It's like an electric current. It's all glowing inside me. Sleeping Beauty Katya is diligently engaged in ballet and is preparing for an audition, according to which, she can get to study in New York, but it is not clear her dream or her father (the famous dancer). From the “eternal dream” she wakes up meeting with “Prince” Marlon, dancing hip-hop. She enters the world of street dancing and realizes that ballet is no longer her dream.
It would seem that a banal film about dancing, where the classics face street dancing, what is there to watch? But in this film there are not as many dance numbers as it usually happens in films of this genre. A lot of screen time is devoted to the internal conflict of Katya, her relationship with her father, the development of relations with Marlon. Dance numbers are a continuation of the dialogue of the characters and their inner experiences.
Separately, I want to highlight the storyline of Katya’s internal struggle, which continues throughout the film. It was not that she once danced hip-hop, immediately gave up ballet and renounced the family. This conflict tears her apart so much that she cannot fully enjoy the new passion, she is bending under the weight of guilt. But at the same time, it is also difficult for her to study ballet through force only to preserve her relationship with her father.
I also liked the fact that there was no fight between dancers or clash between classical and modern dance – a typical plot of dance films. There was a minimum of healthy competition, and otherwise love of dancing, life and support each other.
A light, incendiary film that will definitely cheer you up and after which you will also want to start dancing.
