As strange as it sounds, both the pros and cons of this film stem from the same thing.
On the one hand, the film rather wittyly ridicules the obsession of modern Americans with race and the perception of people first as black or white, and only then as individuals. On the other hand, in doing so, the film uses so much social humour on edge that you will often feel the perfect Spanish shame of just knowing you're actually hearing it. I had a special scurvy scene where characters argue emotionally about who is more oppressed, Jews from the Holocaust or African-Americans from slavery. With a mutual transition over the edge hints of Jewish scarb and black crime.
And surprisingly, the film ridicules not so much the real or, if I may say, ' traditional' racism, as racism is not conscious, and moreover, largely caused by attempts to avoid or expose it. The main character's mother tries so hard to show how friendly and respectful she is to her daughter-in-law's black roots that she literally knocks out bingo stereotypes about African-American heritage in every dialogue with her. The father of the latter almost directly says that the main character is not suitable for the husband of his daughter, because he did not come out in color. And so on and so forth.
That, in my opinion, is the main value of the film. Instead of any expected agenda, the main thing they want to convey to us is that people should be treated first of all as individuals, and not from the threshold to draw any conclusions about them only based on their skin color. And if you really want to show respect for minorities, you don't have to try to appear blacker than black people. Just treat them like people.
In general, if you want a somewhat silly but refreshing social romantic comedy that doesn’t go down to sermons pro ' white guilt', then watching this movie can be an interesting experience and entertainment. If you are allergic to modern American political content and jokes of the level ' it is too poor, I will say that this is a holocaust ring' cause you buhurt, then you better watch something else.
