The 80-year-old Duchess of Lawndale tells a biographer about her life. The story of a young life begins in a brothel. It is there that she meets the anarchist Armand, with whom she will have a long close relationship. However, soon in her life will appear and the elderly Duke of Lawndale.
Peter Ustinov creates a touching adventure picture built on the confrontation of two male types - a convinced anarchist of the early twentieth century and a real gentleman. Paul Newman and David Niven play these characters beautifully.
It should be noted that the role of the Duke of Lawndale performed by David Niven acquires special colors. As a man of the system, he at the same time manifests himself as a courageous man, devoid of prejudice and able to maintain dignity in the most difficult situations. Londale's phrases performed by Niven become iconic:
I don't approve of gratitude. I'm dealing with him too often.
- The amazing thing about people is that they can’t understand themselves until it’s too late to change. I wonder if I would be so attached to you if you weren’t so attached to someone else.
