Silence at home. The documentary “Confrontation” tells the story of a group of shareholders who were deceived by the construction company “City”. Shareholders invested their money in the construction of housing, but construction was stopped, and they were left without apartments. The film shows how shareholders fight for their rights, and how they face corruption and lawlessness.
The authors interview victims, follow their lives and actions, find rare chronicles and archival footage to describe this story from different angles. All this motley material visually unites stone unfinished houses, cold and gloomy, which hang over the ground and cover the sun.
Confrontation is a good example of a social documentary from Russia, shot by an obviously brave man. Kurakin’s film reminds Andrei Zvyagintsev’s “Leviathan” with the only difference that the reality shown in the “Confrontation” seems much more cruel and natural.
If Leviathan puts an end to its narrative, then this film poses a big question mark. We do not know exactly how the fate of the main character will turn out. Her fight will not end, even if she achieves justice in this round. This thought at the same time frightens and delights, gives rise to hope and makes you horrified by the dangers of the chosen path.
This film shows the underside of the world of construction companies and dubious businessmen who climb into large offices. And it makes you believe that there are people who are willing to fight for their rights, even if it seems that victory is impossible. Money can do anything if society is silent.
