This is definitely one of the best films in Casper Van Dean’s 20-year career! Let’s be honest: this is not about an outstanding artist, not even about a successful and weighty figure in business. So what's the problem? Let's figure it out.
So, most of his projects, as it is not surprising with such a resume, are built on his figure and authority. Movies with Casper Van Dean, like the current films with Nicholas Cage, can be distinguished into a separate genre. He simply pulls the blanket over himself, which once again demonstrates his inconsistency and arrogance absolutely from scratch. For some reason, this is not happening here. The cast here is not very wide, but that does not mean that we are waiting for 90 minutes of Van Ding in the frame. Of course, his role is the main, but just as important is the main female role and the role of the main villain. Frankly speaking, he is absolutely, in my opinion, a driven, ensemble actor: without the support of even inexperienced, as in this film, but knowledgeable partners, he looks simply faded.
Second, an unrealistic opponent. If this argument was not a negative factor in the actor’s first, and alas the last, successful project “Star Troops”, given the genre of fiction as such, the subsequent “devils in the flesh”, pseudohistorical faces and wilderness creations are simply ridiculous. The heroes of “Chase after Death” are ordinary Americans without a claim, do not possess superhuman powers, suffer like all normal people, subjectively react to stressful circumstances.
A balance of dynamics and drama. I will say right away, in my opinion, the combination of drama and action film in one picture is very important to make proportional. Reject tearful, but not bringing anything to the development of the plot (for example, Vasya Pupkin hugs his wife/girlfriend before going to wet thirty-three heroes who suddenly switched to the “dark side”).
Thus, we seem to have a TV action movie that does not depart from the main canons, but on the other hand, a tightly knit picture without plot “congestion”, budget flaws, but with a competent team that managed to correctly prioritize.
