A soul movie. The picture turned out to be strong and very touching. American director originally from Washington Peter Horton has a track record of work in TV series and films, but most often he is remembered by viewers because he was the ex-husband of the famous American film star Michelle Pfeiffer.
39; The Cure' Horton's best directorial work and his pride. The drama pierces to the depths of the soul and reveals a sad, elegiac story, so subtle and deep that everything that happens looks with a fading heart.
We see the story of a little boy, Dexter, who was once given a blood transfusion and then discovered AIDS. The child has become terminally ill and is raised by a single mother. In addition to his terrible illness, he is bullied at school by those who think that if he has AIDS, he is gay. Dexter lives in a real hell, but a new friend will help him forget, who decides to cure him. Boys learn about a doctor in New Orleans, run away from home and swim to him on the Mississippi River. . .
Your heart is bleeding as you watch this story. This is a life-affirming movie, and before its story of a terminally ill child, all other problems immediately fade into the background. The film was shot atmospherically and with deep thought. The viewer is waiting for an incredible story, looking with a sad smile, and I wanted to cry all the time.
The young duo was played by Brad Renfro and Joseph Mazzello. And at that time there were still children, but such good young actors were good. On the set, it is as if magic reigns, and as if we were watching not a movie, but someone’s real story.
Dextor played by Joseph Mazzello is impossible to forget, and this kind and pure boy is the soul of this film. A sad fate has developed for actor Brad Renfro, who played Eric - a friend, as if the medicine itself in this story. This actor died very early, which is a shame. He could have an interesting life and an acting career.
This film is about the most important thing: about the desire to just live, about friendship, dreams and the fragility of ourselves. The movie is special, and personally I remember and highlight it.
'Medicine' is a 1995 American drama. The result is a good picture and even deeper than it seems at first glance. I love her, and she deserves attention, as well as a positive assessment.
Did you have a nightmare?
- No, no.
- What's the matter?
- It happens to me sometimes... When I wake up and it's dark. Many people believe that we go to heaven.
- And what?
- I often dream of the universe and think: what if there is nothing there? I try to look as far into this darkness as I can in my dream, but I see nothing but the stars of this universe, but they have a cold light, they do not warm. Sometimes... When I wake up in the dark, I get really scared that I'm already there and I'll never come back.
If a person cannot be cured, it means that he cannot be helped.
Children are such fabricators. I remember when I was a little girl, I believed that by creating simple rules, we could make the world a better place. And Eric tried to find a cure to save his best friend from an incurable disease.
Very touching and kind film. It's very sad, but bright.
Yes, even if you add a lot of sugar to a nasty herbal broth, it will still be nasty. So, it would seem, no matter how much you try to breathe and rejoice before death, you will still die. But happy.
I don’t know how much Eric does for his little friend. He just did what his heart told him. That's what children usually do, and the cure was found. It is stronger than merciless disease, stronger than poisoned blood, stronger than death. This is friendship.
Peter Horton, the former husband of Michelle Pfeiffer herself, is included in the cohort of so-called television or serial filmmakers. On television, he invests most of his talent as an actor, but quite often finds himself in the status of director and producer. But there were times when Peter Horton found a job in feature films. Probably will not take for his full debut fantastic comedy “Amazon on the moon” 1987, there for the director was responsible for five people, including Joe Dante, who shot in 1984 “Gremlins”, and John Landis, who provided the audience with the comedy “Switch places” in the 83rd. But a full-fledged and, of course, independent debut of Peter Horton should be considered the drama “The cure”, which was released in 1995.
The picture was shot on the script of Robert Kuhn, who attracted attention thanks to the comedy “Nerves on the limit” (1991). But, as you understand, with “The Medicine” Kuhn radically changes the genre and has now written a drama. She talks about how eleven-year-old Dexter (Joseph Mazzello) is bullied by his peers at school. To all of them, Dexter is a “faggot” because they think only “faggots” can get AIDS. A terrible disease struck the boy after a blood transfusion Dexter’s only outlet in communication is the neighbor’s boy Eric (Brad Renfro), who is two years older than him. Eric himself suffers from the heavy nature of his mother Gail (Diana Scaruid) and begins to communicate not only with Dexter, but also with his mother Linda (Annabella Shiorra), who turns out to be a much kinder woman. Young buddies decide to find a cure for Dexter, but you and I know that the cure for AIDS ... I don't want to be sad.
Because the whole "Medicine" movie is imbued with that feeling. It’s sad when you look at Dexter and Eric’s sincere friendship, sad when Linda comes home and looks at the children through tears, even though she tries to hide it, sad that boyish ideas and fantasies that are very noble are doomed to failure. Very sad. And only the holy faith of friends that in this world it is possible to recover from any disease, it would be only a desire, causes absolute delight in their actions. Yeah, they're just boys, they're just kids, but they didn't give up, and for that, Dexter, and especially Eric, thank you very much. Their journey in search of a cure in the genre of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn should not leave anyone indifferent. And at the same time, I would like to note the work of the cameraman Andrew Dintenfass and the composer of the painting Dave Grusin, who literally immerse themselves in the atmosphere of this “road movie”, and the latter even received an Emmy nomination for his melody for “The Medicine”.
Of course, there would not be so much sensuality in the film and it would not give so much emotion, if not for the acting. The roles of Dexter and Eric were played by Joseph Mazzello and Brad Renfro, respectively (unlike the film, they have a difference of not two, but one year). They showed a real friendship of boys who are not at all similar in character to each other, but who found something in each other that holds them together and together they were ready to move mountains. Scenes with pranks in the hospital is a huge confirmation of this. It’s funny, if it weren’t so sad... Mazzello in the 93rd left himself a memory of the classics of fiction “Jurassic Park”, and Renfro in the 94th showed a strong game in the criminal drama “The Client”, it’s a pity that Brad ruined his life with drugs at the age of 25 years. Annabella Shiorra, who in my humble opinion deserved at least nominations, and Diana Scaruid played their roles perfectly. Their heroines were as different as Dexter and Eric, which gives the film a depth of characters. In general, thank you for a couple of strong emotional scenes associated with Eric and Gail.
At present, the dramatic film “The Medicine” is rarely mentioned by anyone, but it is still recommended for viewing. It contains a tragedy associated with the most terrible disease, killing a huge number of people every year. But in addition, the filmmakers touched upon another important topic – the theme of real, strong friendship among children, as well as the theme of motherly love. And in the end, everyone wants to wish great health and such a brave and noble soul, as some of the characters of this worthy film.

How long have you been crying since watching the movie? If you never believe that movies can make you cry, then this movie is for you. This is a vivid example of how a good picture can do without big budgets, any high-profile film awards and mega-star names. There is a soul in this film, so there is everything.
Amazingly sincere and unusually vivid story about friendship and death, about devotion and cowardice, about faith and love.
The film in the first place bribes the honest and incredibly strong play of young actors, especially the role of the boy who played Eric (Brad Renfro) such a sad inevitability of eyes often does not bring anything good (which actually happened) a bright memory of Brad!
The plot has been worked out to the smallest details and I will not be afraid of pathos - the brilliant finale of this creation will not leave anyone indifferent, you will plunge into the world of hope and sadness that will remain with you after the final credits. You will believe in friendship and will definitely change, you will be better, more, kinder.
Be sure to watch this picture to live even brighter, appreciate friends more and... often people just need to BE, this is enough.

I’ve never written a review, although I’m real 'meloman' in terms of movies. I was preparing for the session, but instead I write a review. I came across the film completely by accident. He made my evening. Turned on the film so that he just walked in the background, at first thought even to turn it off, but he quickly interested me. The theme of friendship has always been central to me, above love, family and the like.
The piercing bond of quite ordinary boys, one of whom is terminally ill, and the other is trying to find a cure for a new best friend. Together, they commit crazy and stupendous acts, which any adult, if he goes, will take a very long time to think about the plan of action and weigh all the pros and cons. And for this boy, only the goal is important, and his sick friend does not interfere, because he sees real support.
I was also impressed by Dexter’s mother. She allowed Eric to be friends with her son. The contrast of mothers in this film deserves special attention. After watching, there was a great desire to call my mother, because she is the person who will do everything for her child and will never betray him.
Sentimental, touching, tragic, but very light.
Everyone wants to have a true friend in life, who, despite all the shortcomings, will be with you until the very end, this friendship will be the best medicine, even though it is not the best outcome, it will make you happy. . .
First, I watched the film because of my favorite and now deceased actor of my childhood - Brad Renfro. Second, a film about children and friendship is what I love.
This is a heartwarming story about the sincere friendship of two boys. Eric and Dexter. At first, they did not get along very well with each other, but everything changes when Eric, who had not previously been able to protect himself from the “baiting” of his peers, boldly stands up for Dexter in a conflict situation. Eric’s mother is strongly opposed to this friendship, but her son is not stopped by this attitude. Especially since he has before his eyes the ideal of his mother – Dexter’s mother is kind, sweet, positive. And Eric can easily get a slap for the slightest fault.
Eleven-year-old Dexter developed an illness - he contracted AIDS due to a blood transfusion in the hospital. Dexter is not even so important medicine - he is already accustomed to the idea that his blood is "poisoned" - it is important to him that there is a real friend. And he gets that friend. Eric tries his best to help Dexter - treats him with sweets, and decoctions of herbs. As a result, the children come across an article in the newspaper about the doctor who invented the miraculous medicine. Friends decided to find him, and, secretly from their parents, go to New Orleans along the Mississippi River.
Very touching film. As they say, friends are known in trouble, and the viewer can see this with his own eyes. Not every adult knows how to be friends like that. Trouble strengthens friendship even more.
The film is kind, bright, pushing to think about true friendship.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), is a deadly disease whose treatment currently does not exist. The first cases of AIDS and HIV infection were recorded in the early 80s of the twentieth century in the United States among homosexual men. According to estimates of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS in 2002, more than 3 million people died of AIDS worldwide, about 5 million were infected, and the total number of people living with HIV exceeded 42 million.
In 1995, the talented director Peter Horton made the film “The Cure” on such a acute social problem as AIDS. Despite the fact that the film is more than eighteen years old, it is still relevant today. The vast majority of people (especially in Russia) know little about AIDS. They avoid and fear people suffering from this terrible disease.
The main roles were brilliantly performed by Brad Ranfro (Eric) and Joseph Mazzello (Dexter). The amazing, amazing performance of two little acting talents inspired me. The film touches to the core, making you think about really important things. This is, of course, a film about friendship. But in addition, the film presents a variety of other topics: relationship with parents, ignorance of society, problems in school, compassion, mutual help.
Eric is a smart guy. Brave and honest. Unselfish and loyal.
Dexter is a gentle, sweet, vulnerable child. Fragile and touching. Sincere.
They met, and soon realized that fate brought them together for a reason. For Dexter, Eric was a gift. For Eric Dexter was the best and brightest memory.
Hoping to cure his best friend, Eric comes up with all sorts of attempts to heal Dexter: either buy him chocolate, then make all sorts of decoctions. Seeing the news in the newspaper that there is still a chance for healing, Eric decides to go to New Orleans on the Misissippi River, taking Dexter with him. "You want to get well, don't you? You want your mom to be happy, don't you? On the way they are waiting for drama, adventure, tears and happiness. Looking at the sincere friendship of these two boys, it is impossible to restrain emotions, because we know in advance how the film will end. Although I wanted to believe until the last moment that a little more and everything will be sure to be fine, there will certainly be a cure, and the boys will always be friends. The boys will be friends forever. This is the warmest and brightest movie I have ever seen. I think that this movie should be watched. This is a very strong and moving picture.
“Many believe that we go to heaven. I often dream of the universe and think, what if there is nothing there? I try to look as far into this darkness as I can, but I see nothing but the stars in this universe. They have cold lights and they don't warm. When I wake up in the dark, I get very scared that I’m already there and will never come back.
First of all, I want to note the wonderful acting of all the participants of this film, especially the older teenager. I don’t use the names of actors – we should see their characters in movies, not people from show business. The plot of the film is very interesting, like nothing supernatural, but there are adventures, ideas, and more importantly - the soul.
As for the parents, their opposition gives the film a piquancy. This is not so rare when a mother raising a child alone, scores on him. Fear of AIDS leads to unpredictable reactions. As for the calm attitude of the mother of a sick boy to his escape - she was worried, but punishing a child who has only a few months left - a normal person will not do this, she did not do this.
A film from the category of those who warm the soul, squeeze a tear, make you understand that there are many beautiful things in life and that being in sound mind and good health is a sin to complain about fate, especially when there are close people nearby. This film shows both the tragedy of the mother and the unselfishness of the teenager - it is clear that he was more needed by this boy, but never allowed himself to think about it in this way. This is an example of the kind of friendship and affection that only children are capable of, and 13 years old is, of course, a child. A sad ending like this always strikes your heart and makes you a better person, so the 13-year-old helped himself with that. And his action with a sneaker could not but cause a smile, because people do not always smile when they are happy, but such an action causes a bright warm feeling mixed with hopelessness - which reflected her smile.
In general, the film should be watched, there is no pathos in it, a lot of sincere scenes. As for the maturity of the speeches of the heroes, I will not agree, just you apparently forgot yourself at that age, plus the kids are smart, and therefore more advanced than their peers. The film is made masterfully and much more vital than many dramas that have received greater recognition.
“Medicine” is a wonderful film about life and death, about maternal love, about childhood and, of course, about friendship. The main character, Eric, who feels different from others, grows up with an emotionally cold mother, as if offended by his son because of the divorce from his father. He feels unnecessary until he meets the neighbor’s boy, who is neglected due to an incurable illness. Quickly becoming friends with Dexter, Eric observes a completely different relationship in a small family of neighbors, where he has both a place and warmth.
For children, the main task is to find a cure for Dexter. Heroes are pure and adamantly believe in miracles, as befits children. Following the news in the newspaper about the doctor who finally found the cure, the boys secretly embark on a long journey. It will bring Dexter and Eric a lot of adventures and dangers, but also make their friendship not just childish, but real.
The actors are so wonderful that you forget that they are actors and you empathize, especially since the second half of the movie, every minute! Especially wonderful is Brad Renfro (Eric), who conveys the complex range of feelings of a teenager almost elusively and very sincerely. I also liked Annabella Shiorra, who played Dexter’s mother. This is, in my opinion, the most profound character in the film. Often saw events through her eyes and imagined how she went crazy reading the note, or what she was thinking during such a dialogue:
Dexter is punished because he violated my prohibition not to eat sweets.
- How long will he be punished? We wanted to play the submarine.
- Dexter, honey, come downstairs! I came up with a new punishment. You should go play with Eric. Be careful on the water!
It is difficult to divide this film into components: script, scenery, acting, footage and music ... Neither during the viewing nor after you want to think about the details. This is a whole piece of life, sometimes cruel, in which children get sick and die, but also so beautiful, where there is a place of true love and friendship, where children’s dreams are trying to realize with all their heart and truly believing in a miracle.
The picture leaves a piercing-pitching feeling. After watching you forget about the troubles, small problems fall like husks. I want to press to the heart of the most dear and beloved people, because the fact that they are nearby is the most real and worthwhile thing in life!
