Black Lives Matter I decided to watch this series after reading the book by K. Whitehead “Boys from Nickel”, according to the book of which “Underground Railway” was shot.
The series leaves an indelible impression of human cruelty, about how people treat each other only on the basis of differences in skin color. To be honest, I watched it for a very long time, paused, wanted to quit, but I returned to it again and again.
As a Russian person, I didn’t always understand some things, political correctness in relation to black people, the Black Lives Matter movement. It wasn’t until I got acquainted with Whitehead’s writings that I began to understand why. Why is it important to restore historical justice, to tell how it happened and how much suffering it caused? The series was watched in English with subtitles and it was especially unusual that slaves were called “It”, that is, an appeal for inanimate persons, an appeal to things.
When watching, it is impossible not to empathize with the main character - Cora, her life, faith in herself and the ability to experience grief and at the same time help others, do not give up.
The series leaves very strong, sometimes unpleasant impressions, but it is necessary to talk about these problems, because recognizing the problem is the first step towards its understanding and solution.
Definitely, I recommend you to watch it, it will not be easy, but it will allow you to look at the problem of inequality in society from the inside and find empathy and compassion. It is impossible to do good to everyone, but it is possible not to do evil to anyone!
