the face of the dowager Countess Lady Violet - you don't just think she sees you, but you're sure that you're not encouraging. And in general, the magic of the big screen does its job: seeing this noble family on their silk sofas in the blue living room, involuntarily straighten your back.
Of course, the film version of Downton Abbey is not a repetition of the plot collisions of the series (rather a sequel), and it can be watched even by someone who has not seen a single series of TV epics. But what pleasure will he have who knows the history of Lady Edith’s enchanting transformations, or the dramatic fate of Lord Grantham’s previous dog, or the uncompromising character of Mrs Patmore? This is not something that changes the impression of the film, but becomes a kind of pass to the circle of initiates, from the series “who knows, he will understand.”
"Downton Abbey" you want to watch with a pencil (or phone) to record the sparkling aphorisms of the Dowager Countess Grantham, but in this case you risk losing sight of the incredible beauty of plans, or changes in the design of the library, or the new hairstyle of Lady Mary. So let’s leave the transcription of Lady Violet’s remarks for the future – at the moment when the film “Downton Abbey” can be seen at home, with a cup of cocoa and candy.
After all, every time we include this story, we realize that the Abbey takes us under its shadow - we receive an invitation to a reception on the occasion of a visit to the estate of the royal couple. And here for the first time and truly envy the British monarchs, for whom in Downton there are always free guest rooms.
The film ' Downton Abbey' is a candy more for fans of the series than for those who first meet the Crowley family. Because there is time to explain who is who and whose relative is not at all. What is the end result?
1. A spectacle that fans have been waiting for long before the release of the last season. The film continues the stories of the main characters, giving a new round of development of some characters, but invariably weaving together the stories of servants and their masters under one roof.
2. The capricious weather of England, making its own adjustments to the plans of the heroes: there is rain, and fog and blue sky with clouds floating on it and the sun, shaded by truly picturesque greenery.
3. The High Light of Britain and Servants Full of Self-Dignity.
But for fans of the series, these words are not enough.
Because there is no way to describe the pleasure of Lady Violet’s sarcastic but no less apt statements and her intrigues, the main goal of which has always been and will be the well-being of the family. I applaud the incredible M. Smith.
Pleasure from the gentle, wise and conciliatory speeches of Lord and Lady Grantham. H. Bonneville and E. McGovern, as always charming.
An aesthetic feast of dresses and relationships between Mary, responsible for the reception of the royal couple and Edith, accustomed to her position, eternal rivals, but also sisters. M. Dockery and L. Carmichael Bravo!
Joy for Branson and the timely appearance of Henry.
Confirmation of one of the basics of education existing in certain countries that children should be seen, but not heard. And yet I was glad to see the grown-ups of Sybil, Marigold, George and who would have thought Caroline.
But what really pleased me was the servants!
Carson's return and Barrow's banquet felt like a first-season atmosphere. Strict and discreet Mrs Hughes. The incredibly inventive Mr. and Mrs. Bates. Always dissatisfied with something Daisy and her personal stop tap Mrs Patmore. Touching Moseley and his aria. How they rubbed the nose of the royal servants!
Yes, it is like another Christmas episode, without any twists in the script, but invariably sets a high bar with acting, the work of the director, composer, costume designers and decorators.
All this, mixed in a single cocktail of a beautiful film, seasoned with a pinch of nostalgia of bygone seasons for fans and lavishly flavored with aesthetic beauty for the viewers ' Abbotswto Downton' for the first time.
Ages change, generations pass, but Downton remains unchanged. To myself, traditions and people living there.
P.S. Thank you for a good movie.
Everything you wanted to know about the British high society, but were afraid to ask
Well, or the manual "How to receive the king and remain alive and in sound mind." Who's closer?
For a long time I doubted whether or not to go to the movies. Uncomfortable sessions, not too pleasant reviews. I had the impression that I would lose nothing if I waited for the quality and watched the film on the couch under the plaid. But then I realized that I would regret if I missed the opportunity to see my favorite characters on the big screen.
I have watched the series several times. The first three seasons, I can’t count that. This movie was made for me and people like me. Those who have not seen the series will not understand or appreciate it. The director does not set himself the task of acquainting with the characters and the situation in general. To enjoy the film, you must know the Abbey people and love them. Just like that.
It was a two-hour euphoria for me. Granny Crowley and Isabelle were responsible for the humor in the film, finally handing out earrings to all the characters who did not get happiness in the series. Poor Moseley was in the most ridiculous situations, Mr. Carson always knew how much silver would be needed for dinner, and the ingenious Mr. Bates had a plan ready to get rid of the interference and put Downton’s servants in the most favorable light.
The owners of the estate also keep a high stamp. Mary takes care of all the troubles in preparation for the highest visit, the newly made Marquis Edith as always finds something to suffer even at the high-society ball, Tom looks organically not only in the circle of his family, but even among princes of blood and kings. Grandma plots another intrigue, and Isabel tries to contain her belligerent fervor.
And all this in the atmosphere of balls, receptions, outfits, exquisite snacks and everything that for six seasons was famous for the series “Downton Abbey”.
Overall, it really feels more like a Christmas rush than a feature-length movie. But meeting old acquaintances is so great. I got two hours of real pleasure.
It's certainly not a dozen. But for the sense of nostalgia and past merits ...
8 out of 10
One of the most long-awaited films of this year finally came out on the screens of cinemas of our country. And I must say, the expectations were worth it.
The full-length version of the cult in every sense of the series became a worthy continuation, earning the praise of Downton fans from around the world.
So, in short, the film takes place shortly after the events described in the series, namely in 1927. And the film begins, in fact, as well as the series - with a letter. However, this time the news is less tragic, but no less exciting - soon a couple of British monarchs will arrive at Downton Abbey. This means that everything should be perfect.
And now, against the background of this event, the main action of the film unfolds.
The film lasts two hours, and although the first hour everything happens somehow quickly and even a little confused, the second half proceeds thoroughly and leisurely, just in the English style. So in the end, when the allotted two hours come to an end, it seems like you did not see the movie, and the whole season of the series.
The actors, as always, are on top. Decorations, costumes, dialogues, familiar faces of beloved characters - everything makes you plunge into the beloved atmosphere of good old England. For fans of the series, this is just a rest for the soul - here the creators of the film withstood all the canons and style of the series. Don't pick on me.
The plot itself is also not bad, although there were some annoying moments. Although in the series I was generally warm to the assistant cook Daisy, but in the film she was somewhat annoyed by her frequent discontent.
It was nice to see Lord Grantham again and the kindly sly look of his wife Cora. I was glad that Tom Branson had a lot of screen time this time, and his line, I think, was one of the main ones.
Separately, I want to say about, as always, the brilliant game of the inimitable Maggie Smith. Violet Crowley is incomparable, and her remarks will once again be scattered into quotes... already flying away. And her eternal hamstrings with Isabelle Crowley never get bored. I want to see as many women as possible on the screen. However, this time they added another, new, but no less remarkable character performed by Imelda Staunton. The queen's maid of honor, Maud Bagshaw, perfectly fit into the plot, pretty spoiling Violet's nerves. Involuntarily you remember the fifth Harry Potter movie - here they are, Minerva McGonagall and Dolores Umbridge.
The result is that the film turned out to be colorful, interesting, maybe not always dynamic, but this is not required here. If you’re a fan of the show, you’ll probably like the movie (although it’s better). If you have not watched the series, I would recommend at least a brief description of the main characters of the series, because sometimes it can be difficult for an ignorant viewer to understand who is who on the screen. But the overall impression of the film will not spoil.
At one time, Julian Fellowes’s Downton Abbey made a big impression on me. It felt the true drama of the characters and an interesting, non-trivial plot, which from season to season kept us captive, and most importantly, there was an intrigue that manifested itself somewhere stronger, somewhere weaker, but it captured. The beginning of a new century, the First World War, the whirlwind that twisted the fates of the heroes, their confused roads to happiness and much more. In the events, characters, surroundings, there was a real, albeit far from us, life and genuine experiences. What can be said about the continuation of the series, shot in full meter?
Downton Abbey is most like a Christmas tale, an episode that usually ends each season of Downton Abbey: everything is very elegant, beautiful, aristocratic and family-friendly. However, despite the hype surrounding a visit to the estate by high royals, the story told in the film carries nothing particularly new, but rather completes the story arcs of most characters.
Following the slogan “Honour us with your presence”, “Downton Abbey” draws us along, and we unwittingly engage in this journey of remembrance. It was a pleasure to once again meet the beloved heroes, admire their impeccable elegance, wander around familiar places and estates, celebrate the loyalty of servants and their exceptional service. In the film, we are repeatedly and very accurately given a hint-reminder of the plot vicissitudes of the original series, so that we remember them and, as it were, join its final chord.
Probably, there is no point in focusing on directing, acting, music and visual images, all this extremely accurately and safely migrated from the series to the film. As a result, “Downton Abbey” turns into a meeting with an old friend, about whom everything has been known for a long time. But the director introduced new elements to the plot - this is a different story in the old scenery, but at times it is perceived as the effect of déjà vu: "something similar in the series I have already seen." I venture to say, but it seemed to me that the film “Downton Abbey”, shot in the continuation of the series of the same name, does not have its own, special “highlight”, but rather uses memorable, beloved images and their personal stories. Sometimes there is a feeling that the director in the framework of one film is trying to embrace the immense, say a lot and as if everything at once, and as a result, he does not speak deeply about anything.
However, what is the secret of “Downton Abbey”, everyone has to unravel for himself, because he still achieves his goal: like good cognac, “Downton Abbey” causes some elusive aftertaste and a pleasant, chamber mood. Probably, this state can be compared to an evening spent at the opera, when the music and applause sounded, the curtain falls, and we have to return to our home.
Have a good view!
