A fairy tale with an Estonian accent This film-fairy tale is not like Soviet films, Czechoslovak, or the works of the DEFA studio. “Silver yarn Carolina” has its own sound, with a light Baltic accent.
There is a plot, but it is not clearly traced, because of the confused shooting and blurred directing, it is not always clear what is happening, some stream of consciousness. The situation is saved by a slight irony that permeates the entire film and the actors who worked together and tried.
The main character - Princess Caroline turned out very nice. Capricious and cocky, but cheerful and determined. Before us is not a beautiful blonde, but a young dark girl with dark curls, cute and natural, not averse to flirtatious and savvy. Unfortunately, this is the only role in the film of Estonian Hungarian-born Catherine Bagala. The prince isn't canonical, either. He wears a beard and likes to tease a wilful princess. Lovers of the fabulous genre will be pleased with all sorts of wild, watery, mermaids, enchanted wolves and incomprehensible personalities that attract travelers of the devil knows where.
The highlight of the film is the melodic songs of composer Olav Echal appearing here and there, especially the song of the magic spinning wheel. The film is dubbed and the songs are translated into Russian, but the consonance of the Estonian speech was preserved, besides, almost all the actors speak and sing with a pleasant, Baltic pronunciation.
Visually, Carolina Silver yarn is also beautiful. I liked the pictures of nature, something pristine, Slavic. Another important thing in the film is the costumes. And this is the obvious luck of the costume designer Mare Reidma, such stingy at first glance outfits in the style of the early Middle Ages, with an ethnic bias, but look at how many interesting textures and details, all sorts of fibulas, bracelets, waist jewelry, Carolina even has a small knife on her belt.
In a word, the fairy tale of Estonians turned out to be unusual, poetic and beautiful. The confusing presentation of the material spoils the impression a little, but young viewers may not notice this, all the misunderstandings are completed by the imagination. Carolina Silver yarn is a story for calm, balanced, romantic children (rather girls). My parents will not be bored either.
P.S. For those interested, I recommend you to look at the photos from the set, the kitchen is always interesting, and especially when a fairy tale is created.
