Sometimes a person, having literally everything, still remains unhappy, because the only thing he can not really gain is love. However, as if grasping the last chance, a person can find true love, but to keep it, you may have to give up the best benefits. In this situation was the main character of the romantic comedy “Arthur”.
Synopsis A slacker, a drunkard and just a millionaire named Arthur is only engaged in the fact that every day he rides his old car through the streets of New York, frames prostitutes and endlessly has fun. But his life soon changes when his father threatens to shut him off unless Arthur marries the daughter of a local industrialist. The situation takes an even steeper turn when Arthur falls in love with a waitress Linda from a poor neighborhood in Quincy.
At first glance, the performance of the actors made a positive impression. Each of the actors successfully entered the image of the character performed by him or her. However, the excessive comedy component turned what was happening on the screen into an easy circus, which made some moments look unnatural. However, there was an actor I would single out above all else. This, of course, John Gilgud, who played the role of Arthur Hobson’s educator, who helps and mentors the main character in everything and, we can say, replaces his real father.
Steve Gordon directed a classic Hollywood romantic comedy on the theme: “Can money buy love?” I would like to highlight the dynamics of the film. The action takes place spontaneously and is not prolonged. The director also reveals Arthur as a big kid, who is so spoiled by money that he simply knows no other life than fun and spree. However, the romantic line, although it looked beautiful, but too naive, and the viewer will immediately guess how the story of Arthur will end.
Scenario I will not go into the details of the plot again, but will only dwell on the issues that were raised. The first is the relationship between wealth and love, i.e. whether money can buy love. The main character before meeting Linda “buyed” love, but it was only a game. The meeting changed Arthur’s habitual way of life. Second, there is the question of “who decides our destiny.” Before Arthur fell in love, his fate was ruled by money. But, having found love, the main character tries to escape from this tangle, although he is afraid, because in real life he simply does not know anything. These are the main topics that should be presented in the dramatic spectrum.
Result In my opinion, Arthur is an amateur movie. Those who love romantic comedies with satirical situations will love the movie. But if you value smart humor above all else, I wouldn’t recommend the movie. However, to judge you.
