Sometimes it’s so hard to rate any movie... you sit there and think, ‘How do I get those ten points?’ What criteria should I choose? Are these stars worth all the effort put into creating the picture? It is even more difficult to evaluate the film is hopelessly dreary, which definitely will not bring joyful emotions. Is it worth watching such a movie? I will try to answer this question with my review.
Deauvile, the main character of the film, is faced with the loss of his native man, his father. She is about thirty years old - seemingly an adult, but hardly ready for such a blow. The girl is faced with a world of services that you do not really want to get acquainted with: the morgue, cremation, undertakers and funeral rooms. She is assisted by her father’s mother and friend. In parallel with the preparations for the funeral, we see recordings from the video camera of the “culprit of the celebration”: the 90s, Soviet sets, young parents and a very small Deauvile.
The script is quite prosaic, because that’s how it really happens. This is the deafening effect of the news itself, after which everything in life fades into the background, and the feeling of unreality that is present throughout the picture (Dovile chooses which suit to choose for his father - for 30 or 50 euros, although he is still cremated); and, of course, the bitterness of losing a loved one, whatever he was, regret for words that did not have time to say or gifts that did not have time to give. However, the film is very expressive. Take, for example, people who provide ritual services – they are tired, have seen a lot in their lifetime and therefore cynical. With this automated thinking contrasts the pain of grandmother Deauville, who sincerely can not understand why her son was burned.
And against this background, even more positive emotions are felt, without which it is difficult to survive such an event. You empathize with the main character, who focuses on the little things, picking up music and flowers for memorials, photos and videos - and perhaps looking for comfort in these little things. Finally, this ridiculous batina is a joke as he takes off a TV tower, turning the camera to one side and asks: "Why did you overturn the tower?" Come on, bring her back! It’s actually a comedy, like all of our lives.
Is it worth watching this movie? I still don't have an answer to that question. The film is very heavy, but very high quality. I can’t even tell if watching it will make it easier for those who have experienced it. But this picture will definitely make you think about your life and the lives of others, about how the deceased person ends his journey, but his story continues with the forces of his loved ones.
P.S. I watched this film in the framework of the festival of Scandinavia and the Baltic countries “Pagnaya Zianne”. The Belarusian description of Deauvile is “flying”, that is, dreamy. And even if she speaks an incomprehensible language, her dreams and experiences will be close to everyone.
