On the streaming platform Apple TV+ is the premiere of the historical and fantastic thriller. The series is based on a novel by James L. Swanson, which tells the story of the incredible escape of John Wilkes Booth from the authorities. The book explores real-life documents written during the murder and years later by participants in the drama, including Booth himself. Swanson analyzes the motives, emotions and sympathies of Booth and his accomplices.
The series departs from the usual historical investigations with a sequence of revealed details and a clear follow-up to the criminal. Instead, the viewer throws into different time stages, showing important details for the plot, hinting at what the consequences led to. It is worth noting a cheerful, dynamically developing plot, the details of which give the series a political color. An important moment for those who are not interested in an exclusively gloomy thriller with chase elements, and not something more.
In addition to the main character and the protagonist, secondary characters appear in the center of the plot, giving the series greater authenticity of what is happening, and more immerse the viewer in the atmosphere of that time. Helping to feel the globality of the historical tragedy on the example of individuals belonging to different classes of society. Watching the fate and disclosure of minor characters becomes no less interesting than the main course of the investigation.
A separate unique feature of the mini-series was the performer of the role of Booth - a young British actor Anthony Boyle. More recently, some viewers could see it in a large-scale epic from Steven Spielberg “Lords of the Air” launched on the same Apple TV+. A series about the everyday life of American bombers during World War II, in which he played the role of Lieutenant Harry Crosby. In “The Hunt for a Murderer”, he played the opposite role – a disgusting racist and a maniac, giving a stunning acting result.
