'Get out of the darkness of your closet' Anna Makeeva’s debut film “Dangerous Sun” is a multiple winner of international festivals (14 awards, 20 official selections around the world: Russia, Australia, USA, India, Argentina, Uruguay, South Africa, China, Great Britain, Costa Rica, etc.).
Dangerous Sun is an original, fantastic art house full of secret meanings. This is a serious, art film aimed at an intellectual audience.
Being both a hidden allegory (“the desire to hide hidden fears”) and an allusion to modern society (“people living in big boxes”), the film tells about the inner struggle of the protagonist and answers the question: Is one in the field not a warrior (or yet not)?
Briefly about the plot and artistic component of the film:
The main character Philip (played by Nikolai German) is a resident of a dystopian society. According to the established rules, all people must live in closets for their own safety. Therefore, he and his family spend most of the time voluntarily in an enclosed space (each in his personal closet).
As in many dystopian stories, the “perfect world” is ruled by a Leader to whom everyone is unquestioningly obedient. For this role, a character nicknamed “Shepherd” is symbolically chosen. Having risen up the hierarchical ladder, he keeps everyone in strict control, conducts “compulsory rituals” and expels the undesirable from his community “to certain death.”
In general, this state of affairs suits everyone. Everyone except the main character. The day when the “seeds of doubt” sprout a “germ of hope” becomes decisive. Contrary to the established way of life, priorities and infantile fear (the desire to cram into the closet like a child, and not notice the problems), the main character opposes the system, against his own family and community residents to reach a new level of awareness and find answers to all questions.
In the film there is a color correction that affects perception. The original color scheme creates tension in the frame and personally reminds me of X-rays (green X-rays).
Separately, I would like to note the worthy play of actors (not only adults, but also a child), pleasant graphics, a non-trivial plot and qualitatively selected locations of shooting.
“How beautiful this world is, look at it.”
If you have ever wondered, where does the search for truth lead? This film definitely deserves your attention.
