The story is very simple: actress Marsha Mason met the famous playwright Neil Simon. The story of their acquaintance he described in his play. Soon she was filmed, and the main role starred the wife of Neil Simon Marsha Mason. In the movie, names are changed. The playwright's name is George Schneider and her is Jenny McLaine.
The film consists of three well-designed acts - the acquaintance of the main characters, an idyll in their relationships and complexity. I will immediately say that the difficulties will be associated with the depressive memories of George Schneider about his former wife, who died.
The film itself is staged in the genre of the film-screen adaptation of the play, more resembling a television play. Meanwhile, the work of Neil Simon “revives” the cinematic space and with a decent performance of actors makes you follow with interest what is happening.
Marsha Mason creates a beautiful image similar to her character in the movie “Farewell Girl”. James Caan plays a rather complicated role as a depressed playwright. As in “Cinderella Liberty”, their joint duo “burns a spark”, and the nomination for the Oscar of Marsha Mason seems quite fair and deserved. I think Kaan deserved the nomination as well.
High praise for the excellent script - dialogue and plot at the highest level.
