The debut feature film 'Yards' directed by Andrey Korytko evokes a lot of opposite emotions - from delight in the captured frame to the desire to bury himself underground, hearing another plastic dialogue. The saddest thing is that in the course of the film it is seen, felt and strongly felt that the soul was invested in the creation of the picture. But at some point, a spoonful of tar penetrated the barrel of honey.
The film tells the story of Russian Eminem, who escaped five years ago from his home - and work as a builder - to Moscow to conquer the capital and turn the rap game. But as often happens, the road to the dream was completely thorny. Yaroslav ("Roman Evdokimov") - the main character of the film - must go through all the trials and not lose himself. In general, a classic story unfolds before the audience: Through thorns to the stars.
It is worth paying tribute to the team, not afraid to tell a story filled with elements of modern youth culture. It looks fresh and interesting...until there are too many of these elements. From time to time, you may even feel that the film is not a drama, but a real comedy. Once you see antagonist Tyler (Askar Ilyasov) to stop taking him seriously, because he is not like the king of beat-making, but the fantasy of a novice beat-maker about what he will look like in a year. And similar is typical for 'Yardov'.
Technically speaking, the film is also exciting. The picture is bright, juicy - nice to watch. The camera work is good, and some plans are taken just fine. But again, a spoonful of tar spoils the whole impression, namely - torn editing. And it would be nice if a bad gluing was an isolated event, but when you see it from time to time, you can begin to think that it is not a bug, but a feature, because it can not be so bad, especially when there are as many as three editors in the team.
In a nutshell, 'Yards' is a good movie, smothered by script and technical flaws, which you can not close your eyes to, even if you really want to, and therefore:
Having watched the Russian drama “Yards”, on the one hand I want to praise the authors for creating a good atmosphere, a good casting and a good production, but on the other hand there are claims to the script, which ultimately spoils the overall impression of viewing.
According to the plot, the young rapper seeks to assert himself and therefore does everything possible to get into a television show with his hit track, but at a certain point, the whole life begins to collapse right before his eyes, turning the goal into an unfulfilled dream. Not wanting to put up with fate, he begins to literally walk on his heads, not noticing how already with his own hands “finishes” the most expensive and the only thing he has left, namely friendship and love.
At first, the whole structure of the plot development arouses good interest, plunging the viewer into the abyss of dramatic events, thereby demonstrating how a person builds and at the same time breaks his life. The authors reveal important and very interesting features of a human nature, where it seems like a good guy wants the best, but it turns out as always, dragging even the closest and relatives to the bottom, while not realizing the horror of his actions.
And here it would seem that the point of no return has been reached, thanks to which the further plot hints at a very spectacular and dramatic outcome with all the ensuing consequences, whether it is a sad or happy ending. But instead, the authors demonstrate the most banal, simple and killing all the drama finale, after which a good author’s film in the spirit of “8 Mile” turns into an elementary pop passer in the genre of lyrical melodramas from the Disney channel. At the same time, the authors did not work out the arch of the hero, leaving all the existing problems in the same place, although it was in this structure of conceptual vision that the process of changing the hero in the course of history was simply necessary as air.
As a result, we get an average movie with good potential, which, unfortunately, was never fully realized. But in any case, fans of domestic cinema still need to pay attention to this picture. Of course, it is not necessary to go to the cinema, but from the moment of appearance on online platforms you can watch. Have a good time.
But don't forget who you are and where you came from.
When I saw the comments on yt under the trailer for the movie, I thought it was a second-rate money-sponsored movie that you would forget after watching.
But I decided to look, because nowhere found mention of state support, the names of famous directors or producers. It became interesting who went to hire without such a powerful support, and most importantly: why.
The answers to my questions are simple.
There are those who do something not for the sake of royalties, not for the sake of fame, and multi-million dollar fees (obviously, they do not smell like them here).
I saw a team that wants to do something from the heart, something that will be close to the creative person and those around them. A director and screenwriter who speaks simple human language in real stories without apocalypse and large-scale special effects. New faces who do not stamp their image in every film, but live. A young unknown artist who is important not to promote himself, but to tell his story. The sound director who created such an atmosphere that you notice by the goosebumps of the whole film.
In this movie, you'll never answer the question of "good or bad," he's just like me, like you, like all of us: human. He is looking for himself, doing what he can, what he sees as the right or only possible solution. But the important thing is that there is someone who showed you the way you didn’t see before and reminded you of who you really are.
Yarik is tired of Stavropol. It's impossible to develop. You can rap, walk around clubs and parties, but if you want to achieve something serious, you have to go to Moscow. There's the power of our country and opportunities that small towns don't have to dream of. Taking everything necessary, Yarik undertook to storm the capital. I got a kick in the forehead. There are thousands more in Moscow every year. Everyone wants theirs, but only a few succeed. Yarik himself believes that a difficult start is the start of something cool, you just have to wait. Then more.
A smart kid finds an outlet for serious people, he has his own company and his beloved girl. He gets the opportunity to speak in front of the audience, the chances of getting into the elite grow, the main thing is to be bolder. But the further he goes, the more pressure begins to come on him. Yarik is being asked to do what he can't do, but if he wants to be what he wants to be, he has to go over the heads if not over the corpses. At first, there is nothing terrible in this, but at some point it begins to be scary.
This film can be called a slice of the life of all those girls and guys who believe in Moscow, go to it from all over the country and think that they will dictate their conditions to the capital. Very quickly it becomes clear who is in charge here, and who needs to bow his head and without further questions do what they say. Unpleasant, of course, I do not argue, but such is life, nothing can be done.
Yarik himself turned out to be a bit idealized. He seems to back down in front of those who can help him, but he still remembers what love and friendship are. You can't get that out of your heart. The boy will have a whole bunch of moral problems, but this is even more interesting. Roman Evdokimov definitely got into the image. I never paid attention to him before, but now it turns out that he is a normal actor. He played great, and like rap is professional.
The film also has a very good soundtrack. Anyone who is passionate about rap will do well. Many performers sang live, which increases the value of the production. For the sake of rap, you can just go and watch this movie.
Overall, the film was at a level. First of all, it is worth seeing young people who are chasing a dream. Maybe then they will understand how to act in the future, what conclusions to draw.

Follow the dream – this phrase inspires any heart.
Follow the dream - this phrase inspires any heart that is not indifferent.
Since childhood, our dreams have helped us continue our earthly journey. Without them it would not be so fabulous and interesting. Do you agree?
The new Russian film "Yards" is about dreams and their achievements. About how difficult it is to go through the stage of choice, doubts, disappointments. The inner struggle and self-belief make themselves felt. The main character Yaroslav, who came to the capital from the provincial Russian city of Stavropol, is endowed with aspiration and faith, hope for luck and success. The dream of creativity guides him through various stages that help him change his reality and change himself. Staying true to yourself is not an easy task in today’s world. Being bold, brave, brave and honest is very difficult in a foreign city. Especially in the “pampered” capital, which “grinds” such daredevils, without even blinking an eye.
The director (Andrey Korytko) endowed his hero (Roman Evdokimov) and a part of himself, investing in him the character of not only his friend the musician (Yaroslav Zheltov). The image of the guy is kind, feeling, honest and loving. Yarik loves not only his loved ones, but also his creativity, which is necessary for him like air. He also understands that dreams are only achieved when you start doing something.
On the way to fame or dreams, in the life of everyone, there is a cleansing, some selection. Cleanliness, heights and views change. Selection is inevitable. But is it worth looking back or grieving for a past life, if what you want gets closer and closer to you?
A good modern film, with excellent musical accompaniment. Talented camera work, conveying the feelings of the heroes, his way. A bright and colorful cast that perfectly helped the director bring the story to life.
