Pretty unfinished, but still nice indie sketch This is the work of Jack Perez according to the script of James McManus, who also starred in the film as an accomplice of the main gangster of the city of Santiago. Before that, McManus also wrote for Perez - the film ' Big Emptiness' (1997). Only if 'Emptiness' is quite the bottom level even for lovers of comedy indie cinema, then their second project is already quite watchable.
In principle – much is clear here: where and why legs grow – in the late 80s scenarios about the loss of identity and the associated tragicomics actively put many independent authors – whether Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch or the Coen brothers – is not important. A few impressions from reading Kafka, a few impressions from 'Dead Man' Jarmusha - and now, the writer is already trying to synthesize something of his own, small and unfinished, but on a familiar topic.
The original film is titled ' Cockroach' - ' The Cockroach'. And actually this cockroach is played by the inimitable Eric Roberts. In the story, he fled from a large American city somewhere in the Mexican wilderness to be homeless and learn to write novels, being alone. But nothing comes to his mind and he just gets drunk in a bar every day and then sleeps in an abandoned hut. Next, he turns under the arm of bandits who, under the guise of work, want to blame the murder of a person on him and kill him too.
In general, this is a parable about a person from nowhere who, at the expense of unfamiliar people, tries to become someone. The topic is familiar, familiar means, but the implementation is too limited in everything. However, this understatement and incompleteness rather adds charm, but integrity spoils.
In general, this is the perfect movie to watch in a tired state at night, and then vaguely remember as something small and incomprehensible.
