18th century, England. The main character Steed Bonnet is a married, with two children a representative of high society, an aristocrat, a lover of fashion and exquisite textiles, a romantic to the bone and a reader, a pacifist and just a lonely person, whose fate is to get mired in the routine of ordinaryity, dislike, contempt from loved ones and everyone around.
It began from childhood, when a little boy liked to just collect flowers in the clearings, and he was teased and insulted by peers. The father poking his nose in every fear of the child did not even try to raise a man in him, but only did what he said ' you are pathetic, you do not deserve anything, you are pathetic'
Steve grew up, married out of love, which was quite normal at the time, and lived his life every day more and more aware that just his presence is already spoiling the life of others. In his head came the worst and rash idea - to become a pirate, to go to the polar from his usual topicality of life.
After the team was found, the most inexperienced, clumsy and goofy ' Pirate ' all over the world went in search of adventure, wanting to become Luffy of Van Piece. Adventures do not have to look for a long time - they are imposed by history on their own, enveloping the main character with a chain of events from which, according to an amazing coincidence, his idol and at the same time the most famous and bloodthirsty pirate of mankind - Blackbeard helps to get out.
According to my estimates, the series is the most suitable for the TV format, the line of playback of which was conceived by the authors of this drama-action comedy. Of the special features - the open sea, in the eye is not very striking, if you do not try to catch. Actually, there is not much humor in the series, but positive emotions make up for the feeling of kindness of the characters, sensuality, openness and love. Only Taika Waititi can bring a new breath of clean air to the piracy issue. There are no Hollywood turns and pictures of the type ' here is the ship going into sunset, see what picture', there are no European standards of cinema, only from netflix a little temper, well, you understand. But let's be honest with ourselves - in fact, in real life, most pirates were gay.
The whole moral of the show is not about morality, but about finding ourselves to understand what we really want. One wants peace and quiet, and the other wants the adventure and unpredictability of tomorrow. At the junction of these two worlds, balance, a sense of fulfillment and love are born. Taika Waititi showed us this in such a very simple, seemingly at first glance, picture. It's just New Zealand cinema.
I am ready to sing odes to this series and watch endlessly. Everything is beautiful in it - the script, acting, dialogue, humor. The second season, what more can I say?
An up-and-coming pirate show had potential. The unusualness and parody of the authors aroused interest, and jokes, mockery of the serious message of piracy were responsible for humor. The plot interestingly sends a wealthy aristocrat, who is accustomed to order, accuracy and culture, on sea voyages with a team "on the announcement". The first series reveals the story of the past of the main character Steed. Against the background of a positive and diligent captain, the rest of the team of terrible pirates just acts in an ironic manner.
The plot affects every member of the team, but already has ambiguous notes of development. The intrigue is kept by the gloomy and frightening Blackbeard, a legendary pirate with heartlessness and cruelty. While the script only gave intrigue, returning the viewer to familiarity with the team. They are ridiculed and ridiculed on the boat. How's the team doing? How can there be a pirate ship without a flag? How should the robbery of other water transport take place?
The series is funny and fervent on all counts until we meet Blackbeard in all Vaititiv beauty. Taika delights with the role, charisma and the complete opposite of the entire pirate team Steed. Like excitement, new adventures. A mixture of humanism and crime. The plot raises two opposites and mixes. Steed, who always dreamed of adventure, read about the Beard, and Edward Teach, who, unexpectedly (!), is already tired of his pirate life and wants to diversify it with something aristocratic.
At this stage, all the other characters just disappear. That's the problem of staging. While the viewer did not know the team, the intrigue allowed to gradually reveal each pirate separately, but with the appearance of the main trump card, everyone is swept aside. Yes, it is still a comedy that ridicules the unusual images of bloodthirsty pirates, and sends our pirates to various pirate coves, to mysterious islands, to Tortuga. Each location carries some significance, expands the geography, introduces new characters: from those who want the death of the main characters to the “ghosts” of the past, keeping the secret of bygone times. But this seriousness now shoots wonder, then dims in the stream of monotony.
The series makes jokes about every serious topic. It highlights the relationship between Steed and Edie: how they will behave in a particular situation, and regardless of the fact that the series about a particular member of the team – all seasoned with Waititi sauce. Can I have a Blackbeard and Steed series without any side branches? The problem is that pirates lose their importance. You get tired of constant humor, and really intriguing events either develop too slowly or are resolved in one series.
Touched literary pirate Lucius (Lucius), revealed his secret, a little funny drama, and then still the ball is ruled by a pirate couple. The story of the silent pirate Jim is the most interesting, mysterious, unexpectedly transformed. There are past mistakes, revenge, and mystery, but it is pushed to the background for the sake of an old friend of Blackbeard. You know what? For Steed's jealousy and some gay jokes. Not cool, not cool! You can keep a certain level of humor, you can do a cross-cutting story, not just the revenge of a former member of the Blackbeard team.
The series touches on interesting events. Shows transformation, attachment, dependence. He travels. It gives out pirate enthusiasm in the spirit of Jack Sparrow’s adventures, but all the time it goes off course, all the time adding unnecessary episodes. To stretch the timing? You have a series that has been renewed for a second season. As a result, the pirate comedy came out very distant and tired. Humor grows into a “sweeper wand”, and really interesting plot moves are drowning in pirate everyday life.
In addition to Waititi, of course, a lot of other writers and five other directors put their hands on it, but everything looks confusing. Something this year Taika is overdoing. That "Thor: Love and Thunder," that "Our Flag Means Death" - looks all the same. We need a really dramatic push. Remember "Jojo Rabbit"? This is Waititi!
Pirates have become comedy heroes more than once or twice. Perhaps the most remarkable case of recent decades is “Pirates of the Caribbean”, which hooked the audience not so much with adventures as with jokes. Therefore, the lack of any originality, the crappyness of the topic does not doom a film or series about pirates to failure. Especially if the case is taken by one of the most gifted comedians of Hollywood Taika Waititi, who has something to say even where everything has long been said. However, even with such initial data, “Our flag means death” is not an absolute success. Although piracy from this angle, frankly, was rare, the series still lacks something to truly stand out from the ranks of its kind. Moreover, some well-conscious decisions have led to the fact that “Flag” is boring, and its comedic component quite badly does not meet expectations.
In the center of the plot of "Flag" pirates, but this series is not so much about pirates as about people. Its central theme is the importance of determining one’s own life path, regardless of the path predetermined. Of course, inevitably appearing in the series about “sea wolves” sea means freedom, but, remarkably, not for all the characters, but only for the main – Steed, who preferred sea waves to social events. On the other hand, for the second hero, Blackbeard, the sea is not freedom at all, but the very predestination and personal prison, and the path to freedom has yet to be found, even if this path seems, shall we say, unusual. An interesting observation: the two main characters here are not the only ones whose predetermined lives did not bring happiness - such as the first one, for example, the so-called Jim, whose past also doomed to a certain fate from which it was worth escaping. In the end, all of the above leads to the idea of the right of any person to happiness, which, however, must be obtained, conquered and realized, and which is rarely accrued to those who simply act as someone has established.
On the other hand, the series tries to emphasize the importance of the appropriate choice for either of the characters by the example of both main characters. Any significant change in life cuts the way back, which is better to understand, so as not to do stupid things. You can not enter the same river twice, which is confirmed by the season finale for Blackbeard, when he obviously does not become himself the same, but only pretends to be himself, mercilessly replaying as a bad actor, which only emphasizes the fidelity of the above theory.
The unconventional love that takes place in Flag also fits into the context of decisive change, complementing it, because such a conscious choice clearly means exactly the same break with the past as everything else. However, it is not a matter of unconventionality: quite ordinary love stories of the second plan testify in the context of the characters involved about the same thing, since feelings – no matter what their nature – in themselves can turn everything upside down and be an obvious factor in choosing a different path in the search for happiness.
"Our Flag Means Death" focuses so explicitly on the depths of human relationships that it forgets what is important to any pirate work: adventure. In the series, there is practically no clear through storyline, except for the relationships of the main characters, and only it could form a convincing background for everything else. “Flag” throws from the location to the location, aimless and meaningless, which indicates that on the pirate theme, alas, to say the authors of the series absolutely nothing. Pirates in the Flag are nothing more than entourage, they even serve as a source of jokes. Although the series has all the attributes of piracy – sea battles, treasure hunts and pirate islands – all this leaves the impression of execution only for the sake of a “tick”, while to come up with something colorful and really significant from the creators simply failed. "Flag" is not at all adventure, not bright, which, together with controversial humor, greatly reduces the value of this series.
“Flag” could be forgiven if it were really funny. I won’t be shy: there are good jokes here, but for a pure comedy from Taika Waititi they are not enough. The obvious advantages of local humor include the fact that at any time it does not fall below the belt, but the disadvantages are some emphasis on an unconventional topic, however, in terms of humor is not too intrusive. I think the pirate humor in Flag did not work out because of the lack of real interest in the topic of piracy, the desire to laugh regardless, which led to a fairly average result.
Unfortunately, I can’t put Our Flag Means Death on my favorite shows. In my opinion, it turned out more than fresh. The series lacks dynamics, brightness, adventure, lacks strong humor and a stable central storyline that clearly explains to the viewer why it was filmed. As a series about happiness “Flag” turned out, but the trouble is that on this topic, who did not talk. I would like the sequel, if it is, to be able to correct the mistakes of the first season – there are opportunities, and Taike Waititi’s talent is definitely enough.
It was a great comedy series about the most dorky pirate team in the world under the guidance of the most bizarre captain, who will find himself in this life even after escaping from his family and routine ... and then brought the glass.
(light spoilers possible)
You will find 8 episodes with adventures in a world unusual for both the viewer and the pirate-gentleman Steed Bonnet, who has assembled the most unscathed team of scammers, nuts and losers to rule them as an effective and fair leader. But he needs a good example, a real sea wolf, to teach Steed how to piracy. The only problem is that life sends him Blackbeard, a legendary pirate, charismatic man. And a depressed whiner with a midlife crisis. In which GG falls in love and builds relationships the last two series according to the precepts of melodramas from the channel Russia 2, where the characters eat glass without meaning and justification. And if Steed Bonnet’s storyline wraps up quite brightly towards the end and he, as a good protagonist, comes to conclusions adequate to his position and twists out a kind of genius, then the character of Blackbeard is a real swamp of longing, schizoid bipolar and a complete lack of common sense in actions. Someone will say ' suffering for love justifies insanity' to which I will answer ' and why did he even think he was abandoned?!' It is not surprising that the arch of a formidable pirate at the end ends with an epic painful fracture without much meaning, except for the desire to show the viewer the suffering of one complete irrevocable jerk, driven by the stupid opinion of his supposedly close person. And with this, we have to live in anticipation of the second season and the reunion of the heroes - one of whom rose from the ashes of his delusions, and the second decided to make a fool of his life, initially being that rag.
If you reduce the character to the state in which Blackbeard appears at the end, then it is worth first demonstrating his ' Terrible' and ' Terrible' at the first appearance. Otherwise, it is not clear what he has to do ' come back ' since from the first scene he already appeared on the verge of depression and intoxication from life, just concealed it a little better? . .
Also a big plus of the series is the unusual humor and colorful characters of the ship & #39; Revenge & #39;, the misadventures of which under the command of two mad captains to watch - a pleasure. The development of their storylines and jokes associated with them, you expect much more continuation of the love line, too close in level to the soap dramas from the channel & #39; Russia 2'. So we're looking forward to a new season!
As soon as I watched this series, I immediately decided to write a review, while the sea of emotions and inspiration boils inside.
I came across the series quite by accident, and after watching the trailer, there was no doubt – you need to watch. I wanted something funny and easy.
The idea is quite original: a rich aristocrat decided to leave his family and his fortune for the sake of a pirate life and adventure. Steed Bonet does seem at first glance a faint-hearted slob, but his energy and optimism can be envied. And he does not have the courage to take, because not many will dare to do such an act as to radically change their lives.
Throughout the series, incredible and sometimes seemingly hopeless events occur with him and his team, but each time they twist and win. Of course, everything here is exaggerated and grotesque, but this is no less interesting.
And humor. This is definitely worth noting because the humor is fantastic! It's been a while since I laughed. Some phrases are worth recording or at least remembering. And humor does not fall below the belt, as it is now often seen in other films.
The final was left open, so I look forward to continuing. Such a series simply cannot end on a sad note. I hope to see new adventures and, of course, the reunion of the two captains.
The aristocrat becomes a pirate. Sounds promising! The topic of a person who finds himself in a foreign environment, but tries to preserve his principles is always interesting, and the dramatic situation is already sewn up by default.
It's starting energetically. We are on a large old ship of the 18th and 19th centuries. There are vicious pirates around, but you immediately notice a touch of hipstery on each of them. This is the first bell of Taika Waititi's humour. Recall ' Ghouls', like there are vampires, but they are also pretty shabby and changed human society.
In this film, pirates seem to live in the old days, but dress and behave as if trying to fit into modern society. Of course, the directors do it deliberately and thereby try to make the audience laugh and stand out from the pile of other films about pirates. But they are doing it in the forehead. Pirates are cool, don’t change them.
Definitely feels ' Hand' Taiki Waititi, but if you look at the list of creators, he turns out to be a producer, and in the list of directors is only sixth, in the credits in the film he is not listed as a director at all, and in the list of screenwriters he is not listed. And promote the film only as a new brainchild Waititi. It is clear, he has many fans. And the question immediately arises - ' Will the viewer be entertained in the style of Taike' I will say this: 'They will try!' and formally they will. But after watching each episode, there is a feeling that something was not given to you, the tols finished too early, or started too late.
But really the plot in the series is not clear. The reasons why the aristocrat decided to become a pirate are explained throughout the series. Like wife ' sawed ', the ghost of the father tired, everything is boring. But it looks artificial and not plausible. That's why I never got into the hero.
Separately, I want to celebrate the performance of actors. She's superb. Whether from the caste, or because of the work of the director on the set, but it seems that you are shown something new, unblemished, you feel freedom and air in the frame.
In the manner of the actors and the style of storytelling, the series is more similar to European than Hollywood. For me, this is good, since typical Hollywood plots, with all their diversity, are similar and over time, nothing remains in their head except porridge. From the same film remains a pleasant aftertaste and your film receptors learn something new.
Before us is another comedy project created with the participation of the talented Taika Waititi, whose filmography eloquently shows that he is striving to test his comedic genius in different settings. It was already about vampires, and about Marvel superheroes, and about a computer game, and even about the Second World War. And now this motley list has been replenished with the entourage of piracy of the 17th-18th centuries.
The main feature of the series is the application of modern morality to those bearded times, which in itself is quite comical. For example, the relationship in the local pirate team is more like a working environment in an IT company, where all issues are resolved through polite general discussions, and employees provide each other with psychological support and are tolerant and respectful of each other’s personal characteristics. Only some members of the team indicate to the captain in the person of the pampered aristocratic life Steed Bonnet (Reese Darby) that they are actually pirates, and to be called such, you need to do all sorts of piracy, at least a pirate flag sewn.
The plot of the series itself is not particularly interesting. Some storylines look quite foreign in the midst of a general farce. For example, Jim (a) performed by Vico Ortiz. We can assume that it was introduced to emphasize the frivolity of everything else with its deliberate seriousness. But in general, Jim as a character is only annoying, and the appeal to him (to her) from the other characters either as a man or as a woman leads to suspicions that Jim exists only to represent LGBTI people (which is confirmed by Google the actor (actress)). Speaking of which. “Agenda” in “Our Flag...” penetrated into the relationship of almost all the characters. Sometimes it is woven quite softly and works well for the comedy component. And sometimes she will smile so rude and ridiculous that even a comic tone does not save her. What is worth only a meeting of widows who sit in a mug and, drinking tea, tell each other what kind of men are useless, that they only interfere with life, limit them in every possible way, and in general it is good that their husbands died.
However, everything changes with the appearance of Taika Waititi himself as the legendary pirate Blackbeard. I thought Waititi was a good actor from watching his other works, but his Edward Teach showed me that he was not just good, but very good at acting. His appearance is unlikely someone's tongue will turn terrible, but his Blackbeard will laugh convincingly and when yelling at someone, threatening to tear his eye, and when sitting on the windowsill and sobbing, clasping his knees with his hands. Even the peculiar nature of his relationship with Steed Bonnet looks organic and burns with interesting chemistry largely due to the game Waititi.
Overall, the series left mixed impressions. But it is more good than bad.
Every pirate captain captain captains pirates differently.
An English aristocrat wants to become a pirate. On his way there are many obstacles, which he tries to overcome with the help of those close to him and acquaintance with Blackbeard.
Actors: Reese Derby plays an insecure Englishman - an aristocrat, who thought he could abandon loved ones, for the sake of a handful of pirate losers and a seedy boat (he managed to make a model of the ship in a small form). With the means, he decides to become the best pirate, avoiding massacres and without shedding blood. The funny thing is that Steed Bonner actually existed. The creators do not hesitate to show in the third series (apparently copied from Wikipedia) the image of Bonner when he decides to use his attitude towards the surrounding bandits as his characteristic chip. During the plot, many historical details are still preserved in the film. And by that, I mean that Steed worked under a great pirate.
Another highlight of this project (since Vaitivsky humor once again only in places goes out on familiar receptions), perfectly selected castes. For example, the happiness and sincere joy of seeing the Cherry (oh, sorry, everything does not come out Welsh's hero). Ewan Bremner at least I catch my eye extremely rarely. He plays Buttons, an old but not useless pirate. The non-false character and directness of his character will never get Bonnet out of the shit. Here, when the actor appears in each frame, you want to applaud and sing familiar notes from the soundtrack of the film Danny Boyle "Trainspotting." It would seem that we can present SPUD, in addition to the next nickname of the Button, his hero will become a good adviser at the time of a threat to the captain.
The creators do not dwell on the paraphrased history of Boennet or the funny, awkward moments that arise between sailors (such as choosing the best pirate flag). The cast, as he said, was selected interesting; first, to be at the helm of the director and actor (and even performing such a stunning, historical personality) Tayka Waititi not for the first time. He likes to be the center of attention and literally revels in his opportunities. But this ship called fame didn't keep him going for long. It is known that during the breaks on the set of “Thor 4” Taika walks around waving a glass of champagne on the sunbed, along the way not forgetting to lead a double service affair. And the paparazzi were not left without work capturing him in this form. I have no doubt that the work on the continuations of “Thor” (if any) will continue, the truth will do without the participation of Waititi. There is no denying that he could be excommunicated in a future collaboration across the Marvel Universe. After that, the viewer’s faith (mostly mine) may or may not have been shaken. However, this is not a reason to forget about his participation in the project in the person of an iconic person.
But there is a place for ladies in this story. The truth is a secret from everyone. Women don’t always cause trouble on a ship. Therefore, the authors decided to insert a love mix between Samson Kayo and Victoria Ortiz (the latter was remembered in the Mexican horror series Zombie Soldiers in the unremarkable role of Sergeant Vicki Valencia) From the first series, we get acquainted with the unusual Silent Jim (aka Boniface Jimenez), who will cut his throat and not wrinkle. But soon he/she will put his/her cards on the table. While Samson's hero is forced to hide his tender feelings, being a pirate on a ship is unforgivable to be soft. He is a controversial pirate who is torn apart by mixed feelings. The hero is harsh and fair, but tries to save Steed from trouble. You have to go after the captain and fix his joints! And when released from the instructions of the “gentleman captain”, tries to make the first awkward attempts to build a relationship.
Interesting participation Matthew Meher remembered by me in the historical tape about the feat of salvation "And the storm broke out." His hero boasts that he personally knows Edward Teach (and fables about the mystical image of Teach). The hero is too impulsive and refers to those pirates who are aiming at the captain's place.
I haven’t seen Leslie Jones for a long time, after the notorious “Hunters”. She played Fearless Jackie. The loss of her beloved husband is closely linked to one of the crew members of Revenge.
Everything else: Yes, there was such a pirate named Stead Bonnet who, based on history, fought twice for pirate activity. That's what it means to not learn from your mistakes. With an unusual history of piracy (partly derived from Daniel Defoe’s Universal History of Piracy), Taik Waititi. I note that the creators completely trusted the story, but made noticeable corrections to the narrative of their ironic and satirical comedy tribuche. Why the trebucha? Because there's no point in denying that the series is a little underdeveloped, despite the timing of 30 minutes. All the characters are very colorful from the deceased child abuser, who is GG after death and Bremner with a seagull on his head, to whom the Captain often turns for advice. The mention of Steed in this series was new to me because I didn’t know who Bonnet was. Now, having familiarized with the image of Derby, I understand that there was a mass murderer in the world. The place of this pirate is given in pop culture, for example in computer games Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Sid Meier's Pirates!
During the series I thought how unlucky the team with the captain. And the most real prototype of the Derby would be regretted for his lack of ability to conduct pirate activities, thereby ending his days badly. But the hero did not despair and to the end was faithful to his brotherhood and code of honor, escaped from prison (judging by another story of Charles Johnson). In general, the series is moderately normal, sometimes funny, but not too unlike Taika’s previous projects.
