My Wife is a Hitman at first seems like an ordinary spy comedy, of which there are a lot. Already anticipate the classic for the subgenre of gags, mediocre action and everything else. But rather quickly the film unfolds in a completely different steppe, and it turns out that it is still an action movie masquerading as a comedy, and not vice versa. Does that help the case? Well, not really.
The tape is actually secondary in everything. A cliched secret killer agency, a killer who decides to retire and spend the rest of his life with his family, and the subsequent persecution of the main characters by this very agency. And replacing the roles that the killer is not a man, but a woman, also does not change much, because this is also secondary. Remember at least the recent Ghosted with Armas and Evans.
'My Wife is a Hitman' is not a bad movie, it's just plain. Well, there is nothing in it that catches the eye, except that Kaley Cuoco is in an unusual role for her. And so - standard characters, standard situations, standard even action. He is not bad, by the way, just against the background of much brighter militants of recent years is nothing.
You can watch the tape, you can even get a certain pleasure from it, but the pleasure is one-time. The militant will fade from memory very quickly, being lost against the background of similar empty projects.
Emma and Dave decide to diversify their boring family life, playing an adult game with roleplay, when the spouses are presented to each other not by who they really are, but by random counters, who were brought together at the bar by a fatal incident. In fact, the original title of the picture is – “Role Play”.
In my opinion, the filmmakers could not decide what they are shooting: for comedy, the movie is not funny enough (or not funny at all), for drama – not enough heartbreaking moments (there are none), and as a full-fledged action movie in the spirit of “John Wick” adjusted for feminism, this film does not perceive. In the end, we have what we have: an easy movie about “my wife is a killer”. No more, no less.
The plot is linear, events develop as if on rails, and in principle during the viewing it will not be difficult to guess what will happen and even how it will end. In this sense, the writers cheated. I would like to say a few words about the notorious feminism: here we see a strong woman who does not do women’s work, and a faithful husband of an African-American who does not really know how to hold a weapon, and on his face there is always an expression of puppy affectionate devotion. The only serious opponent in the way of our killer turns out to be an elderly killer Bob, played by the famous, talented and charismatic actor Bill Nighy (may have seen him in the role of the ancient vampire Victor from the series of films “Another World”). But the episode with him is short, and then spy cats and mice and shooters did not impress me.
“My wife is a killer” is one of those films that does not harbor any secrets, it is like an open book, and read it or not – everyone decides for himself.

Role-playing gameKayley Cuoco - Jason Bourne from the world of professional killers? {Including voice-over laughter in the style of TBV}
At the time of writing the review, Kaley Cuoco, writing, is 38. She still has the best projects in the repertoire - The Big Bang Theory and voice acting in Harley Quinn. Although the series Flight attendant something caught a little in my memory. There seem to be more significant projects, but there she occasionally appears. You can see that the actress is still trying to get to the top of the movie Olympus, especially in big cinema.
But, unfortunately, closer to forty years it is difficult. Few women actually managed to do that. It either requires a really great acting talent, or luck/connection. The actress does not have either, but there is a desire and aspiration. And we love her for that. As I see it, she needs to try to play some not glamorous, not beautiful, and the role-antivariation of the previous. You know, older men usually start to succeed in the role of homeless people, some who have lost family, children, live on the outskirts in a trailer with a dog, not communicating with anyone - on this, but where in the role will be a woman Kaley Cuoco I would look. In general, the role of some inadequate, crazy little ladies I somehow sure she would have managed to play well.
In our movie, the main character is his wife, mother, someone else secret and murderous. Plus the plot of the picture is so worn out that we will not even dwell on it. Some 15 years ago, the tape would have looked much better, but since then so much film has leaked. Although if the series were staged with the same plot - it would be better, the characters could be a little deeper and wider to reveal, and in general a lot of things to show more.
Really in style and so on, our film resembles a series. If you did 10 hours like that, it would be fine. But selling the series under the guise of a full-fledged movie is a deception of the viewer. So the authors have to finish, by my count, another 8.5 hours. Where's my watch?

That's not a bad movie. But he could use more mystery. Too much in the first third opens to the viewer. We should have done more in the spirit of the Disappeared (2014) And so something similar to Killing Eve turned out, but the rank is lower.
In short, you can watch a movie if you think that there is nothing else to watch or laziness to look for something else.
When you see the phrase 'spy comedy', you expect the film to be a fun adventure in which a married couple overcomes new challenges for their marriage. But this story is not about My Wife is a Killer. Everything is much more boring here.
Emma (Kayley Cuoco) is quite often traveling for work, and her family has long been accustomed to this and treat it with understanding. Although the last time she managed to forget about the anniversary, what clearly upset her quiet husband Dave (David Oyelowo).
To make amends, Emma offers her husband to play role-playing games (the original title of the film Role Play) and pretend to be strangers who accidentally met in the bar of a fashionable hotel. Everything would be fine, but Emma works as a mercenary, and she would avoid appearing in public places, because she was recently hunted.
In general, the bundle looks really intriguing. Of course, we’ve seen such stories more than once (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Killers, Knight of the Day, Bounty Hunter and many, many others), but this pattern still works. And under the condition of well-tailored script, charismatic characters, funny dialogues, the viewer gets a good or even a great entertaining movie. Unfortunately, none of the above in this film.
So, Kaley Cuoco is not perceived as a mercenary. More like a slightly tired housewife. In this regard, David Oyelowo copes better: he is the only one who creates at least some funny situations and reacts vividly to, to put it mildly, unusual things for him. However, this does not make the film comedic.
The emphasis here is clearly in favor of a criminal drama - not even an action movie. There are scenes with shootings, fights and chases, but all this takes a quarter of the time. All the rest of the time, the characters endlessly clarify the relationship, and it is not only husband and wife who do it.
For some reason, the viewer should be interested in watching how Emma’s former mentor Gwen (Connie Nielsen) wants her best operative back. That's just Connie herself looks more like a middle manager than a notorious special forces officer. In this regard, Bill Nighy would look much better, but he appears here only in a cameo role. It turns out that feminism has reached the world of mercenaries.
Role Play is not a bad movie, but it deceives the audience and does not give what it promises. And that's pretty annoying. In this niche, it is better to pay attention to more successful work.
'My Killer Wife' or 'Role-playing' attracts mainly the main actress, Kaley Cuoco, known for 'The Big Bang Theory'. The actress is trying to demonstrate her talents to escape from the role of simple Penny, but so far with varying success.
The film's heroine, Emma, is at first glance a housewife, although she is not. The film begins with her surgery. And then you can immediately see the weak side of the film - the implementation of the "fighter" part, but we will move on to this a little later. Emma is like a wife, a mother, a manager who goes on business trips, and her husband... I don’t even remember the profession. A good family man, a loving father and husband.
Emma once again returns from a business trip and sees that the family has prepared a surprise for her - after all, she and her husband have a wedding anniversary, which she completely forgot! In the evening, the husband gives his wife a final gift - a costume of a depraved nurse, and the wife decides to offer - and let's meet at the bar as strangers? Will we play a role-playing game?
They meet in a bar, they are joined by an unknown man who in every possible way hints Emma that he knows what she is doing, and from there the more active part of the film begins.
To be honest, this film can be watched with your back to cooking or washing dishes. The first half of the movie was interesting to watch. There are a lot of things going on because you have to have an exhibition. Explain who Emma is, what she lives, who she communicates with, how she lives two lives. Plus, family relationships after seven years have become less exciting. And while you need to act out everyday situations - the film is fine! It’s not so bad, even when a stranger joins a couple in a bar and tries to piss Emma off with his jokes and words! But as soon as the action part begins, one can immediately see that the staging of active scenes was weak. Cuoco seemed not to fit into the role of a killer, it does not feel experience, does not feel mortal danger, does not feel physical training, no honed movements. Combat scenes surprisingly do not seem saturated with battles. They are boring and boring.
Due to the fact that the film is not theatrical scale, and in the picture of this scale really does not feel. There seems to be a murder, an investigation, a secret society, and a dark past, but after the middle of the film I wanted to squander, because there was more boring dialogue that should explain how the heroine came to what she came to. And these most boring dialogues are replaced by boring battle scenes, because of which it is unclear how Emma stayed in business at all.
I recommend watching only big fans of Cuoco or other actors involved, because even fans of this subgenre (former or current fighter faces old enemies) will be bored. Well, you can look, if there is nothing to cook.
'My wife is a hitman' is honestly bad, well, not a disaster of course, but he has three big flaws:
First, there is no comedy, except for the standard final phrases-jokes before the credits.
Secondly, there is no action movie, well, of course, except for three minutes of gluing the hand / head / table / hand / strangle and everything is over, all defeated.
Thirdly, there is no connected history and good music, which is the saddest thing.
God be with them with firefights... Kaley Cuoco recently became a mother, and not that the hero of the action movie, but the Bond girl she never was (although David Oyelowo would have “Jack Reacher” to have an idea of action).
The plot of the movie is quite intriguing and probably could be comical - Emma Brackett, having stood up on a task, must "lie low", but suddenly upsets her husband by forgetting the anniversary date and, to correct this, the Brackets decide to celebrate the anniversary by acting out a scene in a hotel (a kind of role-playing game), as if they are not familiar and their random meeting should instantly flare up romantic feelings, but there is a problem - other killer hunters do not sleep.
The lack of humor, as well as a large number of bland dialogues, absolutely nothing revealing and leading to nothing, pull this story straight to the bottom.
"My Wife is a Hitman" is not "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" and does not reach "My Boyfriend is a Killer." If you don’t expect anything from the movie, it will be worth watching for once.
Role Play (2023) struck me not only with its thrilling plot and stellar performance, but also with a brilliant twist on personality that I honestly didn’t even expect to see. It’s a film that masterfully plays with the very concept of interface – the masks we wear in public, the secrets we hide, and the exciting possibilities when those boundaries blur.
At first glance, Emma Brackett is a typical suburban wife and mother. She goes on a rendezvous at a hotel bar - a calculated role-playing game designed to revive the spark in her marriage. But that's where the interface cracks, exposing the hidden face, the killer's blade under polished plywood. This is a stunning revelation, executed with such chilling precision as Kaley Cuoco, that you will question everything you thought you knew about this woman.
And that's the beauty of Role Play. It's not just a story about marriage pushing boundaries, it's a high-octane thriller where the real danger lies within. The film dances brilliantly between the homely bliss of a picket fence and the cold efficiency of the affected area, blurring the lines between wife and murderer until you catch your breath and you're sure which interface to trust.
David Oyelowo as Emma's husband, Dave, plays very subtly, reflecting the viewer's path to discovery. His growing suspicions, desperate attempts to piece together the truth and inevitable confrontation are a masterclass of emotional vulnerability amid deadly secrets.
Directing the film is sharp, keeps you in suspense. Every scene, every line, is filled with hidden meaning, making you doubt everything you see. Is it a romantic gesture or a calculated move? A gentle hug or a death trap? It's the constant interplay between the ordinary and the unusual - what makes Role Play work like a motor.
Role Play is a reminder that appearances can be deceptive, that the most familiar face can harbor the most unexpected depths. It’s a thrilling ride through the maze of personality, a testament to the power of a good turnaround, and a movie that will stay with you long after the credits. So if you’re looking for a story that plays up to your expectations, a movie that dares to reinvent the thriller genre, then Role Play is a must-see movie. Just be prepared for your interfaces to be put to the test.
The extreme directorial work of Tom Vincent is the case when sometimes you include watching a fresh film, where one or another “actor of one role” starred from a poster (in this case Cuoco), and you wonder – will the performance be successful? And, maybe the lyceum will be able to move away from the long-term image of one character in a new picture? It is said that it is done, and we can state this fact that comedy fighters do not think to leave the radar of streaming platforms. “Role-playing game” (this is how this movie is called), a work with mediocre criticism on aggregators, was able to entertain for an hour and a half of timing and deliver its certain pleasure on the final credits. Not without clichés, grand pianos in bushes and archetypal heroes, of course, but I liked that I ended up watching.
Yes, the language does not turn to call “My wife...” a new word in the genre. The film “in itself” does not bring anything new to its segment, and works on already “centennial rails-stamps”, but here everything is decided by charming people in the frame, a fascinating script and a good plot in general. Comedy works, a constant smile on the face from dialogue-fights and puns. Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s guiding idea is that work is work, but family is more important than anything else. So to say, "for relatives and the yard shoot at point-blank range." Successful timing contributes to a good tempo rhythm: the picture does not get bored and quite fleetingly moves to the final credits.
The actor’s ensemble did not disappoint: it’s nice to see once again Kaley Cuoco, who is still in her prime. David Oyelowo is a clichéd husband and victim of circumstance. Bill Nighy in the background is a separate kind of enjoyment. Grandpa seems to be many years old, but in the frame feels still great. Operator work and installation are normal. Sound design and post-production ok, offset to Amazon.
"Role Play" has passed wide distribution and released online, so there are not enough stars from the sky and does not try to surprise you with its sweeping shape, which is not there. This is a pleasant, fun and light movie to watch with your soul mate. A universal story that seems to be secondary, but still delivers positive emotions. Enjoy your visit.
