Yeah, yeah, incredible. Oh, Tartakovsky, Tartakovsky... None of his projects came to me. Although everyone had enormous potential. Many people love him for transylvania, clones and samurai. But there are so many flaws in them that the pros pale! He's a great designer, but he's no screenwriter. In the Primitive, he decided to show the story visually, so as not to go into the details of the plot, but there he did not reveal.
Genji has a desire to work for an adult audience, but unfortunately, this is all seeming sensations. In fact, he can't jump above children's coloring books. This was demonstrated by his latest project, the Unicorn. Warriors of eternity. They are beautifully styled, drawn and animated, finally steampunk, charming characters, but...
Clumsy exposure in the forehead, unnecessary shots, constant dullness, running with pot after viewer, chewing and despondency. The humor is so simple that even Monsters are on vacation. Here, even take them if you remember. Tartakovsky was brought a script in which jokes related to the characters were painted, but the director was uncomfortable in it. And he directly over the storyboards depicted additional visual gags associated with facial transformation and hypertrophied emotions, as in a bad anime.
It is difficult for him to navigate in a high-quality plot, Genji does not like delayed reaction, sanspiens and a tangle of connections that unravel by the end of the story, give him every frame understandable. If the character is silently floating face up the river, then it is a metaphor for his inner experience, but here and now, we are sure that by the end of this episode he will overcome everything and go on to exist in his clichéd form.
There are so many moments in Unicorn where you could insert self-irony or contextual humor, wink with the viewer, cultural code, a hint of censorship or flirting with the agenda, but no! Everything is so serious and sound, even stupid children's visual humorously served pathos and geometrically verified, as if Tartakovsky a mason, not a sculptor.
And besides, the music sucks. No interesting plot, no inventive backstory, no original characters, no entertainment, no message, no soul, nothing useful, amazing or new. Thanks for the entourage, Genji, I have long wanted to immerse myself in paropunk, but a neural network would cope with a set of genre pictures.
