Low budgets #42: The Asylum Do you know why my name is King?
- Why not?
Because I'm the King.
Once again I am surprised by the efficiency of the dudes from The Asylum: these days they confidently rivet mokbusters to high-profile premieres, Christmas TV movies, original horrors and all sorts of beaten monster-movies. Unfortunately, the quality of the films has become places to sag - shot as if in a clip style on a hand-held camera, however, we are watching The Asylum for the sake of corporate madness, not good camera work, right? And with the scripted nonsense they are all right - once again this can be seen by watching this film.
So, we have before us a fantastic movie Ryan Prince "Last Level: Escape from Rankala". We must admit that the guys from Psycho jumped themselves - this film is a mockbuster to the new "Jumanji" with The Rock, as well as to "The first player to prepare" Stephen Spielberg. Honestly, the new "Jumanji" I have not watched, so we will not compare films, and in general it rarely happens that the original and the mockbuster at all at least something coincides.
Traditionally, I tell the story without explaining why or how it happened. Because the answer is the same: we're watching The Asylum, there's no question. The film tells about three girls who decided to open their club with old arcade machines. In one of them, 10 years ago, such a machine kidnapped his brother, who is all this time sitting in a game called Rankala. The same Rankala will be in the club - the machine has already been brought (although for some reason in different boxes). Having drunk on a stopper, the girls decided to see what kind of Rankal is, and she, of course, also kidnaps them. Now they face the task of going through all the levels of the game, defeating all the bosses (including a shark tornado) and saving the brother of one of the heroines.
The idea, in fact, is not as idiotic as in many of Esailum’s modern films. At least here, planes are not controlled by thought, and King Arthur is not fighting a giant robot. One way or another, a set of absurdity of what is happening and the absolute illogicality of actions is present. Dialogues, as usual, are written on the knee and in places are very funny - everything you need for a film of this category.
However, seeing at the very beginning of the first boss, i.e. shark tornadoes, I thought that the next bosses will be some cool characters of other films The Asylum, but it did not happen - they were some standing in one place men who do not attack the main characters at all. And it would be cool - it would be a real gift for fans of the films The Asylum.
In general, except for fans of the studio, the film can only be liked by younger audiences, because everything is done in a childlike and very superficial way. The writer just shows a video game template and doesn’t want to go into the details at all — that’s the level, that’s the boss, that’s it. No detail or detail, why? Computer graphics, by the way, a lot, and it is still incredibly rugged, so it all looks very, very fun.
To sum up: a cheerful and fun film shot to all the standards of The Asylum of recent years. All the same clip editing, all the same wooden dialogue, all the same absurdity. Of course, it does not reach the “golden” films that the company shot 7-10 years ago, but it will also fit. Fans of such films for a single viewing will quite go, and the average viewer wants to advise to bypass the film side. You know what Esailum is.
