Fernandel's will In the small village of Provence lives a modest farm worker named Antoninus. One day, his boss tells Antonin to take a 28-year-old horse named Willis to Arles. There, the horse will become a consumable under the saddle of a picador in a bullfight. “Not the worst end of life for a horse, and certainly more worthy than in the slaughterhouse,” Antonin’s friends assure him. But they do not take into account that for the old Antoninus Ulysses is like a son!
And so, two old men, a horse and a stableman set off on a long journey to Arles. On their journey they will meet different people. And even will be participants in the conflict of civilizations at a noisy, urban crossroads.
This is Fernandel's last film. Perhaps his creative testament: poignant, touching the past and the future, able to once again raise on the shield the main human values.
I can’t say the movie is funny, but there are jokes. I cannot say that sad, though sad, is enough. Rather, it is spiritual: this is the right word.
“Blessed is he who is like Ulysses from the glorious campaign.”
