History of the Harlem Renaissance It was as if several of William Henry Johnson’s paintings had come to life and the Harlem renaissance of fine art had gained access to film screens. As for the content content, it fully corresponds to the literary creations of Elmore Leonard. First of all, we clearly draw several characters, later twist the intrigue tied to illogical love, gangsters and big money, and soon make the characters find themselves in the most interesting situations. All this gives the tape a grotesque and removes possible accusations of stereotyping, although the characters are very ordinary.
Forrest Whitaker plays here a kind of wise and educated religiously young man. He takes care of his soul and honors all the canons, only being next to the beauty immediately yields to her and is under the hood of her charms. The latter is played by Robin Givens. This charming woman, by the way, the ex-wife of Mike Tyson, in “The Fury of Harlem” turns out to be a real lady in red – sexy, attractive and understandable. Her aggressive gangster lover will be played by Buj Jol, who turns out to be a real monster - a cold-blooded killer. Baja is somewhat reminiscent of the hero of the comic book “Sin City” Manut – the same unbounded force multiplied by a completely cynical understanding of life. And there will be a gangster in love with his dog Easy money performed by Danny Glover and a brothel abbot disguised as a woman (Zakes Mokae). Isn't it a motley company? I completely forgot the main ingredient - the star in those years Gregory Hines in the role of a scammer. The punch in which you have to mix the interests of these guys will be very core. Only a stylish scene of Robin Givens seducing the inexperienced hero Forrest Whitaker will remain on the surface.
And seriously, despite the obvious entertainment message, the film is not in vain entered the top list of the Cannes Festival. This is a stylization, a nice sketch about Harlem life, love and death, true love. By the way, too much intricacies reminded me of True romance - the final cross-ganfight and perfect, and as if written out by a pimple teenager story of idealistic love. When Robin Givens was offered a foot massage for a man in the final, I was convinced that young Quentin was apparently inspired by this picture.
