Squaring the circle... By little means, to make fair and dishonest laws...
Good French cinema from the recognized master of the detective genre, Claude Chabrol. Of course, each picture of Chabrol, this is first of all an interesting story, which the director tries to convey to the viewer as best as possible. In this case, this is the story of two charming swindlers, who trade in ingenious machinations, while robbing hapless simpletons of businessmen, a middle man. Scammers of the extra-class usually worked on small things, playing on human weaknesses and vices. In fact, no one forces married men to jump into bed with a seductive stranger. But one day they decide to play big and break a solid jackpot, mentally realizing that the enemy is clearly not up to their teeth. What will lead to the collision with serious problems, you will see for yourself. But cunning and ingenuity have never let them down. As in all paintings of Chabrol, there is a subtle moral and instructive background. Our heroes were not greedy, they take only half, maybe so the author does not punish them in the end, but only a little scare, while pretty tickling our nerves.
You scare me, such an unbearable lightness.
- It's better than a little unbearable!
Determining the genre of the picture is quite difficult. There is a signature Shabrolev humor, and crime, and even drama, judging by the actors in the final. Present in the cinema and signature chips, from clearly striking to the viewer, to subtle hints, noticeable only to true connoisseurs of his work. The picture is full of multi-syllabic dialogues imbued with irony and humor. Heroes are connoisseurs of beauty and love to enjoy life. For example, Victor loves black caviar, Maurice loves Swiss fondue, and the crime boss Monsieur K tastes Puccini’s classic opera Tosca performed by Luciano Pavarotti. There were a lot of funny moments. From the ridiculous dialogue of two Negroes, to a particularly memorable scene with the middle finger-holding hero Cerro, who teases this pack of bandits. And of course, it is worth noting the magnificent cast. Watching such skilled virtuosos like Isabelle Huppert and Michel Cerrot play is a real pleasure. By the way, Huppert made seven joint paintings with Chabrol and the collaboration was very successful. Of the actors I note more, cheerful François Cluse as a simpleton financier.
I do not like this type, it is already a square circle!
