Indistinct I wanted to make a review red, but still the film is not bad enough to discourage people from interest. If I had seen it in the second third, I would have.
The children of Cronenberg probably should have taken pseudonyms so that they would not be unwittingly compared with their father. But if Brandon was able to adequately protect the honor of the family and developed his style, nurtured on the family heritage, then Caitlin has not yet manifested herself and lost herself in the crowd of modern filmmakers.
At least in the second third of the film, this is the impression. The thesis comes to the surface: do not turn your back on white, even if he is your brother or sister, and the nobility of the minority is visible to the naked eye.
But then the situation suddenly changes, and the film declares: let’s stop cutting each other and unite against a common enemy. And finally, the third one happens.
This is the main problem of the film, it is unclear what exactly the author wanted to say. No, everything is quite transparent here, but the characters change so quickly that it is impossible not to get confused. It is clear that people in extreme situations may not behave well. The government and the media are false. We know that behind their smiles and courtesies lie very different ideals. That's it? Yes, and that's it!
The characters seem to be revealed, but you can not say that you sympathize with them or hate them. Everything is compressed, not deep enough. They spend more than an hour literally tormenting each other, which is why there is a desire for one of them to finally die, for all this to move from a dead point and end. They then kill each other, ask for forgiveness, and then change their shoes again, but all this is shown somehow indistinctly, uncertainly. You don’t always believe actors.
But it is most likely the fault of the unsuccessful script, not the director or actors, although the film began promisingly and had great potential. It remains to wish Caitlin Cronenberg to write his own script, and then there is a chance that we will see a worthy branch of the Cronenberg dynasty.
The film was not a mirror for me, I never saw myself. I can't tell you what this is about us. While racial inequality is far from a top priority in the film, let’s be honest that we’ve never had such a problem. It's not about us. We have our own cockroaches.
Otherwise, the problems raised in the film are really universal, but again, a rather weak script did not allow you to squeeze all the juice out of this plot.
In general, you can safely score a point for the fact that the authors stopped in time and did not promote the idea of the second third of the film, did not slide into modern single-cell vulgarity, otherwise it would turn out to be a really bad movie.
