In 1988, quite unexpectedly, John Waters (one of the most peculiar American directors) released the musical film “Hairspray”. Over time, the movie gets a cult status (like most of John’s films).
Director Adam Schenkman (Wedding Trouble, Hurry to Love) decided to remake it. It's a bloody strange and risky act. The difference between the original and the remake is almost 20 years. John shot on a small budget. Adam has the opposite situation, a giant budget and stars of the first magnitude (Travolta, Walken, Pfeiffer).
And another key point - John (mostly) danced to popular hits of the 50-60s. Shankman sings invented songs on his own. I love Waters, of course, but still Adam coped with his task, made a nice remake. I tried my best not to embarrass John. The musical turned out to be very bright, funny. With a trench layer.
What if Waters personally blessed Shankman? By the way, John can be seen as a pervert on the street (about 3 minutes, i.e. the very beginning of the film). If this is the case, we will not criticize. The only point is that the timekeeping would be slightly trimmed (rolled unnecessary sketches).
Nikki Blonsky is the main character, of course. The debutante burned to the full program. Ricky Lake, who played Tracy for Waters, can be proud of her. Absolutely deserved nomination for the Golden Globe. It's a charming pimp.
Now it's time to answer the most heartbreaking question - why does Travolta play fat mommy? Because Devine, guys. I don't like Travolta much (he loses to Devine, don't even argue), but it's a very brave move on the part of the actor. Would DiCaprio accept such a role? I don't know, but Travolta signed up. Well done.
What musical? Someone writes about a fat girl who broke into TV and became a star. Not exactly. It's about love. John Waters believes in love (yes, director of Pink Flamingos and Women's Problems, ahee-hee). White, black, yellow, green, thin, fat — spit. Love and be loved. That's the point. John was right.
Musicals are a separate category of films that find their viewers where no one expects them. This has happened to me, but I will tell you that not all films in this genre can interest me. Something is strong and something is not. I'll take this movie to 50/50.
Of the pluses, I will say that he is kind, funny, to some extent interesting and funny. To the minuses - template, fat Travolta and weak acting. The cast is then selected with taste, but the actors play to the back. Efron, Marsden, Walken, Pfeiffer – just listen to these names. But they didn't spark.
The songs are fun, the dances are good, but somehow it didn’t catch on. I just look at the screen and it’s predictable. You know what will happen to the characters, too. Even someone who kisses, even that. Travolta in a woman's suit is terrifying, but why not? The old man likes to act in bad movies, so why not play a lady with a thick layer of makeup.
In general, kinzo is funny and can cheer you up, but if you love the musical genre, then it may not hook you. It will not cause you a strong sense of happiness, and intrigue too, but it can please you with dances and songs. And yes, Michelle is not getting old, the sun is mine.
Watch some good movies!
Every day is like an open door.
Every night is like a fantasy.
Every sound is like a symphony.
Good morning, Baltimore.
And one day I'll be on stage.
And the world will suddenly know.
Baltimore and me.
Oh, that movie totally amazed me. And it's not only in the amazing acting of actors, and not in amazing songs, and not even in a sincere and funny fat girl - the main character of the comedy. No, no, no. The point here is in this charming atmosphere of the city, quiet and sometimes slightly cramped streets of Baltimore.
A bit about the actors:
As mentioned earlier, Nikki Blonsky’s cute fat, simple girl shakes me. Her songs and dances cannot but make her smile. In the role of the villain we have an incomparable beauty - Michelle Pfeiffer. There's nothing to say. Oh, and Amanda Bynes? It was so unusual to see her as a dummy and just a little girl.
Plot:
The main action takes place in Baltimore. A girl with a very unusual appearance has great potential and great goals. And rest assured, she will stop at nothing until she gets what she wants. Along the way, it meets such important problems of humanity as race, as well as discrimination on the basis of appearance. What would she say to that? I know what's right and what I want. Now go ahead!
Whether it’s fair or not, I’m putting this film at 10 because it’s very funny and the songs are really wonderful!
10 out of 10
A film that changes the standards set by show business. Even if you sing and move like Michael Jackson and weigh over 50kg, you’re on the blacklist. Sorry baby.
But the whole film, oddly enough, we watched a cute, cheerful lump, which every now and then moves its implacable ass., dreams of a role in a dance TV show and the love of a pretty boy. It would seem that the collapse should come to all her dreams, about which she was never hinted at, or even directly told. But desires and dreams are stronger than common sense, they helped our main character, and even a bit of ingenuity and perseverance. That’s the main thing in this life, to go boldly after your dreams, because if Tracey listened to her mother, she would remain nobody and nothing.
I really liked the main character, a little stubborn, a little out of it. Tracey is always cheerful, it would seem that this person simply does not perceive all the negativity of society, which many would like to wish in our time. She is such a ray of happiness, warming everyone around.
As for the secondary characters, let’s start with the main character’s best friend, Penny. A stupid girl who should have gone mad long ago with the strangeness and piety of her mother. But she is holding on or just her brain does not understand a single word that she is told.
The handsome one Tracy is in love with, Link Larkin. This is the most typical character of such films, handsome, sings, dances, meets the daughter of the channel manager, on which their shows are played. And all for your career. Everything is standard, it would seem, but suddenly it turns out that he can be hooked not only by connections, but by a simple and incendiary dance. And as they say, rushed ... he noticed her and even invited her to the show.
Tracy's mom, Edna, it's just something. My first reaction was wild laughter, when in this immense body I recognized John Travolta, to be honest, just a low bow for this role.
Tracy's father, Wilbur, is not of this world. It is very well characterized by one of his phrases: & #34; After 5 years I realized that you were flirting with me.
Velma and her daughter are typical manipulators who unfortunately do not always get what they deserve for their actions, as in this picture.
It is impossible to bypass the “colored” characters of this musical. People changing stereotypes and fighting for their place in the sun. Their dancing is an expression of freedom in everything.
In general, the film is very much liked, to his favorite introduced, may review in old age. A good robot director, screenwriter and choreographer, at first glance, there is nothing to complain about. I recommend watching in the same friendly company as the atmosphere of the film. And take the example of Tracy and shake your buns when watching, because the music sounds incendiary.
I am always very careful about watching such films, but I decided to look at many tips. I was not disappointed!
This is the most typical American musical film. And even the main problem is “super-American”. But it's so well done. There is not a drop of the favorite American vulgarity and pretentiousness. At first glance, you expect to see the cheap tinsel of cloudless American life, but as you watch it, you realize that there is something more to it. The scriptwriters worked incomparably on the dramaturgy of the tape.
Song musical drama incredibly fits into the plot and plot of the film. And “Good Morning, Baltimor” is, of course, the unparalleled work of Blonsky, and directors, and dance directors, and even editors, as we clearly see a beautiful audio-visual editing. I am not afraid to call this number the quintessence of the entire film.
Nikki Blonsky fits perfectly into the role of Tracy! And John Travolta? Who's to say he's not perfect here? And the main thing is that it doesn’t look cheap, disgusting, as is often the case in such films. Play Travolta in the film in principle does not require any comment – bravo! Michelle Pfeiffer thanks for the surprise and charm! Even young Zac Efron is not inferior to the experienced composition of the musical.
The film "Hairspray" is very self-sufficient and made very qualitatively in the framework of this genre, professionally. It would not be quite right for everyone to advise this picture, since the genre is very specific and definitely not for everyone, but for those who like “songs-dances” and life-affirming positive – welcome to Baltimore!
10 out of 10
I will say right away that musicals are one of my favorite genres in cinema, but, nevertheless, I do not watch them often because they are rarely released. I haven’t heard of “Hairspray” to my shame, since it was not awarded any awards and was released when I didn’t yet understand the beauty of this genre and ignored new films in this direction. But as soon as I found out about it, I really wanted to see it. There was no limit to my disappointment and now I will try to explain why.
One of the pluses I counted here is the acting. It is, of course, exaggerated, but, nevertheless, fits well into the general context of what is happening, but still does not save it from complete failure.
I also liked the hairstyles and costumes, which are also exaggerated, but still conveyed the atmosphere of the time.
The disadvantages include almost everything else. The music and dance here, in general, not so bad, their only drawback is monotony. For the first half an hour I liked them, everything was fun and incendiary, but then it quickly got boring, because all the songs and dances are made in the same manner and do not differ from each other. I was very tired in an hour and a half.
But most importantly, this is the main idea of the film. What it is, according to the heroes and what is happening is very easy to understand. Black people here are really good people with a great sense of rhythm and voice. Fat people, despite the huge amount of excess weight, are able to dance and move no worse than the rest and even better and do not sweat at all. And all the other whites with normal build are completely racists, liars and generally unworthy people with whom you need to disdain to communicate, only give them an excuse to humiliate someone of color, and if you do not give them, they will find him and stop at nothing. Well, if a person is a believer, then he is completely hopeless moron and does not understand anything in life, and if this is your mother, then do not hesitate to call her an idiot. The creators of the film claim that this is not a show, but the future. No thanks, I don't want that kind of future.
In general, we have just a terrible musical, which is not clear what. On the one hand, he is a comedy with a couple of good jokes and Travolta, who played the role of a fat mom, and on the other hand, a purely propaganda machine, from which this very propaganda climbs, from where it is possible and from where it is impossible. We are told almost every minute that racism is bad and that we are all equal. Not even half of the film passes as all this begins to throw up, and then everything only grows. These ideas are certainly not bad, but you do not need to talk about them all the time throughout the picture and make white finished racists and bastards, and black white and fluffy from this only ridiculous, and the film itself turned out to be complete nonsense. Or maybe the creators of this just decided to troll us? If so, they succeeded, and if all this is serious, it turned out disgusting and inept. It would be better to work on songs and dances.
P.S. Why didn't they say anything about gays and homophobia, there would be a complete set.
Very cute and bright movie! A new story of Cinderella, the continuation of the Briolin, the story of finding yourself and your place... there is all this.
Quinn Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer (what a woman!), Christopher Walken with his original plastic (I love it when he dances), and, of course, John Travolta. Blue-eyed long-legged handsome from “Grease” plays the mother of the main character, complexed full laundry.
And he plays so famously, so natural that I forgot at some points that he is a man, especially when my mother is prettier to go to the store with my dad.
James Marsden - and one of the favorite actors plays a brilliant host of a very popular TV show with dances, whose actress dreams of becoming the main character - a cute fat girl-schoolgirl Tracy. It is small and incomplete, but so cheerful, energetic and open!
In the movie, I want to dance in front of the screen! I liked the line of black and white dancers, and it's great when art removes prejudice.
I love musicals madly, although before this genre of cinema I constantly ignored, probably because I did not understand anything about it, and I was still small to see and appreciate the true beauty of the combination of dance, plot and music. With age, tastes change, I have already learned this from my own experience, but now I try not to miss a new musical. As a rule, new products are always full of stars and high expectations. What I have already seen, I really liked, and somehow unexpectedly, I came across a musical I have not seen in 2007 directed by Adam Schenkman, called Hairspray. I think that many will agree with me that new films, no matter what genre, inspire more desire to see than old paintings, I certainly love different movies, no matter what year, country, but still I am more willing to approach new products. "Hairspray" - a musical with a very good rating, reviews of critics and viewers, a lot of nominations, a couple of awards, and the participation of famous actors, among them John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Zac Efron, in general, a complete set of everything that makes you watch the movie without postponing it tomorrow.
With dances and songs here everything is fine, but not how, Adam Shankman still worked on the musical, but the actors performing here the main and secondary roles were so nasty that calmly without disgust and nerves this movie I could not watch. The main character of the film is fat Tracy Turnblad, which was performed by aspiring actress Nikki Blonsky, she was so disgusted that when I saw her in the next scene, I wanted to puke. For this role, Nikki received some recognition and nomination for best role. Personally, I saw something completely different, namely a fat, ugly girl, in which cellulite and burst out. She was so disgusting to me that I hated her for life. Her stupid smile, idiotic, hysterical laughter and general body shape made her a real victim of McDonald’s. The second thing that really pissed off was John Travolta and his stupid role as the mother of this fat monster. The character of John, Edna Turnblad is also fat, loves to dance and also looks very stupid and stupid.
I don’t understand how John Travolta accepted the role of such a character, in makeup and in the costume of a fat aunt, he looked like a retired transvestite. The only thing that can be praised here is Michelle Pfeiffer, of course, that she was not as incendiary and graceful as Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge or as Catherine Zeta-Jones in the musical Chicago, but somehow I liked it. I won’t say anything good about Zach Efron either, the worst role he’s ever played in his young career. In general, the film is a complete ugliness, ranging from the main character to the same main character who shakes her fat ass on the streets of the glorious town of Baltimore. I can’t quench my hatred of the main character, I can’t even remember a movie where I hated the actress in the lead role so much. I don’t want to talk much about the plot, since it turned out to be along and across banal nonsense, like there is a dreamy, fat girl who sleeps and sees her dancing on television, everyone loves her, everyone wants to be like her, but then what happened, I think you will guess without me. This is the worst musical I've ever seen.
While storming the internet in search of a good musical, I came across 'Hairspray'. As someone who watched the original, I reluctantly turned on the remake to kill time. At first, the film didn't catch anything. Singing and dancing fat girl with her stupid girlfriend fanatic on a popular dance show. But with each new shot, the film attracted my attention more and more, and then I was covered! I started dancing, singing old songs from musicals. I want to note that compared to the dry original, 'Hairspray' 2007 is a fountain of life, from which energy and inspiration splash. Indeed, this film can inspire many who have put an end to their career as a dancer or actress because of their full weight, who do not believe that they will meet their love and do not believe in the purity of our world (as I do). Also in this film, I like the accurate description and conveyance of the vintage 60s spirit. Hidden advertising and hatred of black people! Great! By the way, thank you very much for the fact that in the Russian dub they did not translate the songs, as they did in 'Class Musical', not allowing us to listen to the true voices of the characters.
Tracy Turnbland (Nicky Blonsky) is a girl from a poor family who constantly hovers in the clouds, dreaming of fame. She's a great singer, and she thinks she's a dancer. Let's face it, at some points it was sickening to look at. When she tried to repeat the pa with the same grace as other people with a more suitable physique, she does not succeed.
Link Larkin (Zac Efron) - the first handsome school star, a TV show star and just a charming guy who dreams of fame no less than Tracy. Zach is a genius actor. His filmography is diverse: from silly Disney musicals to serious dramas.
Penny Pingleton (Amanda Bynes) is a sweet, innocent schoolgirl growing up in a peasant family with Puritan views. Amanda Bynes struck me the most in this musical. First of all, my play. And secondly, a voice! She has a beautiful voice that I would listen to and listen to.
Edna Turnbland (John Travolta) is Tracy's mother, a lady of curvy forms and just a cool aunt. John Travolta as a woman is something.
Amber and Velma Von Tusle (Brittany Slow and Michelle Pfeiffer) are a mother and daughter dreaming of fame and willing to do anything to achieve it.
Roots Collins (James Marsden) is a TV presenter of the show of the same name, a prankster and a merry man, ready to make progress in world cinema. The actor is awesome. Played 5 points. I love when there is improvisation in terms of emotions, thereby creating the character.
Seavid (Elijah Kelly) is a simple black guy for whom dance and music are everything in life.
So the plot - 8
Today, on the advice of a friend, I watched the musical “Hairspray”. The impressions were not what I expected. After all, on the one hand, the story is simple as three rubles.
An ordinary girl who has a talent for singing and dancing dreams of getting into a famous talk show. Everything goes according to plan, it is taken, after which some problems begin, but despite this, everything as always ends with the same: happy end.
There are a lot of stories like this.
But on the other hand, how this story is presented!
First of all, it's not the same story. It's a musical, a comedy, and a melodrama. On the one hand, it seems that everything is very mixed, strange and not clear, but such a “mix” combination looks interesting and winning, which, by the way, is rare.
Second, the lead actress. We see a cheerful, cheerful, talented and plump girl. Her weight gives a certain zest, I think. After all, usually in such films, the main roles are played by skinny, dull ladies like Amber. It's boring. Nikki Blonsky is perfect for the role of Tacey. She has a special respect for that.
Thirdly, perhaps the most important thing. The whole film is accompanied by incendiary dances, cheerful music, which, well, can not but please. I danced on the chair myself: D
Even ordinary situations can be shown as dance. It's unusual, it's cool! The music is definitely uplifting. Everything is done at the highest level.
Of course, there were minor flaws in the film like ridiculous situations with the police or poor-quality performance of some actors, but the main highlight of the film so compensates that you simply do not notice them or they seem funny to you.
In general, the conclusion is this: the film is not bad, incendiary, with a light atmosphere and an unusual presentation.
I think it's worth seeing every girl. It perfectly shows that no matter what appearance you wear, your main talent and be positive. Tracey was mildly "complete," but that didn't stop her from succeeding. Very motivating.
In 2007, almost every magazine wrote about this film, especially John Travolta. But I watched it relatively recently. I really liked the movie!
Plot
I will not describe the content in detail, suffice it to say that the main idea is very popular in modern cinema - what a person can achieve with abilities and desire, being unlike others.
The '60s of the 20th century. Tracy Turnblad is a sweet, smiling but pretty plump girl who dances very well and wants to be a star. She sees no problem with this, and when faced with incomprehension and ridicule, she does not despair and keeps going. Tracy has friends, fans, but then she unwittingly gets involved in the fight for the equality of African Americans.
Actors
Nikki Blonsky is the main character of Tracy. Oh, charming! Her cosmos, her hair, her smile. She dances well and sings well. Bravo!
John Travolta by Edna Turnblad. What has not been written about this role? But to watch a rather brutal actor play a lady of Balzac age... That was a lot of fun! Especially as he expresses surprise and delight. Well, it's just wonderfully played!
The film also starred Michelle Pfeiffer - in the role of the harmful hostess of the dance show Velma, Brittany Snow - her no less harmful daughter Amber. Amanda Bynes is the best friend of Tracy Penny, who fully shares her interests, despite the prohibitions of her puritan mother. James Marsden - well, damn good as the host of the dance show Corney Collins! Queen Latifah - a very bright and memorable role of co-host Collins Motorhouse Mabell. Latifa is a great comedy actress! Zac Efron is a dancer of the show and a singer, he sings very well! Elijah Kelly is a great dancer, also helping Tracy.
The cast is great!
Music and costumes
The action takes place in the 2nd half of the 20th century - so you need to correspond to the era! Makeup artists and costumers coped with all 100 - bright costumes, flying skirts, hairstyles, lacquer superstrong fixation ... And the music is exactly what it was then – fast, bright, dance! During the final song, I want to dance!
It was a great musical! When you are in a bad mood, watch the hair polish! It will definitely give you a boost for the whole day!

What distinguishes this musical, this film from many others is not the full main character, but time. Sixties. Real ones. With its own special rhythm, its music, dances, views on life.
This time "freedom" in the American sense of the word flies into the small town of Baltimore and we can see the changes that will take place in just a few days.
The central theme is a dance show on television, with its own rather banal selection criteria, which do not fit either national or any other minorities.
The plot revolves around the “unconventional” main character Tracy – in addition to extra pounds, she has ambition, talent and faith in a better future.
I’m attracted to this musical mainly by music and dancing – I’ve been doing it myself and I love it very much, so look, if it’s “your” – if it’s not, it’s better not to try, you won’t get any pleasure anyway.
