After the death of his father, Ren and his mother moved to live with relatives in a small town. And all would be fine, but it turns out loud music and dancing are banned by local government completely. And for high school students, such prohibitions of death are similar.
I tried to watch the film for two years after it was heavily advertised in Guardians of the Galaxy. And finally
For those who, like me, was in the tank, I tell you: the cult hit of the 80s about dancing, love and rebelliousness. Based, among other things, on real events, a few years before filming in an American village, dancing was banned for as long as 90 years, until the local youth was not outraged.
The plot frame is a typical story about a newcomer to the city. Which stands out as a peacock and all attempts to fit into society fail completely. And of course, the first girl of the school will fall in love with him, and her bully boyfriend will not like this arrangement. In the 80s, such films were shot in packs.
But the history of the confrontation between young people and adults / church is very interesting. The main ideological opponent here is the local pastor. An ordinary good man who sincerely cares about residents and morality and just so coincidentally that he considers dancing a bad thing. Not a villain in general. But he set up the city so that cops write fines for music in the car without talking, and some especially diligent citizens even run to burn free-thinking books. It would seem that this could shine a light on schoolchildren in their pathetic attempt to get permission to spend the prom with music? That is, nothing (except the revolution and the pogroms). But no, seeing the wave of outrage, the pastor realized he was wrong. That's all the great opposition. However, the movie actually teaches the right thing, it is better to solve problems legally. In addition, thanks to this moment in the film there is a funny scene where GG on the city council proves with the help of the Bible that dancing is God-pleasing:
By the way, it was here that I realized that in the films of the 80s women were often beaten. And it's in the youth melodrama, for a moment! And in general, the movie in the background is very disrespectful to everyone: parents do not respect children, men do not respect women, teachers do not respect books, cops do not respect citizens, etc. The main characters are all in white. At times like this, you feel very good about how public morality and the boundaries of what is permissible change.
From the young stars, a very nice Sarah Jessica Parker is seen here - it was nice to see. And the film then served as a great impetus to the career of Kevin Bacon - he is just amazing how good! Especially impressed by the scene, when he was finally pinned down and he freaked out, came in the night to some warehouse and there in a wild dance poured out all the accumulated anger and aggression. I’ve probably never seen him so beautiful and energetic anywhere else.
In general, today this film can hardly be impressed, but within the framework of "mainstream hits of the past" is very curious.
